2 CHAMPIONSHIPS Swimming This year s event was hotly contested particularly between St Leonard s and Westbourne with only 70 points separating them in the final aggregate scores. Whilst these two schools were outstanding, the competition was strong with great results from St Michael s and Overnewton. Loyola, Beaconhills and Thomas Carr were excellent competitors and will look to 2016 to grow their depth and consistency. 3 CHAMPIONSHIPS Athletics The competition continues to strengthen year by year. Schools are developing and preparing their athletes well and this is showing in the competiveness of events. This was evident in the senior boys 1500m event when the first four runners across the line all broke the ACS record. It is also apparent when so few points separates the top three to four or five schools. As with the swimming; Westbourne and St Leonard s were vying for top spot with Westbourne turning the tables and securing all the major cups. St Michael s had an outstanding carnival only 17 points behind Westbourne for the Boys Aggregate Cup. Overnewton continue to go from strength to strength in their development as the secured third place in both the Boys and Girls Aggregate Cups. 4 CHAMPIONSHIPS Cross Country This year s ACS Cross Country was another successful event. Like athletics it also runs well. The Loyola coordinators arrive early to set up the course and layout the finish line area. St Leonard s, Westbourne and St Michael s were the stand out teams this year with Overnewton and Beaconhills jockeying for fourth place with Loyola and Thomas Carr looking for a little more depth next year. The Heads of Sport have agreed to use the displacer scoring system in This means if a team has in excess the number of scoring runners in a year level then the non-scoring finishers can still displace the runners that follow effectively adding points to the teams that follow. Therefore the majority of runners can have an influence on the scores. The Heads of Sport have discussed and agreed to a preference to condense the schedule in 2016 to reduce the time of the Championships from 5 hours to around 3 hours. To do this we would need to change the schedule to a staggered start allowing 5 minutes between boys and girls events and employ electronic timing as the current method of manually scanning bar codes from race bibs is time intensive and couldn t be completed in 3 hours. Quotes for electronic timing have been requested with the details to be presented at the final Principals meeting. Electronic timing is using chips on the back of race bibs to collect times as runners pass over timing mats at the finish line. This allows the collection of times and collation of results to be fully automated unlike the manual entry of times and manual collation of results we currently employ. The proposed change to the event schedule below has the boys running first so that when the girls race begins five minutes later, the boys will not run over the top of the girls. 4

6 EVENTS Chess This year s ACS Chess event was hosted by Loyola College and was a great success. Held in the College library with wonderful hospitality the players had a really great space to compete in. The Arbiter from Chess Kids was superb and ensured a much improved event from The clickety-clack of the timing clocks throughout the afternoon is a sign of the quiet enthusiasm for this event and whole-hearted way the students approach the competition. We would still like to see more females participating in the competition; this remains a work in progress. Westbourne continued their unbeaten winning streak for the fifth year. Beaconhills slipped past St Leonard s to take second place in only their second year in the competition. Final Scores Place School Score 1 Westbourne Beaconhills St Leonard s St Michael s Overnewton 13 6 Loyola 11 7 Thomas Carr 8.5 Next year s ACS Chess will be held on Monday 30 May and will be hosted by St Leonard s College. It will link in with the Principals Meeting in Term 2. Public Speaking We have been fortunate to have ACS events hosted in wonderful environments that have brought out the best in the students participating and this was the case with Public Speaking which was hosted by St Michael s. A wonderful event with terrific speeches that covered many topics with humour, drama and were thought provoking. 7 EVENTS ACS All Stars Presentations St Leonard s kindly hosted the All Stars Presentations once again and we had an excellent speaker in Peta Searle. Female football is hugely popular and one of the fastest growing sports in the country. Peta is certainly a superb role model not just for girls as her story of persistence and hard work to achieve her goals is inspiring to all All Stars Presentations event will be held on Wednesday 7 September to be hosted by Loyola College. 7

8 EVENTS Girl s Football What an absolutely fantastic event this year s Girl s Football was. Hosted by Westbourne using their two main ovals, all six schools entered a team and we will need to source a venue with three ovals in 2016 to allow for Beaconhills to join in. The afternoon began in the Andrew Park Pavilion with a really lovely introduction from Daisy Pearce, Australia s greatest and most awarded female footballer. The students were clearly captivated with Daisy s story and messages and were ready for action and they didn t disappoint. With the teams split into two pools of three, the matches were played with excellent skills and really inspiring spirit and sportspersonship. Loyola and Thomas Carr finished on top of the table in their pools and played off in the Grand Final in what was a highly skilled match. Thomas Carr were too strong and took out the Premiership. St Michael s and Westbourne played off in the consolation match where St Michael s took the honours in a solid match. The feedback from the girls was excellent. They clearly loved the day and can t wait for next year. Even the St Leonard s girls, who were unable to win a game, came off with smiles on their faces and said they loved it. These are the simple outcomes we strive for; the students to have fun, be active with their friends and want more. The students have requested that we lengthen the match times for next year so they can play for longer so we will try to find a facility with three grounds to accommodate this. 9 WEEKLY SPORTS 9

10 Weekly Sports This year s weekly summer and winter sports program went well. Futsal is now well and truly entrenched as a sport and is likely to stay in the program given its popularity. We must mention the excellent improvement in the quality of volleyball competitions in recent years. It seems the quality of coaching across all year levels is very strong and this clearly flows into the development of the players. The tables below are purely a measurement of percentages of premierships won in each season. They don t reflect how close several competitions were and improvements teams made from one year to the next. They are presented for general information.
