The Italian men s teams of Andrea Ghiurghi/Dio Lequaglie and Giovanni Errichiello/Dio Lequaglie lost SWATCH FIVB World Tour gold medal matches to teams from the United States in 1989 (Jesi, Italy) and 1991 (Cap d Agde, France), respectively. Kerri Walsh will by seeking her 39th SWATCH FIVB World Tour gold medal. Walsh and Misty May-Treanor currently hold the women s record with 38 FIVB gold medals, including 35 together. Walsh s husband (Casey Jennings) won his first SWATCH FIVB World Tour gold medal this season as he teamed with Kevin Wong to capture the men s 2010 season finale in The Netherlands when the American pair upset Benjamin Insfran and Bruno Oscar Schmidt of Brazil 21-18, and in the 60-minutes August 29 title in The Hague. Both the teams of Branagh/Walsh and Menegatti/Rosso had to win elimination matches to reach Sunday s Phuket Thailand Open powered by PTT gold medal finale, including three victories each on Friday and two wins each on Saturday. Menegatti and Rosso will be attempting to become the first-ever women s team to win SWATCH FIVB World Tour gold medals by winning six elimination matches to reach the semi-finals after dropping their opening match in a 32-team, double-elimination tournament. The feat has happen five times on the men s SWATCH FIVB World Tour. Branagh and Walsh will be seeking to become the fourth women s team to win SWATCH FIVB World Tour gold medals by winning five elimination matches to reach the semi-finals after dropping second in a 32-team, double-elimination tournament. Shelda Bede and Adriana Behar were the first to accomplish the feat at the 1999 SWATCH FIVB World Championships in Marseille, France. In 2008, Branagh and Elaine Youngs won the Barcelona gold medal after losing in the second round of the winner s bracket. Stephanie Pohl and Okka Rau of Germany matched the accomplishment the same year in the final Beijing 2008 Olympic qualifying event at Marseille. Branagh and Walsh placed fifth last week at Sanya Open in China. Branagh and Elaine Youngs placed fifth at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Branagh and Youngs won a SWATCH FIVB World Tour gold medal at the 2008 Barcelona stop. Branagh ranks 34th in FIVB all-time earnings with US$279,925. Walsh is a two-time Olympic champion with Misty May-Treanor. Walsh was named the most outstanding player at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. Walsh appeared in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games as a member of the USA Volleyball team. Walsh and May-Treanor are a three-time SWATCH-FIVB World champions with gold medals at the 2003 Rio de Janeiro, 2005 Berlin and 2007 Gstaad (Switzerland) events. Menegatti and Rosso are only the second Italian women s team since 2001 to advance to a SWATCH FIVB World Tour final four. Menegatti and Greta Cicolari placed fourth last October at the Chinese stop in Sanya to become the first Italian women s team to reach a SWATCH FIVB World Tour final four since Daniela Gattelli and Lucilla Perrotta, who captured the bronze medal at an August 2001 event in Hong Kong. It was Gattelli and Perrotta s only semi-final appearance in 103 events as the Hong Kong third was Italy s only women s medal in the past 201 SWATCH stops since Laura Bruschini and Annamaria Solazzi reached a SWATCH final four three times in 1998 to become the first Italian women s team to reach the semi-finals. While Menegatti is playing in her 14th SWATCH FIVB World Tour with her second different partner, Rosso is playing in her 17th SWATCH FIVB World Tour with her sixth different partner. Menegatti ranks 178th in FIVB earnings (US$50,723) and Rosso x245thxth ($23,790). Menegatti competed in eight FIVB junior (under 21) and youth (under 19) world championships. Menegatti and Gilda Lombardi placed second at the 2007 SWATCH FIVB Youth World Championships for players under the age of 19 in Myslowice, Poland. Menegatti and Viktoria Orsi Toth placed second in the 2010 SWATCH FIVB Junior World Championships for players under the age of 21 in Alanya, Turkey, this past September. Prior to this week s final four appearance, Rosso s best SWATCH FIVB World Tour placement was a seventh last week with Menegatti in Sanya. Prior to the seventh, Rosso s best SWATCH stop was a 17th earlier this season with Elisa Cella at the Polish Grand Slam in Stare Jablonki.
