1 Congrats to the June 4 th USA JBT bid winners. Hello Beach Volleyballers, It is mid April and yesterday it did snow.however summer really is just right around the corner. Soon the sun will be out on a daily basis and everyone will slowly build up their tan, their sand legs and their summer beach tournament wins. If you haven t started to think about which events you have open to play I think now is a great time to begin. You ll find a list of sand tournaments sponsored and sanctioned by our region in this newsletter. More events will be steadily added as the summer progresses. As you plan please take note of all the different sponsoring organizations, their national championship dates and sites as many have restructured. There is an ever-growing opportunity to play. Remember any sand tournament provides great volleyball, friends, sand and sun.so just have fun!! This newsletter will be updated and continue once a month through the summer. 5 Chicago Sand Volleyball Beach National Qualifier: June 9, 2018 Montrose Beach, Chicago Boys & Girls 12/14/16/18's Sign up and more information: The nation s best youth beach volleyball players will compete for coveted spots into the inaugural USA National Beach Tour Championships through 16 Beach National Qualifiers (BNQs) being held coast-to-coast showcasing the fastest growing sport under the sun. The USA National Beach Tour serves as The officially sanctioned beach tour of USA Volleyball." Related: USA National Beach Tour Launched USA National Beach Tour Championships Heads to Siesta Key, Florida The BNQs, held in 16 different regions of USAV, run from March 3 to July 15. Each BNQ will award National Open Division bids to nationals in four age groups (12U, 14U, 16U and 18U) in both genders. The top four pairs in each division will earn a spot into the championship. Players can compete in multiple qualifiers to increase their chances of earning a coveted bid. The USA National Beach Tour Championships hits the sands of Siesta Key, Florida, from July In addition, USA Volleyball will be conducting seven Beach High Performance Selection Camps across the United States from early March to early May, followed by a Beach HP A2 Camp June 7-8 in Lisle, Illinois. These events will be held in conjunction with the Beach National Qualifier schedule. 5

6 Questions and Answers Q: What is the Beach National Qulifier (BNQ)? A: For returners to the beach this is the new version of the USA Junior Beach Tour. They have restricted. For beach newcomers this is the beach equivalent to the USAV Junior Nationals. The USA BNQ host 12 qualifying events all summer across the nation. If you finish in the top 3 of a Bid event you will qualify for a bid into the national tournament. Trickle down bids are also awarded. This year s national event is held July in Siesta Keys, FL. Q: Do I need to be an USAV or AAU member? A: Yes for the most part. Most all junior beach tournaments are affiliated with either USAV or AAU. To play in their events you will need a membership. If you don t have one both offer summertime membership at a reduced rate. If you were a member for indoor you do not need to register again. Q: Is beach volleyball a different sport from indoor volleyball. A: Yes, at all levels - collegiately, internationally (Olympics) and professionally beach volleyball is a different sport from court volleyball. The sport is played by two players in sand using different rules, unique skills and strategies, and specialized equipment. There are separate scholarships in NCAA programs, six in DI and five in DII. As with other new sports, many students on the first teams will be cross-over players from other sports, and we anticipate that many beach players will come from the indoor ranks in the early years. Q: What are the health benefits of playing beach volleyball? A: Any activity that gets you moving, particularly if it's fun, can make a huge difference in your health and fitness, mental outlook, and overall quality of life. Add to that lots of sunshine and fresh air, what's not to like about beach volleyball? Other than a possible overexposure to sun and heat, beach volleyball could quite possibly be the perfect warm-weather pastime. And since beach volleyball is played on sand, it's much gentler on the body than other hard-surface sports. What are the Coaching Rules? Coaches must be certified USAV members. Coaches may participate in warm up drill only prior to eh official 10 min warm up. During play coaches may observe from the player area Instruction may only take place during timeouts, between sets and (nondisruptively) during side changes Coaches may suggest a time out to their team captain. Coaches may not influence or question the officials judgment at any time No more than 2 coaches allowed per team. Q: What s the best sun protection? A: Your best defense against the UV rays is a good sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or more, and protective sports sunglasses. You may also consider wearing a sports cap or visor, and protective clothing if necessary. 6

7 Questions and Answers Q: What is Collegiate Beach Volleyball A: The NCAA took on the new sport after the AVCA nurtured it from infancy. Many schools have programs with developing budgets and have very limited scholarship opportunities, but some schools are pulling away from the competition by getting top recruits who have been able to specialize in beach volleyball. The AVCA ranks the top 10 schools during the Spring season. Schools have limited practice during the Fall, and have full schedules in March and May, with duals, tournaments, and perhaps Conference Championships and National Championships in early May. Q: How Do I play beach volleyball in college? A: There are athletics scholarships being awarded to athletes at schools across the country, and most of those players on scholarship took the initiative and contacted the coach of that school, usually with video footage to get their attention. Many athletes played beach volleyball through USAV and it's prestigious High Performance (HP) program. It is becoming more common for athletes on scholarship to specialize in beach volleyball at some point in high school, rather than playing both indoor and beach (however, a large amount play both). The majority of collegiate beach volleyball athletes are not on scholarship, and it is important to be realistic when pursuing your dreams Q: Can an athlete play both indoor and beach in the same year for a college? A: Yes, but scholarships are tricky in this situation. At present, players on an indoor scholarship can play indoor and beach volleyball at the same time, but players that receive beach scholarships CANNOT play on the indoor team due to. Many schools are using their indoor squads to fill out their emerging beach teams, so players are transferring their indoor experience to the beach game. If you want to play both, you need an indoor scholarship. (If there is no scholarship involved, players can play on both teams without conflict). Q: What is the format for team play? A: The interscholastic/intercollegiate version of beach volleyball is similar to team tennis with each school fielding a number of doubles team stacked by ability. Collegiately each school fields five teams of two. The winning school is the one that captures three of the five matches. Q: What is the uniform? A: The standard uniform looks very similar to track uniforms, a set of shorts/briefs and a singlet or tights and long sleeves for cooler weather competitions.
