Midway through the Big 12 season, Texas Tech currently sits in a three-way tie for sixth place with Kansas State and Oklahoma, both of whom will travel to Lubbock during the second half of league play. The clip ranks third in the Big 12 and is on pace to challenege Lauren Douglass s single-season school record hitting percentage of.377 set in After a strong non-conference slate, Keenan has kept it going into Big 12 play and ranks fifth in the league in hititng at ,000 MILESTONE FOR KLEPETKA Senior Kate Klepetka, who transfered to Tech from Texas A&M - Corpus Christi where she set the school s career record for digs (1.773) reached another career milestone at Kansas State. The 2016 AVCA All-Region performer compiled a match-high 26 digs, which pushed her over the 2,000 career digs milestone. Filling in over the last seven games as libero during Akiu s injury, Klepetka has been solid and is now one of just three active NCAA Division I players with 2,000 or more career digs. NON-CONFERENCE RECAP Tech posted an 11-2 mark in its non-conference schedule, its best win percentage since The Red Raiders traveled to the Gulf of Mexico, the West Coast and the East Coast in 2017, journeying 6,491 miles during nonconference play, more mileage than Lubbock to Tokyo, Japan (6,230 miles). Tech achieved several milestones on its journey. It s win at Clemson was its first non-conference win over a Power-Five school since The win over the Tigers was followed by a victory over South Carolina, which marked the first time Tech has won multiple non-conference matches over current Power-Five foes since SLAMMING SOPHOMORES Sophomore outside hitters Emily Hill and Chandler Atwood lead the team in kills with 250 and 224, respectively. Atwood has taken major strides in her second season with the program, increasing her kills per set from 2.13 in 2016 to 2.95 this season. Hill, meanwhile, has made an immediate impact following her transfer from Mississippi State, where she was one of the top freshmen in the SEC in Her kills per set, digs per set and blocks per set are all up from last season. FRESHMAN IN THE MIDDLE While junior middle blocker Katy Keenan has been a mainstay for Tech with 65 career starts, freshman middle Allison White has been one of the most pleasant surprises of The Argyle, Texas, native has started every match in 2017 and leads the team in blocks (0.96 per set), including a mark of 1.00 blocks per set during Big 12 play. She s also hitting.295 on the year, which ranks third among Big 12 freshmen. White has put together nine matches in which she has connected on seven kills or more while hitting.300 or better. NOT YOUR AVERAGE SETTER Texas Tech ranks fourth in the Big 12 in kills, and a big key to that is setter Missy Owens. While the junior is not only averaging assists per set, which ranks second in the Big 12, she has also recorded 92 kills on the year at a.359 clip, which is second on the team. She has recorded six kills or more eight times, including a career-high 13 ( ) in a five-set win at UTEP. She went on a run on the east coast where she hit.353,.375,.400 and.400. Additionally, season-high clips of.857,.750 and.700 make her attack something defenses have to respect, opening up lanes for the team s pinhitters. ROSTER REBUILD Head Coach Tony Graystone knew he would inherit a young squad when he took the job in Only two upperclassmen contributed in 2016 as Graystone trotted out lineups that consisted mostly of underclassmen. This year, however, Tech will have the benefit of a more experienced roster consisting of eight upperclassmen, five of which will be counted upon to start or play major roles. Furthermore, with only one senior on the roster in 2017, Tech should boast one of the nation s most experienced rosters in REUNITED Graduate transfer Kate Klepetka transferred from Texas A&M - Corpus Christi this summer to link up with her former coach on the Island, Tony Graystone, for her final season. Graystone coached Klepetka at TAMUCC in 2014 and 2015, when the Islanders went a combined Under Graystone, Klepetka was named the 2015 Southland Conference Libero of the Year and an AVCA All-Region First Team performer. She joins the Red Raiders as one of the most decorated players in TAMUCC history, owning the school s single-season record for digs (709) and the career mark (1,773). Key among those are transfers Missy Owens from Long Beach State, Emily Hill from Mississippi State and Kate Klepetka from TAMUCC. All three players could start from day one, with Owens filling the void at setter left by the graduation of Marguerite Grubb, HIll stepping up on the outside where she was one of the SEC s most exciting freshmen in 2016, and Klepetka providing experience on the back row to supplement the defense of libero Tita Akiu. FRESHMEN FIVE Five freshmen are set to enter the fold in 2017 led by Amarillo, Texas, defensive specialist Emerson Solano and Argyle, Texas, middle blocker Allison White. Other freshmen include Dallas, Texas, outside hitter Haley Harman, Magnolia, Texas, defensive specialist Emily Shaw and Austin, Texas, right side Andrea Janss. Tech s 2017 recruiting class gained recognition in PrepVolleyball.com s High Honorable Mention category. STEPPING UP With so many exciting new faces, the leadership of the team remains in a core of juniors who are now entering their third year in Lubbock. Libero Tita Akiu, middle blocker Katy Keenan and outside/right side Sarah Redding believe they have what it takes to remake the mentality of the locker room and mold it to the competitive style of their second-year head coach, Tony Graystone. Akiu was second in the Big 12 in digs per set last season, while Keenan (.231 ATK%) and Redding (2.38 K/Set) are the team s top returning attackers. AVCA RANKINGS (10/23) Rk. School Pts. PRESEASON HONORS Junior libero Reyn (Tita) Akiu was the lone libero named to the 2017 Preseason All-Big 12 Team. Akiu makes it three straight years Tech has been represented on the preseason squad after Lauren Douglass earned nods in 2015 and Akiu looks to improve upon a stellar 2016 campaign in which she earned All-Big 12 Second Team honors after recording the second-highest single-season dig total in program history with 547 and finished second in the conference with 4.97 digs per set, a number that leads all Big 12 returnees. RECORD BOOK TRACKER Junior Tita Akiu is on her way to becoming one of the most prolific defenders in program history. In 2016, Akiu posted the school s second-highest single-season dig total with 547, putting her at 713 digs for her career with a 3.55 per set average. She has 246 digs on the year and is just 172 digs away from a tie for tenth on the school s career digs list (1,131). Akiu s career dig totals are currently on pace to climb into the top four in school history REWIND After dropping its first two matches of the season, Tech rattled off 10 straight wins to elevate its record to The Red Raiders caught some tough breaks as they approached Big 12 play, winning only one set in its first seven league matches. However, the team turned a corner midway through the conference slate, taking No. 2 Texas to five sets along with matches at West Virginia and at home against Iowa State and TCU. While the improvement within the team was obvious, the Red Raiders look to break through in 2017 with a renewed competitive attitude. CONFERENCE LEADERS FROM 2016 Among those returning in 2017, junior Tita Akiu and sophomore Emily Hill were two of the best at their position in their respective conferences last year. Akiu is the top returning defender in terms of digs from last season, averaging 5.04 digs per set in Big 12 play. Meanwhile, Hill was one of the top freshman attackers in the SEC last year, finishing second among all SEC freshmen with 382 kills while averaging 3.03 kills per set. She also ranked in the top 10 among all players in kills per set during SEC play. SOPHOMORE SPUNK Outside hitter Chandler Atwood was one of the team s top attackers in 2016 as she finished fourth on the team in kills with 168. She has the leaping ability and arm to become even more of a weapon in Among the team s returnees, she was second in kills and blocks last season and only got better as the year went on. During Big 12 play, she posted three 12-kill matches, which was her career best. Furthermore, she hit at a career best.700 clip (7-0-10) in a match at Iowa State and went for 7.0 total blocks at West Virginia. SET UP ARTIST Filling the shoes of graduating senior Marguerite Grubb is no small task. Grubb put up back-to-back 1,000 assist seasons and wrapped up her career eighth on the school s all-times assists list. If anyone is up to the task, however, it s junior Missy Owens. Owens transferred from Long Beach State, where she ranked second in the Big West Conference with assists per set, prior to the spring and immediately began building a repoire with her teammates during the offseason. Her play propelled LBSU to a record and 13-3 conference mark thanks to her team s.256 hitting percentage, which was second in the league. In addition to her setting skills, she added 99 kills last season with a.283 attack percentage and was second on the team with 260 digs. CONTINUING THE TREND With Tita Akiu ranking fourth on the school s single-season digs list in 2016, a Red Raiders has cracked the top 10 in single-season digs at Texas Tech in each of the last seven years. In 2010, Tori Vaughn put up 409 digs, but was knocked out by Eric Ruegg in 2011 with 419 digs. The next three years were dominated by Rachel Brummitt, who set the school record in 2012 (510) and 2013 (604), then posted 510 digs in her 2014 senior season. Those three years also catapulted her to the Texas Tech career digs record with 1,624. Last year, Carlie Foust notched 491 digs, which ranked fourth on the list. 4 TEXASTECH.COM

LAWRENCE, Kansas A shorthanded Texas Tech volleyball team fell in straight sets to No. 11 Kansas Saturday at Horejsi Family Athletics Center in Lawrence, Kansas. The Red Raiders (13-8, 2-6) entered the contest without junior setter Missy Owens, who did not travel due to a concussion. Junior Kyndal Cowan stepped into the starting role and led a valiant Texas Tech effort that fell short, 25-22, 25-18, The girls fought hard and gave a great effort, head coach Tony Graystone said. I thought Kyndal did a good job. Kansas is a top-10 team, and they looked like it today. No disappointment on our end. I thought Sarah (Redding) and Katy (Keenan) did really well. Their play got better as the match went on. It was good to see us fight like that. Cowan finished with a career high in assists with 25 and digs with eight. Sarah Redding led the way offensively with 10 kills at a.304 clip. It marked her fifth double-digit kill performance of the season, while sophomore Emily Hill chipped in seven kills and 13 digs and junior Katy Keenan added five kills at a.364 clip. Kansas s Madison Rigdon led the Jayhawks with 14 kills on.407 hitting and eight digs. Setter Ainise Havili recorded a double-double with 34 assists and 11 digs. They Jayhawks (18-3, 7-1), whose only Big 12 setback was to No. 3 Texas, hit.299 as a unit. Tech got off to a strong start in the first, including an early 4-0 run that helped Tech gain an advantage through much of the frame. With the match tied at 18-18, Kansas closed the set with six kills in their final seven points, capped off with a pair from middle blocker Mmachi Nwoke to win the set. The Red Raiders kept up the fight in the second set. Trailing, 18-10, Tech went on a 6-0 run featuring an ace by Hill and kills from Redding and White. The Red Raiders closed the run with a block from Atwood and White on the left side that forced a Kansas timeout. The Jayhawks would recoup to win the set Kansas took control of the third early on, but Tech put together a 4-0 run midway through the frame, including an ace from freshman Emerson Solano. The Jayhawks closed out the match, hitting.389 for the final frame. UP NEXT The Red Raiders will face another ranked opponent next Wednesday in Texas Tech s annual Dig Pink match against No. 24 Baylor. NOTABLES Texas Tech took part in Kansas Volleyball s pediatric cancer awareness day by wearing gold shoe laces Saturday. The Red Raiders match against the Jayhawks was their second in a stretch of three straight matches against ranked opponents. Saturday s match marked the midway point in the Big 12 season for the Red Raiders. Tech has already won more sets in 2017 than in either of the previous two seasons. The Red Raiders (11-3, 0-1) entered the match without Preseason All-Big 12 libero Reyn Akiu, who didn t travel due to a knee injury. After Tech battled the Bears to a 1-1 draw through two sets, the Red Raiders were unable to keep up in the final two stanzas as Baylor (11-3, 1-0) claimed a 25-20, 23-25, 25-20, decision. I thought we played pretty well, head coach Tony Graystone said. Our block was good, we fought hard for points and I thought we played good volleyball. We just didn t do enough to slow Baylor down. The Red Raider block matched Baylor s as both sides finished with 10 on the night. Reigning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week Katie Staiger and the Bears eventually found holes on the back row as Staiger earned 20 kills on.415 hitting and the Bears outhit the Red Raiders.353 to.250. We missed Tita (Akiu) for sure, said Graystone. Our serve receive wasn t what we needed it to be. I thought the offense was good. When we were in system, we were scoring. It was just that first touch. We weren t consistent enough with it to do what we needed to do. The sophomore tandem of Chandler Atwood and Emily Hill led the Tech attack, both finishing with 12 on the night. Atwood hit.308 and added a career-high four blocks, while Hill added three blocks and five digs. Baylor maintained a slight distance from the Red Raiders in the first frame as they hit.343 for the set. It was a different story in the second set as Tech limited Baylor to just 12 kills and forced eight Bear errors. Tech held a lead and seemed to be in control before the Bears rallied to pull ahead Following a timeout, Tech came storming back and a kill by junior Sarah Redding polished off a 5-0 run that would give Tech the set and even the match at 1-1. 17 MATCH 22 - #24 BAYLOR 2017 TEXAS TECH VOLLEYBALL HEAD TONY GRAYSTONE 19th Season Overall 2nd Season at Texas Tech University of Louisville 96 Entering his second season at Tech, Tony Graystone feels they are starting further ahead in year two. Tony Graystone enters his second season as the head coach of Texas Tech volleyball in 2017 after being hired on Jan. 21, Graystone arrived at Texas Tech after serving seven seasons as the head volleyball coach at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. During his first season in Lubbock, Graystone guided the Red Raiders to improvement in several statistical categories from the season prior, including kills, assists, service aces, digs, solo blocks and total blocks. In seven seasons at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Graystone turned the Islanders into one of the premier volleyball programs in the Southland Conference. The Islanders put together their best season in program history in 2015, finishing 31-5 overall, with a spotless 16-0 conference mark. It was also the first NCAA Tournament berth for the Islanders, who faced Texas A&M in first round play. Their win total was the best in school history and was one win short of the winningest season by any Southland program. Graystone s TAMUCC squads recorded 20 or more wins in three of his last four seasons, finishing one victory shy of that mark in He improved his team s win total in each of his first four seasons on the Island, culminating with the 2013 season, which was a historic season for the Islanders. The team finished with a record, including a then school-best 13-5 record in Southland Conference play. The Islanders also made history by advancing to the semifinals of the conference tournament for the first time. In the last four years at TAMUCC, Graystone collected a record, including a record in Southland play. In 2014, the Islanders made their fourth consecutive appearance and fifth overall trip to the Southland Tournament. For the second-straight year, the Islanders advanced to the semifinals while finishing with a record, including an 11-5 record in conference play. The squad set a school record in 2012 with a mark. The Islanders won 12 Southland matches and finished third in the conference, both first-time accomplishments for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. After Graystone took over the program, the Islanders improved their national RPI by 235 spots, making them the most improved NCAA Division I team in the country by the end of Prior to his stint at the Island, Graystone spent 10 seasons as the head coach at West Texas A&M in Canyon, where he posted a record and became the all-time winningest coach in program history. His.837 winning percentage was the third-highest among active NCAA Division II head coaches and he reached 300 victories faster than any other coach in the division s history. He reached 100 wins in 106 matches making him the quickest coach at the time in any NCAA sport or division to reach the century mark in wins. He was named the Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year five times and the AVCA Southwest Region Coach of the Year on four occasions. At West Texas A&M, he guided the Lady Buffs to five NCAA Regional appearances and eight Lone Star Conference crowns in 10 seasons. He mentored 16 All-Americans and one Division II National Player of the Year in His 2001 team was ranked No. 1 for seven weeks, while his 2002 team held the top spot for five weeks. In 2003, his team set an NCAA standard with 77 conference wins in a row. Before becoming the head coach of WT, Graystone was an assistant coach for the Lady Buffs and was part of a coaching staff that won the NCAA Division II Championship in He also served as the program director for the Amarillo Junior Olympic Volleyball Club. He began his career as a head coach at Waggener and Ballard High Schools in Louisville, Kentucky. Graystone earned an M.S. in exercise physiology from the University of Louisville in 1996 after graduating with a B.S. in Health Sciences with an emphasis in exercise science from Grand Valley State (Mich.) in He and his wife Lauren, a native of Whitharral, Texas, have two sons, Drew and Dylan.
