Women s Volleyball Head Coach Rick Rykse begins his 8th season as the head coach at Muskegon Community College and 9th season overall as part of the Jayhawks Volleyball Program since first coming to

4 Women s Volleyball Head Coach Rick Rykse begins his 8th season as the head coach at Muskegon Community College and 9th season overall as part of the Jayhawks Volleyball Program since first coming to MCC in In 2017 the Jayhawks finished with an overall record of and a Conference record of 14-2 which was good for 2nd place in the MCCAA West Division. MCC also were runners up in the MCCAA State Tournament while finishing 3rd in Regionals. Once again the Jayhawks were ranked in the top 20 in the Nation. Many of the MCC players received post season awards highlighted by Robbie Berg receiving 1st Team All Amercan honors, MCCAA Players of the Year, Regional Player of the Year, and the John G. Thompson Student Athlete of the Year Award for MCC. Freshman Julie Brown also was 1st Team All Conference, All Region, and All Freshman team while Freshman Katie Veihl was 1st Team All Conference and All Freshman Team. Sophomore Samantha Hockstra was 2nd Team All Conference while sophomore Delaney Bennett made All Conference Honorable Mention. In 2016 the Jayhawks were once again ranked in the top 20 Nationally for the majority of the season and missed going to Nationals by one point after finishing the regular season in 2nd place in the MCCAA West Division. Some of the season highlights were wins over the #4, #5, #14, and #15 nationally ranked teams Volleyball In 2015 the Jayhawks qualified for the NJCAA National Championships in Phoenix, Arizona for only the 2nd time in school history with two 5 set victories over St. Clair County Community College in the Regional Finals. Coach Rykse was selected as Coach of the Year for District E. The Jayhawks were also crowned as MCCAA State Champions for the first time ever. The Jayhawks finished the season in 13th place at Nationals. In 2014 the Jayhawks finished with a conference record of 12-2 which was good for 2nd place in the MCCAA West Division. Their overall record was and concluded with a loss in the Regional Finals. The Jayhawks achieved a season high national ranking of 13. In 2013 the Jayhawks won the MCAA West Division Championship with a record of 13-1 while also finishing runner-up in the MCCAA State Tournament and Regional Tournament. Their 37-7 overall record kept the Jayhawks ranked in the top five in the nation for the majority of the season with a season high ranking of #3. In recognition of their success, Coach Rykse was selected as MCCAA West Coach of the Year. Over the past eight seasons the Jayhawks have a home record of 54-8 and have had a total of nineteen players selected as first team All Conference. MCC has also been ranked in the top 20 in the Nation for 8 consecutive years. Since 2013 there have been 3 Jayhawks selected as All Americans Beka German 2013, Lindsey Jacobs 2016, and Robbie Berg Prior to coming to Muskegon Community College Rick was the Head Coach at Davenport University from where he started the volleyball program in During his time at Davenport Rick had nine players receive all conference awards and in 2009 started a JV program. From , Rick was the head coach at Ravenna High School. During his time at Ravenna the Bulldogs captured four district titles, three regional titles, three Final 4 appearances, including two State runner-up finishes in Class C. Coach Rykse also received the award as Muskegon Chronicle All Area Coach of the Year on two occasions. Over the four seasons at Ravenna Rick had eight players receive MHSAA All State honors. Rick is the President and General Manager for Inside Out Volleyball in Muskegon, Michigan. He is also the Club Director of the Inside Out Juniors program and serves as the Master coach overseeing the training of all of the club teams. Rick is also the Tour Director of the Midwest Professional Volleyball Association which is a West Michigan-based beach volleyball tour that attracts pro and amateur players from throughout the Midwest. Rick has been married to Amy Rykse for the past 31 years and they have three boys; Adam, who begins his 3rd season as an assistant coach at Valparaiso University and recently was married to Jamie Ashmore who is the Head Coach at Indiana University South Bend, Zach, a 2015 graduate from Michigan State University who has assisted the MCC Team doing video and stats and Alex who begins his first season as the Head Varsity Volleyball Coach at Reeths Puffer High School. Their family resides in the Muskegon area.

5 Women s Volleyball Assistant Coach Lindsey Balcom will begin her 7th season serving as an assistant coach on the Jayhawk Volleyball Team. Lindsey returned to Muskegon Community College after having been a player on the 2002 and 2003 Jayhawk teams. The 2002 team was the most successful team in Jayhawks history with a 39-5 record and a 5th place finish at Nationals. Lindsey then went on to play at Aquinas College for two seasons where she had a successful career. In 2006 Lindsey graduated from Aquinas College with a degree in Sports Management and Business administration. Lindsey began her coaching career by serving as the Freshman Coach and then Junior Varsity Coach at Ravenna High School from 2002 through She has also been Coach Rykse s assistant coach for a total of 13 seasons including 4 seasons at Davenport University from Lindsey has also coached for Inside Out Juniors Volleyball Club for many seasons and serves as the Office Manager for the club. Lindsey and her husband Shane reside in Conklin with their 2 children Kaylee age 12 and Sawyer age 7. Both Lindsey and Shane are avid beach volleyball players and for the past four years Lindsey has finished the season ranked 1 or 2 on the MPVA Pro Beach Tour. Shane also is the Varsity Volleyball Coach at Coopersville High School and coaches a national travel team for Inside Out Juniors Volleyball 5

Women s Volleyball Assistant Coach Brooke Day will return to M.C.C. as an assistant coach on the Jayhawk Volleyball staff after competing for the Jayhawks in 2015 and 2016. While at M.C.C. Brooke competed as a defensive specialist and helped the 2015 team to a Regional Championship and an appearance at the NJCAA DII National Championship.

Brooke is a 2015 graduate of Big Rapids High School, where she competed for the cardinals in volleyball, softball, and track and field Volleyball
