In recognition of his work with at the Beach, in Cegles was named the Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year by his peers for the Division I non-football I-AAA sector of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. Cegles, who was hired as the school s 12th Director of Athletics in April 2006, has made an impact in the athletic department s ability to fundraise which is key to his goal of making Long Beach State not only the premiere school in the Big West Conference, but a player on the national stage when it comes to both athletics and academics. Since coming to Long Beach State, Cegles has placed strong emphasis on resource acquisition targeting the annual fund, capital improvements, scholarship endowments, ticket sales and corporate sponsorships. He established what is now known as the Beach Athletic Club in 2006 and focused on centralizing annual giving. The reorganization has enabled teams to continue sport-specific solicitations and provide consistent recognition and benefits to donors. The annual fund has increased in each year of Cegles tenure, and in 2015 reached over $2.3 million dollars in total gifts towards Athletics. Cegles continues to focus on facility enhancements and a $25 million capital campaign for athletics. Within the last year, Long Beach State debuted the largest in-arena basketball videoboard in the nation, a 14x60 foot screen with a HD production crew to match. Cegles also achieved one of the major capital goals of his tenure, as the Jack Rose Track Stadium opened in 2015 after a $4 million renovation, turning a once-dilapidated track into one of the finest facilities in the nation. Other major projects that have been finished under Cegles include a $2 million expansion and renovation of the Walter Pyramid locker rooms, providing state of the art homes for men s and women s basketball and volleyball and a strength and conditioning center within the Walter Pyramid overlooking the floor, which was redone in 2014 with all-maple flooring, replacing the original beechwood installed in Additionally, new scoreboards have been installed for baseball, softball, soccer, tennis, and water polo, along with the installation of lights at George Allen Field. Under Cegles leadership the university entered a long-term 55-year lease with the city of Long Beach to operate the iconic Blair Field, ensuring an improved home for Dirtbag baseball. With that commitment, a $17 million campaign for improvements at Blair Field is underway, which includes a new practice infield, safer walls and remodeled batting cages, locker room, offices and suites at the iconic stadium. Four-time MLB All-Star Troy Tulowitzki pledged $1 million to the project, offered at his LBSU Hall of Fame induction, which breaks ground for Phase 1 in Cegles and Beach Athletics have also contracted with Learfield Sports Marketing, outsourcing all media and sponsorship rights with the national collegiate sales company. Learfield spearheads a commitment to increasing corporate sponsorships and sales of season and individual game tickets for baseball and basketball. Overall attendance rose in nine of the ten ticketed sports of Long Beach State last season, and the 49ers consistently rank second in the Big West in Men s Basketball attendance to only Hawai i. Long Beach State has excelled both on the playing fields and in the classroom under Cegles leadership. For the ninth consecutive year all NCAA sponsored teams at Long Beach State scored above the required 925 on the Academic Progress Rate (APR), the only California State University to do so under the four-year standard, and 83 student-athletes were recognized as Academic All-Conference honorees after meeting competition and academic standards, most often a 3.2 cumulative GPA. Diversity in the coaching and administrative staff is a fundamental goal and the athletics department was recognized under Cegles leadership in 2008 as a national NCAA diversity winner. Competitively, in his nine seasons at the helm of the Long Beach State athletic department, the 49ers have won 34 conference championships, with 33 LBSU teams advancing to the NCAA Tournament. Long Beach State has become the gold standard of the Big West Conference, winning five straight Commissioner s Cups, awarded annually to the most successful athletic department as a whole. The 49ers have won six of the last seven cups, and set a competition points record in The Beach captured three Big West Championships last season, in Women s Tennis, Men s Track & Field, and Women s Volleyball. Women s Tennis has now won either the regular-season or tournament title in 12 straight seasons, and Men s Track and Field has won three Big West Championships in a row. The Beach Volleyball program, established under Cegles tenure, won the national championship, and reached the AVCA finals for the third time in four seasons. Cegles has reorganized and refocused the entire administrative staff, and also negotiated new contract extensions for men s basketball coach Dan Monson and women s volleyball coach Brian Gimmillaro. During his tenure, Cegles has also hired nine new head coaches in softball, water polo, men s and women s golf, men s and women s basketball, and baseball. From Cegles was the associate athletics director at Temple University where he directed athletics fundraising, marketing and promotions, sponsorship and ticket sales while planning an athletics capital campaign with university development. Previously he was vice president of business development for Gaylord Sports Management in Scottsdale, Ariz., after serving 16 years at Arizona State University in athletic development and external affairs. He ultimately served as the lead senior associate athletic director for external affairs in his final two years at ASU. While at Arizona State he led the athletics department s $25 million capital campaign to enhance facilities and endowments and, among other responsibilities, supervised baseball, men s and women s golf and women s gymnastics. He also was the assistant athletic director for development at Rutgers University for five years. Cegles served as assistant basketball coach at Carnegie Mellon University and as an assistant basketball and baseball coach at West Virginia Wesleyan College and Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He holds a degree in business administration from Bucknell and a master s in counseling and student personnel services from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Cegles and his wife Bonnie have two sons. Vic, a former baseball standout at Rutgers, is the Director of External Relations for Athletics at Minnesota and Casey, a former wide receiver at Towson University, is Deputy Athletic Director at Kent State. The venue has also served as the host site for the NBA Summer Pro League and CIF Basketball Playoffs. It s also the site of many commercials and feature films. The Walter Pyramid is believed to be the largest space-frame structure in North America. If the tubes were laid end-to-end, they would form a pipe span 26 miles long CONSECUTIVE Big West Commissioner s CupS

WELCOME TO THE BEACH ABOUT WALTER PYRAMID The home of Long Beach State basketball and volleyball for over 15 years, the Walter Pyramid has become a nationally recognized icon for the university and the city of Long Beach. Because of its dramatic appearance, its unique multi-purpose capability and its lure for television production, the Walter Pyramid is one of the finest collegiate athletic facilities in the western United States. On March 5, 2005, the pyramid was officially named the Walter Pyramid, thanks to the generous donations presented to the university by Dr. Mike and Arlene Walter. Long-time supporters of the school, the Walters gift to athletics and academics was the largest single gift in LBSU Athletics history. Officially opened on November 30, 1994, the Beach rolled to a win over the University of Detroit before a crowd of 5,021 and an ESPN television audience. The structure s distinctive cobalt blue exterior has permanently altered the city s skyline. It rises 18 stories above north campus and can be seen for miles in all directions. It has provided a quantum leap in both the image and effectiveness of the Long Beach State Athletics programs, with an immediate impact on LBSU s fan base, scholarship fundraising, recruiting and revenue generation. Nearly 200,000 visitors pass through the Walter Pyramid s entrances annually. Designed by Long Beach architect Don Gibbs and built by the Nielson Construction Company of San Diego, The Walter Pyramid cost approximately $22 million. The Myd (as it is affectionately referred to by loyal fans) measures 345 feet on each side of its perfectly square base. Its floor space accommodates nine volleyball courts or three full basketball courts and four additional half basketball courts on the activity level. One of three true pyramids in the United States (others are located in Las Vegas and Memphis), The Walter Pyramid s most unique feature is its cantilevered seating system, mounted on moveable platforms. When use of the floor level is required for physical education classes, each 81-ton seating platform can be raised hydraulically to expose over 39,000 square feet of flooring. 42 WELCOME TO THE BEACH CHAMPIONSHIP FACILITIES LONG BEACH STATE UNIVERSITY Long Beach State s facilities remain some of the best in the Big West and are competitive nationally while serving as the home of the LBSU sports teams. From the university s enduring icon, the cobalt-blue Walter Pyramid to the history and tradition of Blair Field, athletes that come to play at The Beach will showcase their skills in only the finest home stadiums. WALTER PYRAMID The Walter Pyramid has become a nationally recognized icon for the university and the city of Long Beach. Because of its dramatic appearance, its unique multi-purpose capability and its lure for television production, the Walter Pyramid is one of the finest collegiate athletic facilities in the Western United States. One of three true pyramids in the United States, the Walter Pyramid measures 345 feet on each side of its perfectly square base. The most unique feature is inside, where its cantilevered seating system can be raised hydraulically to expose over 39,000 square feet of maple flooring. RHODES TENNIS CENTER Long Beach State s newest facility, opened in 2008, the tennis team s home was remodeled following a gift from former 49er tennis player and alum Terry Rhodes. GEORGE ALLEN FIELD Named after former LBSU football coach George Allen, the field is the home of Long Beach State women s soccer, and features lights and new scoreboard installed in JACK ROSE TRACK Long Beach State s Jack Rose Track recently underwent a multi-million dollar renovation. The completed project showcases a facility that is among the very best in the United States. The centerpiece is the track and its design features. When all phases are completed, the stadium will boast seating for 5,000 spectators and allow for additional team and student seating. With this, and other important elements accomplished, this redesign will complete the vision of a national-class facility that can play host to major invitational meets as well as NCAA and U.S. Track and Field championships CONSECUTIVE Big West Commissioner s CupS

WELCOME TO THE BEACH BLAIR FIELD CAMPUS POOL Home of Long Beach State s men s and women s water polo. The Campus Pool received a new scoreboard in the summer of LBSU SOFTBALL COMPLEX The LBSU softball complex is the on-campus home to Long Beach State s softball team. It rests south to the southeast of Walter Pyramid and right next to George Allen Field. VIRGINIA COUNTY CLUB & EL DORADO PARK The home courses for Long Beach State s men s and women s golf teams aren t pictured here but are two of the best that Long Beach has to offer. 5 CONSECUTIVE Big West Commissioner s CupS LONG BEACH STATE UNIVERSITY Home of the Dirtbags since 1993, Long Beach s Blair Field is a perfect combination of tradition and modern function. Built on the site of the former recreation park, home at times to the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers, Blair Field has hosted numerous teams and events such as the MTV Rock & Jock Softball Game and continues to receive start-of-the-art upgrades, including a new scoreboard installed in

WELCOME TO THE BEACH A CHAMPIONSHIP EDUCATION Directed by Sandra Shirley, the purpose of the Center is advising to ensure that each student-athlete is enrolled in appropriate courses leading to a degree while maintaining their eligibility. LONG BEACH STATE UNIVERSITY The Bickerstaff Center for Student-Athlete Academic Services has established itself as a unique and important asset in the lives of 49er student-athletes. The center s Career Connection program spotlights internships in the sports industry. They also offer a freshmen mentoring program which connects freshmen with veteran student-athletes. Each student--athlete has a file created and their progress is monitored throughout their education. He or she is aided in choosing a degree, developing proper study habits and keeping a balance between personal, scholastic and athletic lives. Student-athletes can choose from a multitude of renowned academic schools and 81 undergraduate degree programs. Programs in the colleges of business, physical therapy, art and engineering are nationally famous. The schools of communications, radio/television and education are also strong. June 21, 2006 was the grand opening of the new Bickerstaff Student-Athlete Academic Center. Formerly known as the Center for Student-Athlete Academic Services, the new center nearly triples the size of the previous space. The center provides a top-of-the-line facility for our student-athletes to get the academic support and assistance they deserve. The center is named after Glen and Debbie Bickerstaff of Los Alamitos (pictured at right), both loyal supporters of 49er athletics. The Bickerstaffs have been involved with Long Beach State for several years and have given nearly $1 million dollars in donations to the student-athlete scholarship program. They donated $625,000 for the Legacy campaign which went towards the naming of the new center. Their second legacy commitment was for $250,000 to help with the completion of the student-athlete strength and conditioning complex. The Bickerstaff Academic Center provides quality academic services to 49er student-athletes. This includes advising, to ensure that each student-athlete is enrolled in the appropriate courses so they may earn their degrees while maintaining athletic eligibility. The Bickerstaff Academic Center is geared to maximize student-athletes chances for classroom success through a developmental advising program integrating academic, student, and athletic assistance. The opening of the center provides 49er student-athletes the best academic support facility in the Big West Conference CONSECUTIVE Big West Commissioner s CupS

WELCOME TO THE BEACH BEACH STRENGTH & CONDITIONING Overseeing the program are head strength and conditioning coach Jamie Hiegel and assistant coaches Chris Whittle, Frank Ramirez and Keegan Knoll. At Long Beach State, athletes are exposed to techniques that will help build a character foundation necessary to succeed in life through hard work, pride, dedication, and a commitment to excellence. All training movements are sport specific to copy a student-athlete s performance during competition. Programs are specifically designed to promote injury prevention by pre-habilitating the student athlete and allow them to match the demands of their sport.
