30 Spring Recap Gamecocks Capture SEC Coaches Beach Volleyball Championship South Carolina took home the Commissioner s Trophy from the second SEC Coaches Beach Volleyball Championship, held on Siesta Key near Sarasota, Fla. The Gamecocks boasted of finalists in the top two brackets, including the winners in the silver bracket, Bridget Denson-Dorman and Ivana Kujundzic. They swept through pool play before blasting their way to the finals with wins of 21-8, and In the finals, the seniors defeated Georgia s duo of Kathleen Gates and Valentina Gonzalez, Also in the silver bracket, Megan Laughlin and Lindsey Roy made the semifinals after going 4-2 in their pool to finish second. The pairing won their first-round match in the silver bracket by four and the second-round encounter by six before meeting the buzzsaw of Denson-Dorman and Kujundzic. Last year s top pair from South Carolina, Jordan Bradosky and Hannah Lawing, nearly captured the gold division title. They tied for first in their pool, going 6-2, good enough to earn a bye into the quarterfinals. They trounced Georgia s Carla Tietz and Erika Clark, to move on to the semifinals, where they dropped Kentucky s Sarah Rumely and Sarah Mendoza, In the finals, the Gamecock pairing had an advantage late, but Tennessee s Kylie Marshall and Nikki Fowler came from behind to gain a win and claim the gold title. The freshman grouping of Olivia Ryder and Teresa Stenlund had a tough day on Siesta Key, winning their first set, over an LSU team, but they fell the rest of their pool matches. In the bronze bracket, the pairing fell to the eventual champ, Ann Dylla and Briana Bahr of Georgia, in the quarterfinals. The event also featured a few teams from outside the SEC in the Collegiate Beach Volleyball Challenge. Players from the University of South Florida won the gold and bronze brackets, while the University of Central Florida had a pairing claim the silver championship. This was the second SEC Coaches Beach Volleyball event, following the 2008 offering in Gainesville, Fla. The Gamecocks ranked second in the first event, coming in just behind Georgia. The event is among the many sand events across the country held for collegiate teams. The NCAA will vote this academic year on whether to make sand volleyball part of their emerging sports list for women. If approved, the national organization will codify rules for play and participation, with the chance of the sport becoming a fully-sanctioned sport with a national championship like women s rowing or women s bowling if enough teams participate.
