Mildred Lady Eagles Volleyball 2018 Handbook Tears are unused sweat Results are effort driven; people who put forth effort will see positive results

Lady Eagle Volleyball Handbook Practice time is a critical time for skill improvement, team building, speed and strength gains, and increasing sport specific knowledge. If an athlete misses this crucial time, make up work will be assigned. Informing the coach that you will miss a practice is as simple as a text message. It is the player s responsibility to inform a coach that a practice will be missed ahead of time. Having another player convey a message does not count as informing the coach. Coach Siegert s cell number is Rules for missing practices/ games If an emergency arises and there is no way the athlete can attend, she must contact a coach and inform him/her that practice will be missed. If the athlete does not make the proper contact, the missed practice will be viewed as an unexcused absence even if the athlete checks out with the front office or nurse. Unexcused absence from practice: 250 wall sets 200 wall passes 50 good serve and chases 25 burpees 10 volleyball horses 25 spike approaches with boxes from the outside, middle, and right side A player is not allowed to play until all of the above are completed. Nonetheless, it is still the coach s decision to play the student after an unexcused miss. UPON A 2 ND UNEXCUSED ABSENSE FROM PRACTICE/ GAME A MEETING WITH THE HEAD COACH WILL BE REQUIRED. IF A 3 RD UNEXCUSED ABSENSE OCCURS A MEETING WITH THE HEAD COACH AND ATHLETIC DIRECTOR MAY OCCUR TO DETERMINE WHETHER VOLLEYBALL IS THE PROPER LOCATION FOR THE STUDENT. WE WANT GIRLS IN THE PROGRAM THAT WANT TO IMPROVE AND IMPROVEMENT DOESN T HAPPEN BY AVOIDING PRACTICE; THEREFORE, PROPER STEPS WILL BE TAKEN TO REMOVE STUDENTS WHO DON T ATTEND PRACTICE.

Unexcused absence from game or tournament: 500 wall balls 300 wall passes 75 good serve and chases 35 burpees 20 volleyball horses 30 spike approaches with boxes from the outside, middle, and right sides A student is not allowed to play until all the above has been completed. If it is determined excused absences are actually unexcused absences, the athlete will receive the unexcused makeup work and face additional consequence drills. Excused absence from practice: 200 wall sets 100 wall passes 25 good serve and chases 5 volleyball horses 15 spike approaches from the outside, middle, and right side Excused absence from game: 250 wall sets 200 wall passes 25 good serve and chases 7 volleyball horses 15 spike approaches from the outside, middle, and right side 5 setting lines and 5 passing lines

If you know of an excused absence prior to the absence, make up work may be done before the date of the missed practice/ game. Excused absences include: Death of a family member or friend School-related activity (this may be over looked on occasion, but habitual misses will require make-up) Medical condition that requires a miss. This must have a dr s note accompanying the athlete, not a note from the parent. Any other situation that the coach considers acceptable for excused. Unexcused absences include: Placement in ISS/ DAEP/ OSS Not informing a coach of an excused absence Truancy from the athletic period or practice Any other excuse not mentioned in the excused list. An athlete being recruited for another sport may need to attend a college exposure tournament; however, make every effort to get back for your school competition Missed conditioning time during 2 a days: Conditioning and weight lifting missed during 2 a days must be made up in full before the athlete will be allowed to participate in games. Due to the number of games played per week a player will have the opportunity to play in a match that is the day after an excused absence, but will not be permitted to play in a match more than one day after an absence. Make up work will be done with a coach present and at the convenience of the coach. Make up work is not done during practice time. Ex.- Player misses on Thursday, she will be allowed to play Friday, but not Tuesday unless the make up work is completed. The coach also maintains the right to enforce other consequence drills for athletes on the basis of behavior or grades.

Personal Appearance: Athletic clothes must be worn during practice (school issued athletic shirt, spandex or school colored bubble shorts, knee pads, ankle braces and proper volleyball shoes. If an athlete is missing any clothes, there will be consequence drills assigned. Hair must be pulled back in a ponytail or braid if hair is long enough for such hairstyles and all visible jewelry removed, including piercings for games and practices. Cover up shorts need to be worn to load on the bus or to go to the instructional region of the school. Girls WILL NOT leave the gym into the instructional part of the school wearing spandex. All athletes must be dressed out with nets set up ready to begin practice 7 minutes after the tardy bell has rang. Exception: An athlete needing to receive some type of actions in the training room. Games and Tournaments: All athletes will remain with the team until the conclusion of the last game of the night during district play. The players on the court will be involved in the games. Teams who are not playing will support the team that is playing. As a program we should want the best for each person in our program. Players may sign out with parents at the conclusion of the last match of the night. Exceptions: Volleyball players with football responsibilities on Friday nights when there is a football game (ex.- cheer or band). During non-district play teams will be allowed to ride home with their parents at the conclusion of the next team s warm up time. Players will be required to call lines for some games through the season. If a player is calling lines for a non-district game, they will be required to stay until the conclusion of the next match. A schedule of line-callers will be posted in the locker room. It is each player s responsibility to call lines on the day she is assigned to calling lines. When the parent signs the player out, the player is no longer the responsibility of the school; therefore, no player may leave during a tournament while games remain and still be allowed to play the remaining games. Parents may bring food back to the gym for the daughter to eat. Players will only be signed out to her parent or guardian. A parent may send a note for a player to ride home with another adult, but the note will need to be verified and signed by the office before we leave on the bus. We will not wait for a player to run to the office to get the note signed. Players will not be released to best friend s parents, siblings, or extended family unless coaches have received a note from the parent with the parent s number on it and signed by the high school office before the bus leaves the school. Players will NEVER be released to a significant other even if the player is considered a legal adult. Emergencies arise and may warrant this policy to be bent, such as a parent being in an accident and transported to the hospital. In this event, a coach will need to speak with someone close to the

situation to inform us of what steps need to be taken. IF FALSE REPORTS ARE GIVEN ABOUT AN ACCIDENT THAT DIDN T ACTUALLY OCCUR, THE PLAYER WILL BE SUBJECT TO CONSEQUENCES. Athletes are not allowed to leave the gym area (gym, restroom, concession stand). If they go to the restroom or concession stand they must go with a buddy on the team. Athletes need to return to the gym as quickly as possible. Never leave any personal belongings on the bus. Digital devices: Digital device such as, but not limited to cell phones are not to be used during practice times unless otherwise instructed. Cellular devices should remain locked in the athlete s assigned locker. Cell phones are strictly forbidden from use during a game or at the conclusion of a game during instructional time. Use of a cell phone immediately following a match is discouraged due to the emotional nature of sports. Things that seem devastating at the moment may not seem as urgent one hour later or the next day. Social Media: Social media can destroy teams, friendships, and other relationships. Players and parents should avoid online bullying and inappropriate pictures or comments made directly or indirectly at team members, coaches, faculty, staff, or opposing teams. Disrespect: Disrespectful behaviors will not be tolerated toward the coaches, other players, referees or the opposing team. Arguing, refusal to do what is expected, and body language of disrespect (rolling eyes, shrugging shoulders in a manner of I don t care, etc) are a few behaviors that will not be tolerated. If any type of disrespect is perceived, the player will be subjected to consequence drills, informed to leave the gym, or removed from the program. If the player is asked to leave the gym due to these issues, she will have to do a full unexcused absence make up before she is eligible to participate in the next game regardless of how much time is left when the player is informed to leave the gym. Playing time: Playing time is not guaranteed at a varsity level. It is earned based on the coaches view of what players give the team the best chance to win. Subvarsity (JV/9 th /8 th /7 th grades) will allow all players time to participate in games for skill development. The playing time; however, will not be equal. The coaches WILL NOT discuss playing time with anyone other than the player. The only thing that will be discussed with the player is what the player needs to do to earn more playing time. Discussing another player s playing time or team placement (varsity, junior varsity, freshmen, or A and B teams) will not be

discussed. Athletic achievement is often a long process. Things players need to do for more playing time most often are things that takes weeks or months, not a day or two. Therefore, weight room, agilities, plyometric training, and conditioning are important year round. A player refusing to dress out during or after the season is not acceptable. All athletes should be making strides to improve year round. Letter jackets: Information can be found in the athletic code of conduct. Off-season training: Since it is very difficult to be successful at anything that is done for 3 months out of the year, it is very important to find other opportunities to improve volleyball skills. Some of the options available are camps, summer leagues, club volleyball, open gyms and private lessons. If a player wants information about any of the above activities, she can ask her coaches and they will provide her with a list of options. Weight room and agility training are also very important for improving speed, strength, and jumping ability. Summer workouts at school are six weeks long, four days a week for two hours. This opportunity will play a huge role in strength gains, jumping ability, speed improvements, and overall injury prevention. Any athlete who attends 18 summer workouts will be allowed to skip the strength and conditioning portion of two a days (Wednesday Aug 1 st and Monday Aug 6 th from 8 AM- 10 AM). Parent responsibilities: The emotional nature of sports often causes things to be said or done out of character for people; therefore, a coach will not discuss anything about a game with a parent for at least a period of 24 hours. Coaches also will not discuss anything that occurred more than 2 weeks before an athlete or parent contacts the coach. As stated above, playing time will never be discussed with a parent. Mildred High School will be considered a highly competitive program that show respect to other schools and the officials. Please refrain from negative comments or jeers during matches directed at our players, the other team, or the referees.

Lady Eagle Volleyball 2018 I read and understand the Lady Eagles Volleyball Rules for missing practices and games. I also understand to participate in this program I must abide by the rules of the team. Athlete s signature Date I understand my responsibility to my daughter and the success of her team is to allow the coaches to coach. In order for the team to reach its ultimate success level, I must stay out of the way of the coaches, support my daughter, but realize the team goals must come before individual achievement.
