1 WOLFPACK IN THE HOUSE WOLFPACK IN THE HOUSE NC State Wolfpack Women s Tennis No. 50 ITA Ranking 11-4 ( ACC) NEWS FROM THE NET: NOLES, CANES COME TO TOWN: No. 50 NC State will host two Atlantic Coast Conference matches this weekend, both against Florida teams. The Pack will battle No. 64 Florida State on Saturday, March 24, before taking on No. 7 Miami on Sunday, March 25. NC State enters play with an 11-4 (1-3 ACC) record. The Florida State Seminoles are 8-6 (1-3 ACC), while the Miami Hurricanes stand at 11-3 (4-0 ACC). Miami boasts three ranked players in singles (No. 3 Audra Cohen, No. 83 Audrey Banada and No. 102 Melissa Applebaum), as well as two ranked dous (No. 10 Applebaum/Cohen and No. 45 Banada/Dancevic). PACK CLIMBS POLLS: The Wolfpack is the No. 50 team in the country according to the latest Fila Collegiate Tennis Rankings released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) on Tuesday, March, 21. NC State, which began the season unranked, cruised to an 8-0 start, while knocking off No. 25 Florida International on the road, before being picked up by the pollsters. ORLAY, LEE RANKED: NC State has two players ranked in the newest singles polls. Senior Barbara Orlay is No. 118, while freshman Shona Lee comes in at No Orlay holds an 8-5 record, as Lee stands at 7-4. THE YOUTH MOVEMENT: A large part of the Pack s success this season is due to the play of its four freshman. Of the team s 65 singles victories, 27 total wins (41.5%) come from the new crop of teammates. 2 06 TEAM TIES BEST SEASON START: When the Pack advanced to 8-0 with a solid road showing in Florida, the red and white tied its best start to a season in school history. In the spring of 1995, coach Kelly Kay s squad began the season at 8-0 before falling at Vanderbilt. ONE FOR THE AGES: With a 4-3 road victory at No. 25 Florida International in Miami, Fla., on Sunday, Feb. 19, NC State recorded its first victory over a top-25 opponent in school history. After dropping the doubles point to begin play, the red and white stormed back to collect four singles decisions and earn the team victory. Freshmen Shona Lee, Alejandra Guerra and Neils Barringer, along with sophomore Julia Roach, picked up singles wins to the aide the team effort. LEE GRABS ACC HONOR: In just two weeks of competition with the Pack, freshman Shona Lee picked up ACC Player of the Week honors for the week of February 20. Against Florida Atlantic on Friday, Feb. 17, downed Claudia Kecht at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-1, after winning at No. 3 doubles with Julia Roach, 8-2, over Sandra Moreno-Perregaard and Danielle Simone. Two days later, Sunday, Feb. 19, Lee helped the Pack knock off No. 25 Florida Atlantic in Miami, Fla., serving as the program s first win over a top-25 team in school history. After dropping the first frame, Lee rallied back to defeat Shilla D Armas, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 2. OLSEN GETS 175TH: With the team victory over No. 64 Marshall on Sunday, Feb. 26, Hans Olsen netted his 175th career win as a head coach. He posted a record of as the head coach at Charleston Southern before taking the reigns of the Wolfpack program. NC State is during the Olsen era. ORLAY STARTS SPRING AT NO. 90: The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) preseason national rankings for singles play placed senior Wolfpack netter Barbara Orlay at No. 90 on the list. Orlay, a member of the 2004 All-ACC team, has spent much of her career at NC State listed in the national rankings. This past fall, Orlay posted a 9-4 record in solo bouts. A native of Budapest, Hungary, Orlay served as the No. 1 spot staple in the Wolfpack rotation all season long last spring, finishing second on the team in spring singles wins with 12.
