EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Vision and Mission Statements are specifically for our High Performance Program for Saskatchewan. They are as follows: VOLLEYBALL CANADA Vision Statement Be a world leader in volleyball Mission Statement Foster the growth and development of volleyball in Canada SASK VOLLEYBALL Vision Statement Volleyball is the sport of choice across Saskatchewan Mission Statement Sask Volleyball provides opportunities for people across Saskatchewan to enjoy quality experiences in volleyball through excellent services, effective partnerships, and promotion of the sport. SASK VOLLEYBALL HIGH PERFORMANCE Vision Statement On the podium by developing competitive athletes. Mission Statement To provide opportunities to athletes and coaches from across the province to represent the province on Provincial Teams, Post Secondary and National Teams. The Main overarching goal for the Sask Volleyball High Performance plan is to have our men s and women s High Performance Teams (NTCC, Western Canada Summer Games and Canada Games) achieve a competitive standing. Do we need to address a Team Goal as overarching? Or should the over arching goal be Athlete Development and an outcome of that being more competitive teams? for discussion. It is our goal to have athletes selected to Volleyball Canada s Youth, Junior and Select programs. Sask Volleyball High Performance Plan

We have identified three key categories in which we must focus on in order to accomplish our overarching goal. Under these categories are subsequent goals: ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT COACHING DEVELOPMENT DAILY TRAINING ENVIRONMENT Increase athlete attendance at ID Camps by 10% Establish yearlong individual athlete training programs for PT athletes. Develop criteria for selecting athletes to our PT. Identify High Performance athletes through club coaches and through an open invitation to attend PT ID Camps. Consider expansion of training group sizes rather than increasing final camp # s, which relates to increasing # of coaches involved as well as coordinating, budget, and pricing implications. To offer coaching development opportunities to have all our PT coaches certified Advanced Development Coaches. To have all our Canada Games coaches Performance Coach certified. To provide opportunities to our Post Secondary coaches to be a part of our Mentor coach program for the Men and Women s PT programs. Develop contacts and technology support for HP coaches in Purchase sufficient technology for all HP coaches by 2016 Collaborate with our Universities to have all High Performance athletes participate in their Prospect Camps. Cooperate with Sport Science to develop year round strength and conditioning, nutrition and mental training programs. Commented [BM1]: Used participate twice, just tried to add clarity here To invite the top 40 athletes to our Final Selection Camps. Sask Volleyball High Performance Plan

BACKGROUND AND BASIS FOR THE PROGRAM Below is an evaluation of our strengths and weaknesses and performance gaps: KEY CATEGORIES STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES Sufficient opportunities to Weak technical setting skills. participate in competitions. Limited number of High HP training opportunities? Performance setters how Healthy female numbers, do we approach this?. Athlete Development development and potential Poor ability to read and react to their read. Lack of depth in number of setting and middles Weak number of male athletes Trained facilitators Not enough Performance Large number of community coaches coaches for Provincial Team or CSG/WCSG Good certification Program Coaches unwilling to give up Quality personal to develop summer time Coaching Development programs. Coaching compensation Employment of year round Recruitment and retention Men and Women High Performance Coaches. of High Performance Coaches. Daily Training Environment Competition Hiring of Summer Students or beach and indoor programs. Athlete development is continuous Strong support from Sport, Science and Medicine. Year round training time to develop all areas Good opportunities to compete against other provinces.( NTCC, WCSG, CG) Youth, Select and Junior National programs available post NTCC competition. ID Camps with Subway Sask Cups. Selection Camp in late May Involvement of University and College coaches. Athletes spread out over the province. Athletes not having access to facilities. Coaches fear of athletes training with someone else Lack of gym time with supervision Adequate gym space Athletes over load of school, sports and life. Only one competition Cost of program. Short training period Lack of game preparation before competition Sask Volleyball High Performance Plan

Sport Sciences/Sports Medicine & Integrated Support team Great Sport/ Science team Programs are volleyball specific Supports coaches and athletes daily training. Do not have full access during HP season Short training period, needs to be year long. Governance/Management Strong organizational SP Support of the HP program Budget Politics Key Performance and Programs Gaps were also reviewed to help evaluate further: KEY PERFORMANCE AND PROGRAM GAPS Contributors to the Gap 1 Lack of individual technical development. 2 Lack of full time paid coaches, not enough Performance Coaches involved with the HPP Length of High School and Club season Insufficient gym time during club season/cost Limited together time to train Not enough incentives Coaches don t see the benefit to obtaining this level. Volleyball Canada controlled limited access. 3 Quality of tournaments to train at. 4 Athletes committed to train daily. 5 Limited access to Sport/Science programs and personnel. Quality athletes diluted over the province on individual High School and Club teams. Limited competitive HP tournaments during competitive phase. Many multi sport athletes Finance/time commitments. Not enough support from critical sport personal Knowledge of commitment needed to compete interprovincially. Availability/cost Needs to be developed outside of training times. Coaches and athletes don t stress this aspect of becoming overall athletes in volleyball Educational opportunities to become knowledgeable. Sask Volleyball High Performance Plan

In reviewing all of the strengths and weaknesses, program gaps and reflecting on our National and Provincial organizations, Sask Volleyball has established three main categories with ten sub goals to accomplish our over arching goal. Our goals, and activities are designed to address our weaknesses and gaps. The following High Performance Plan goals and programs were developed to align with and supporting Volleyball Canada s Vision and Mission statements as well as their High Performance Plan for GOALS, PROGRAMS, KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS MAIN OVERARCHING GOALS KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS Develop competitive athletes through coaching development and participation in competitive competitions. Compete at a competitive level by being successful in a set with a score difference of less than 5 points. Being successful with 75% of match play. By placing more than 2 athletes in each gender on the Youth, Select or Junior National Programs. 100% of Coaches are Development Coach certified; 75% are Advanced Coach Certified and 50% are Performance Coach certified. 100% of coaches are pursuing Maintenance Certification points opportunities throughout the year. Commented [BM3]: This is also a little redundant probably needed to clarify. Commented [BM2]: Feel like we need another word here as we use competitive twice...i found our athletes to be significantly less conditioned than those in our neighboring provinces could this be something we address here? I.E. we can ensure we have our athletes compete in challenging competition, but if they aren t physically prepared for what is outside our province (endurance wise) then we don t set them up for success. I can explain further when we meet. ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT Identification Camps are held in conjunction with all Subway Sask Cups. These ID Camps are open to any athlete to attend. If an athlete was a member of our Provincial Team the previous summer, they do not have to attend and ID Camp and will receive a direct invitation to the Final Selection Camp. The sessions run for two hours and include, testing (block, jump, speed, height and reach), basic skill display (passing, attacking, serving, setting) and controlled 6 vs 6 play. All drills will allow the athlete to show case their skills and abilities. The ID Camps will be held in Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert, Yorkton, Lloydminster, Martensville, Moose Jaw, Swift Current and Warman. Sask Volleyball High Performance Plan

From the ID Camps, athletes will be selected to attend the different age and gender Final Selection Camps to be held the last weekend in May (following the competition of Club Nationals). The Final Selection Camps will be held when possible at the University of Regina and the University of Saskatchewan. Following the set criterion for the selection of athletes, HP coaches and mentor coaches is this consistent with other docs?will select between 12 and 15 athletes do we need to list this #, and whether or not look at growing the # per age groups per gender to represent Sask Volleyball at Western Canada Games, Canada Games and National Team Challenge Cup. Sask Volleyball will send one female and one male team to WCSG and CSG in the years they are held. For NTCC Championships, Sask Volleyball will send two, 16U female and male teams and one female and male 18U team. Maybe don t list how many teams, only that we intend to train with at least one team per age group depending on numbers at the discretion of the Technical Director. More teams maybe added based on athlete numbers, skill level, coaching availability and budget. Establishing a yearlong training conditioning program for the Provincial Team (PT) athletes is going to further develop and condition their bodies to help improve the results of the previous year and ensure they can endure competition outside our province. It gives them something to work towards. Commented [BM4]: Just clarifying the who here Commented [BM5]: I like the term conditioning here; as that implies more sport science than actually gym training which is what we are working on. I also recommend we do focus on that element of increasing their endurance as they compete with others in the country. Identifying athletes through club coaches will give the athletes a sense of worth. Knowing that they are being looked at ahead of time, and giving them things to work on, will help prepare them for the I.D. camps as well as tryouts. HIGH PERFORMANCE GOALS ACTIVITIES KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS TIMELINE BUDGET Increase athlete attendance at Identification Camps by 10% Establish yearlong individual athlete training programs for HP athletes. Develop and impellent criteria for selecting athletes to our HPP Offer 10 ID camps the Friday night prior to Subway Sask Cups Work in conjunction with Sport/Science Council and coaches currently involved in HPP Develop criteria based on past practices and research. 10% more athletes attending then in 2014/2015 Athletes receive a personal training program. Criteria utilized for 2015 ID selections $40.00 per athlete This should be the $$ it costs us, not what it costs athletes $3, N/A Sask Volleyball High Performance Plan

4 Obtain information and nominations from club coaches for athletes able to perform and train at an elite level. Club coach/program to recommend athletes for the HPP. HPC to observe athletes at tournament, provincial championships and National Championships. HP coaches follow up with personal contact to athlete and coaches $1, Recommend the appropriate number of training sessions. Training to take place Monday to Friday vs Thursday to Sunday or different combination of days. Maximizing athlete and coach efficiency $10, plus? DAILY TRAINING ENVIRONMENT Purchasing the latest technology would be a great tool to help the athletes develop physically and technically. The advances in video technology helps the visual learners see what they are doing, and what they should be doing. Coaches should be supported while training of any technology provided with technology to support athlete training. Commented [BM6]: Just trying to clarify that a bit. High Performance Athletes should be supported financial with their attendance at one or both of the Prospect Camps offered by the U of R and the U of S in order to focus on specific technical and tactical skills they need to develop in order to grow their skills. See below in blue 1 2 HIGH PERFORMANCE GOALS Purchase sufficient ipads/program technology for each Provincial Team. 100% of Provincial team athlete participation in one of the Universities Prospect Camps. ACTIVIES Develop programs and technology support for HP coaches in Provincial team athletes commit to yearlong training. KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS HP coaches provided with ipads/programs and evidence of use to benefit athletes and practice planning. 100% of athletes involved in one Prospects Camp. TIMELINE BUDGET $4, May, 2016 Support Provincial Team athletes with a 50% Sask Volleyball High Performance Plan

reduction of registration fees. 3 Support Provincial Team Coaches to become fully Advanced Development Coach or Performance Coach certified. Support coaches with educational workshops/conferences. Consider video/stats training for coaches, or hiring team supports to serve in that function. Participate in Advance/Performance workshops. Attend and attend conferences ie Art of Coaching. 75% of Provincial Team Coaches are Advanced Coach certified and 50% are Performance Coach certified. Support coaches attendance at appropriate conferences. $7, ($75.00 X 90) Not sure I support this in current model of Fundraiser for university programs. What would universities give back? $4, Likely need $1 1.2K per coach to attend AoC Workshop COACHING DEVELOPMENT We want to be identifying and helping develop young coaches that are demonstrating consistent achievement at a club and High Performance level. We feel that having a Mentor Coach available will be a huge asset in their development. Coaches will have access to their expertise and experience. This program will also be beneficial in passing the torch to the future High Performance Coaches. 1 HIGH PERFORMANCE GOALS Continue our Mentor coach program for the Men and Women s HP programs. ACTIVITIES Appoint Mentor Coaches develop a Mentor KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS Mentor Coach appointed and guidelines developed. TIMELINE BUDGET 2016 $1, Sask Volleyball High Performance Plan

2 Develop a pool of 2 4 Development/Apprentice coaches per gender, to work with Provincial Team Program to future experience and prepare for High Performance coaching. Consider specialty coaches (i.e. setter coach) Coach set of guidelines. Have 2 4 Apprentice coaches per gender involved with the program. Focus on inviting University athletes or promising Development/Advanance development Coaches $2, $3, per year.
