5 WHAT IS THIS PROJECT Project Overview The City of Lake Forest Park is hoping to make its streets safer for all users and to increase safe connections to transit and amenities like the Burke-Gilman Trail, Interurban Trail, parks, and schools, so the City wants to hear from you to identify community priorities. Through this process, we hope to accomplish four goals: 5

6 WHAT IS THIS PROJECT Safe Streets vs. Safe Highways There is a concurrent project happening, called Safe Highways, which is looking at the two state highways and how to make them safer, more accommodating to transit, and more walkable and bikeable. The Safe Streets project is separate and is looking at all the local streets in Lake Forest Park. 6

Mobility Goal: Provide, maintain and enhancing a safe, accessible and integrated mobility system, emphasizing bicycle, walking, safe streets and transit connectivity, consistent with the character of Lake Forest Park. 9

10 CONTEXT Comprehensive Plan Guidance Vision Statement Excerpt Our neighborhoods are safe and connected to each other and to community gathering places by well-designed paths, sidewalks and bike lanes. Transportation Element Guides the creation of an adaptive transportation system in Lake Forest Park that supports the City s vision and character. Consistent with State Growth Management Act, WSDOT Strategic Plan, regional growth and transportation planning guidance. Transportation Goal Excerpts: Goal T-2: Improve safety for non-motorized transportation, and expand nonmotorized transportation access to Lake Forest Park neighborhoods and destinations (parks, schools, Town Center, transit, Burke-Gilman Trail), and for recreation. Goals T-3 & T-5: Call for minimizing and managing cut-through traffic and minimizing the impact of state highways on quality of life. 10

24 11 Bike/Ped Access Improvements To improve access and safety for bicycles/ pedestrians on NE Perkins Way, either: Widen the street to provide a shared-use trail (like the Burke-Gilman) to provide a safe route for cyclists and pedestrians, or Convert the street to 1-way and build a shared-use trail in the existing roadway.
