California Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Curriculum A standards-based curriculum project of the California Healthy Kids and After School Resource Center and the California Safe Routes to School Technical Assistance Resource Center
California Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Curriculum Nine, 60-minute lessons for grades four and five. Aligned with the Common Core State Standards and the California Health Education Standards. Integrated with English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Health, and Physical Education.
Overview of the Lessons Time to Get Moving! Topic: Health Benefits of Walking and Bicycling (Physical Education focus) Students make a plan for scheduling 60 minutes of exercise into their daily lives. Get Your Helmet On! Topic: Bicycle Safety Students analyze the influences that contribute to bicyclists wearing helmets and create persuasive advertisements to teach about bicycle safety. Exercise Your Superpower! Topic: Health Benefits of Walking and Bicycling (Science focus) Students explore the health benefits of physical activity and create comic strips showing the superpowers of physical activity.
Overview of the Lessons Design Your Own Traffic Sign Game Topic: Pedestrian Safety Students identify the meaning and importance of traffic signs. They design and play games to learn about traffic signs. Prescribe a Pollution Diet! Topic: Environmental Impact of Walking and Bicycling Students learn how transportation choices impact air pollution. They help Pollutey Judy calculate and reduce the amount of air pollution that she produces each day. Silent Safety Signals Topic: Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety (Physical Education Focus) Students learn how nonverbal communication helps people stay safe while walking and bicycling. They play games to practice using bicycle hand signals and eye contact.
Overview of the Lessons Rules of the Road Topic: Pedestrian and Bicycle Laws Students learn about pedestrian and bicycle safety laws and consider real-life scenarios where these laws apply. How Can We Be Safe on Our Routes to School? Topic: Safe Routes to School Students examine factors that affect pedestrian and bicycle safety and assess the safety of their routes to school. Getting to School What s the Cost? Topic: Environmental Impact of Walking and Bicycling Students evaluate the environmental, practical, and monetary cost of different modes of transportation.
Why Integration? Teaching integrated lessons allows students to think across subject areas, seeing connections and navigating real-world situations. Integration allows teachers to fit more content into their busy days.
Integration: A Closer Look Lesson 5: Prescribe a Pollution Diet Evaluate the pros and cons of different modes of transportation and consider the safety of each. Use the calculation 1 mile = 2.3 pounds of air pollution to determine how much air pollution Judy is creating each day, and calculate how much air pollution is saved per day when Judy is on her pollution diet. Write opinion pieces convincing Judy of the importance of making safe and eco-friendly transportation decisions.
Subject Integration Mathematics Integration: Students work with the calculation 1 mile = 2.3 pounds of air pollution to determine how much air pollution Judy is creating each day. They use mathematics in a real-world context by multiplying and adding to calculate the amount of air pollution Judy produces. English Language Arts Integration: Students write opinion pieces convincing Pollutey Judy of the importance of making safe and eco-friendly transportation decisions. Health Integration: Students identify ways to increase and monitor physical activity. They encourage and promote healthy eating and increased physical activity opportunities.
Behold: The Standards!
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts/Literacy Grade 4 Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.4, CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.5.1 Students meet this standard by writing opinion pieces convincing Judy of the importance of making safe and eco-friendly transportation decisions.
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics Grade 4 Grade 5 Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm. CCSS.Math.Content.4.NBT.B.4 Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two twodigit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models. CCSS.Math.Content.4.NBT.B.5 Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtractions; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used. CCSS.Math.Content.5.NBT.B.5 Students meet these standards by working with the calculation 1 mile = 2.3 pounds to determine how much air pollution Judy is creating each day.
California Health Education Content Standards for Nutrition and Physical Activity Grade 4 Grade 5 Standard 1: Essential Concepts Identify ways to increase and monitor physical activity. 1.8.N Standard 8: Health Promotion Encourage and promote healthy eating and increased physical activity opportunities at school and in the community. 8.1.N Students identify ways to increase and monitor physical activity. They encourage and promote healthy eating and increased physical activity opportunities.
