11 RESULTS OF WORKSHOP 2 (August 25) Option A OPTION A: FACE LIFT POSITIVES Redesigned crosswalks, visible pedestrian striping Colored bike path PROPOSED CHANGES Line up sidewalks and crosswalks Make the streets narrower and the islands bigger Separate bike lanes and sidewalks with striping Add something to address U-turns Add better signage for cars turning out of Yacht Rd. Add a stop sign for eastbound from Mason St. Move the bike signals to the bike lane OPTION A will be combined with OPTION B to form a combined OPTION A/B. 12 RESULTS OF WORKSHOP 2 ( August 25) Option B OPTION B: FULLY SIGNALIZED INTERSECTION (INCLUDES A) POSITIVES Fully signalized movements Striping and phasing helps conflict of cars going from Mason to Marina Good visibility for vehicles coming out of Yacht Road Maintains restrictions for large vehicles/trucks PROPOSED CHANGES Fix the clumsy/narrow lane right turn from westbound Marina onto Yacht Road Add something to address U-turns Revise the right turn from eastbound Doyle to Lyon Replace the Mason Street bike lanes Add bike lanes on Marina Expand the islands Improve striping on bike path Replace westbound Marina lane Adjust timing to work with all modes and volumes OPTION B received favorable comments and will be carried forward as a refined COMBINED OPTION A/B. It can be recommended to DPT as a short-term implementation, minimal cost improvement. Note: Shaded comments do not require changes to the design option

13 RESULTS OF WORKSHOP 2 (August 25) Option C OPTION C COUPLET YACHT RD IN, BAKER ST OUT - Eliminates Yacht Rd/Mason St Conflict - Baker St Extension Becomes Egress for Yacht Clubs OPTION C: COUPLET - YACHT RD IN, BAKER ST OUT POSITIVES Pedestrian crossings are simple PROPOSED CHANGES Still a five-way intersection (same geometry as before) Adds an additional street thru Marina Green and an additional bike crossing Results in loss of open space Check with DPT if the Baker/Marina intersection will work, will it be signalized Check if Baker can be so close to the water (BCDC) Clearly identify the bike path Add a stop bar for southbound Baker OPTION C received both positive and negative comments, it will be refined Note: Shaded comments do not require changes to the design option - 5 -

14 RESULTS OF WORKSHOP 2 (August 25) Option D OPTION D FOUR POINT INTERSECTION T - Creates Four Point Signalized Intersection - Eliminates Yacht Rd/ Mason St Conflict - Simplifies Overall Movement - Improves Aesthetics OPTION D: FOUR POINT INTERSECTION T POSITIVES Improves maneuvers for large vehicles Simple configuration, clear design PROPOSED CHANGES Impacts historical features Its a clumsy intersection Check if the turning radius is adequate for boats and busses/show proof that the geometry works Further define pedestrian areas and bike lanes Improve bike lane direction and clarity at Yacht and Mason Add a right turn lane from Marina to Yacht Show that a back up at Mason and Yacht won t be a problem Show more than one lane for Lyon Show two lanes southbound on the connector OPTION D received both positive and negative comments, it will be refined Note: Shaded comments do not require changes to the design option

15 RESULTS OF WORKSHOP 2 (August 25) Option E OPTION E FOUR POINT INTERSECTION CRESCENT - Creates Four Point Signalized Intersection - Eliminates Yacht Rd/ Mason St Conflict - Enables Left Turn from Doyle Drive onto Yacht Rd/ Mason St - Attractive Terminus to Marina Blvd OPTION E: FOUR POINT INTERSECTION CRESCENT POSITIVES Simple movements Two lane crescent is positive Provides a right-turn from Marina Gives the appearance of more open space Encourages drivers to slow down Good to separate Mason and Marina PROPOSED CHANGES Impacts open space Driving access is negative The aesthetics are not beneficial Check if over designed- are two lanes needed? Replace a left turn from Doyle to Yacht Check if eastbound Mason movement is lengthy Check if signalized intersections are too close together and if they would impact the residents OPTION E received both positive and negative comments, it will be refined Note: Shaded comments do not require changes to the design option

68 5ive Corners Design Workshop Session #2 August 25, 2004 Questions and Clarifications on Options (recorded on flipchart and tape) Compatibility of the options with the plans for the new Doyle Drive Is there an internal rating of the options among the experts on traffic and design? Consider option of not having Doyle Drive feed into Marina Blvd at all and limit traffic on Marina Blvd to recreational and residential. Consider option of not doing anything Consider difference in traffic conditions on weekends and event days versus weekdays Insufficient notice was given on the design workshop meetings (at least on Baker St) Concern over safety would options increase traffic in the neighborhood? Which options allow a left turn from Doyle drive onto Mason St? What is the expected timeframe for the implementation of options? What is the expected increase in traffic on Marina Blvd once the Lucas garage opens? Possibility of a left turn from Doyle Drive onto Mason St west of the 5ive Corners intersection? SFCTA said all of Marina Blvd plus 1 ½ blocks south would be notified, yet many residents seem to not have heard about the 5ive Corners workshop sessions Recommendation not to make any long term changes at the intersection until the reconstruction of Doyle Drive is completed Some of the refined options are inconsistent with the SF Police Code which prohibits trucks and buses on Marina Blvd (residential street) Some of the refined options are inconsistent with the SF General Plan that demands mitigation for traffic near shorelines and recreational areas Refined options show two lanes in and out of Doyle drive although SF Board of Supervisors had adopted the Doyle Drive Task Force s report that called for one line in/one line out only Rationale for choosing traffic lights versus stop signs at the corner of Marina Blvd and Baker St? Length of average boat hauled into yacht Club is 22 to 24 ft and much shorter than some trucks coming in Is any consideration given to a pedestrian underpass? Request for copy of mailing list

Support for two lanes exiting Mason St. Why are Refined Options C and G still being considered in spite of low support? Concern over possible backup of traffic traveling westbound from Marina Blvd to Mason St due to the elimination of one lane. Recommendation to not restrict traffic flow in and out of Mason St Options C and G (extension of Baker St): Concern over 4-way stop at Baker St and Marina Blvd causing traffic backup, in particular during commute hours
