1 Causeway U3A The committee would like to wish a Happy Christmas and a peaceful new year to all our members. We look forward to seeing you at our monthly meeting on January 3rd and at activities old and new (see below) in January. ******************** Causeway U3A Activities Opportunity for Causeway U3A Members to express their Artistic Talents Ulster University has commissioned a sculpture as part of its 50 year celebrations. This will be created by the local artist Sara Cunningham-Bell. Her plan is to incorporate creations by the local community into the plinth of this large work. She will organise a competition with local schools. In terms of the older adult community, she has invited 9 members of Causeway U3A to become involved and to work with her. This will involve attendance at one morning workshop in the last week of January Those attending will make a tile from a form of clay to represent the work of Causeway U3A, especially our co-operation with UU in recent times in sports, drama and cookery. These tiles will be incorporated into the plinth of the sculpture and will be displayed there for posterity!

2 If you have some artistic talents and are interested in taking part in this workshop and project, please send an expression of interest to before Christmas. There are only 9 places, so, in case there are more than 9 applications, please add a short paragraph explaining why you should be chosen!! We will pass these on to Sara for discussion and selection. Some Information about the artist Belfast born Artist Sara Cunningham-Bell (C-B), works out of a studio on the North Coast of Ireland near Coleraine. Her work is figurative in form and documentary in approach. It can be either large or small in scale. Cunningham-Bell's work is part of the Art Collection of Bass Ireland Contemporary Fine art, Coleraine Council, The Hastings Hotel Group, The Vatican City, B.B. Fraser, McLaughlin and Harvey, Heriot-Watt University amongst a few. Her work is graphically employed by publishing houses - Eerdmans (U.S.), SCM-Canterbury, W.J Knox, Routledge Press, and C-Bs sculpture work has won a number of public competitions for DCAL, IRFU, Victoria College Belfast, the European Union Programme for Peace and Reconciliation an International Fund for Ireland. Her degree work won a prize which funded postgraduate studies at Edinburgh College of Art, after which her work has shown in over 40 group shows, eight solo shows in France, Luxembourg, Scotland and Ireland, with her sculpture work being selected to represent Ireland in the Grands et Jeunes D Aujourd Hui Salon 2000 Paris and Luxembourg.

3 ******************** Training Opportunity for Walk Leaders Rambling / Walking is one of the most popular outdoor activities offered by Causeway U3A. Any such activity presents the possibility of accidental injury and we are fortunate that to date all our members have been safe and enjoyed the company and health-giving experience of our walking groups. Every year we organise around 30 weekly rambles, each of which requires a leader. It has come to our attention that the Northern Health and Social Care Trust provides and funds a Walk Leader Training Course and we believe this presents a very helpful opportunity for us to support our existing walk leaders and to encourage others to consider leading walks for us. The provider is Nicola Arbuckle and she has agreed to provide such a course for Causeway U3A. The course covers such topics as:- Benefits of Walking Components of a Health Walk Risk assessment Special medical conditions Essential paperwork (based on the current U3A Guidelines) The methodology of the delivery is very interactive and allows members of the group to share experiences and learn from each other. It is normally a full day programme, but because of the age and experience of our members, Nicola has agreed to reduce it to a 2 hour session, followed by a light lunch. Proposed Venue: The Sandel Centre Proposed Date : Wednesday 16 th January, 10am - lunchtime

4 Maximum number of places: 20 At the end of this training, volunteers get a Certificate of Attendance and are added to a database of Walk Leaders within the Northern Health Trust which provides free insurance cover for them. Contact: chair@causewayu3a.co.uk ***************************************** Local Activities Carols for Christmas 2018 Walking Ecumenical Carol Service in Limavady 'Following from last year's successful service, it will be held again this year on Wednesday,19th December starting at 7pm in St Mary's Church, Irish Green Street, Limavady, followed by the Methodist Church and finishing at Christ Church, where there will be tea and scones/mince pies afterwards. Please wrap up warm as these churches are all in walking distance. DO come and support this, as there was an overwhelming desire last year to continue the project.' ******************** Sing Carols with Coleraine Community Choir This is on Friday, 21st December in First Coleraine Presbyterian Church, Abbey Street, Coleraine at 8pm. The conductor is Roberta Scott, accompanist Rebekah Reid, organist Peter Wilson and flautist Timothy Cairns. The offering is in aid of N.I. Children to Lapland and Days to Remember Trust. ******************** Dance Workshop

7 There is a workshop in January (12th &13th) in Portstewart Town Hall, for people to learn to do the lindy hop/east coast swing. It is organised by North Coast Swing. 'It is being led by a wonderful couple Ian (71) and Sheelagh (66) Hartley from Manchester who have been over here several years ago and led a very successful couple of day's fun. There is also a social dance on the Saturday evening. Of course he was far to wise to ring them to claim it! Remember, "if it sounds too good to be true, it isn't true. There is also a warning from the TV Licensing s about s offering a licence refund, in exchange for your bank details. Please do not be fooled and do not click on the link given.
