Money exchange: the easiest way of obtaining is from ATM machines located all across London. Money can also be exchanged at the ICE (International Currency Exchange) and Thomas Exchange Global branches located throughout London. Tipping: it is customary to leave 10-15% of the bill when eating out in restaurants. However, restaurants often add on a service charge (usually 12.5%), so it s worth checking your bill if you don t want to tip twice. Rounding 28

29 up on taxi fares/restaurant bills is appreciated. For example if the bill was 18.60, leave Public transport Bus: make sure that when you re on the bus that you push one of the buttons to alert the driver you wish to get off at the next stop. When waiting at a bus stop and you see your bus coming make sure you stick your arm out straight towards the road (careful not to get in the way of traffic) to signal the bus driver that you want them to stop. Train: the tube network is very busy during rush hour with commuters moving around the city. You can expect the trains and stations to be crowded between 7:30am and 9:30am and between 5:00pm and 7:00pm in the evening. If you are travelling during these times make sure you are aware of other passengers on the train, if you are carrying a big bag then placing it at your feet is a good way to make space. Clothes and shoes: Coats, scarves, hats, gloves and warm jumpers are a good idea. Comfortable walking shoes are essential as there will be a lot of walking through central London and a waterproof coat is also recommended. Electricity: UK power sockets deliver an average voltage of 230V, although in practice this can be slightly higher. To charge devices that are compatible with this voltage, simply buy the appropriate adapter from the airport or from high street shops such as Argos. Electricity type A, British 3-pin. Cockney London A true Cockney is someone born within the sound of Bow Bells, rung from St Mary-le-Bow Church in Cheapside, East London. Cockney rhyming slang is a humorous slang, first used by cockneys in the east end of London. It was invented in the 1840s by market traders, costermongers (sellers of fruit and vegetables from handcarts) 29

30 Some useful apps: London Bus Times Public Toilet Finder Currency Exchange BBC Weather Google Maps Hidden London Street Museum Blue Plaques Trip Advisor and street hawkers. It was probably first used as a cant a language designed to disguise what was being said from passers-by. Today, cockney rhyming slang phrases have entered the British lexicon, and many are still used in London and indeed all around Britain. Here are a few examples: Baked Bean Bees & honey Butcher s Hook Rabbit & Pork Dog & Bone Ball & Chalk Bubble Bath China Plate Frog & Toad Mork & Mindy Oxford Scholar Trouble & Strife Fat Boy Slim Queen Money Look Talk Phone Walk Laugh Mate (Buddy) Road Windy Dollar Wife Gym Wi-Fi: is common in cafes and restaurants, connection speeds can vary. 30

31 Phone: In London, telephone numbers generally come in the form: To understand this, +44 is the country code for England, 020 is the city or area code for London, followed by a 8-digit local number. Country code: +44 Area code London: (0)20 Emergency services: 999 Ambulance: 999 US Embassy: +44(0) NHS non-emergency hot line: 111 (this number is for nonemergency enquiries, you will get through to a highly trained doctor and they will advise you with your issue.) Opening hours: The usual opening hours for most supermarkets throughout London are from 9:00am to 6:30pm, Monday to Saturday. Shops such as Tesco and other big companies will be open on a Sunday but closing around 5:00pm. Smaller businesses may not be open at all. Restaurant opening times in London are extremely varied, in more residential areas restaurant kitchens may close earlier such as 10.00pm. However in central London you can find restaurants that are open 24 hours. The best thing to do is research the area that you are going to eat in. Restaurants are open from 12.00pm to 10.00pm. On Saturdays from 12.00pm to 11.00pm and Sunday/Public Holidays from 12.00pm to 10.00pm. Bank opening times: banks are open Monday to Friday 9.30am- 4.30pm and Saturday 9.30am pm. Public toilets: restaurants, pubs, fast food chains and cafes all have toilets, however many will require you to purchases something such as a coffee in order to use the toilet. You can also use the app that is listed below to find a public toilet, some of these may require you to pay a couple of pounds to use and some are free. 31
