2 About Mundy Junior School Mundy Junior School is a junior school in Heanor, Derbyshire. There are 189 children on roll aged 7-11, 13.23% of which are non-white British, with families from a range of socio-economic groups, 26% of which are entitled to FSM. We currently have 35 children on the SEN register, including 4 children with Statements of Special Needs. Three of the children on the SEN register have diagnosed mobility issues, possible need of wheelchair on excursions. The majority of children live within walking distance of the school, predominately within three postcodes. The school gates, on Lockton Avenue open at 7.15am and close at 9.00am, by which time all the children are expected to be school. School ends at 3.30pm and the gates are closed by 3.50pm. Lockton Avenue is a residential street, also with a sharp corner. Although both Lockton avenue and Coppice road are relatively quiet of traffic outside the home time hour, and they are heavily populated by parked cars of both residents and parents picking up and dropping, contributing to poor lines of vision. We have a crossing lady who crosses both our children and Coppice children, 8.30am-9am and 3.15pm 3.45pm The footprint of the school is quite large, with one large playground, and a large file and is located in an area of high-density housing. There is sufficient parking for current staff, as well as 40 slots for scooters and 5 bike slots. 3 Why do we have a travel plan? As well as academic success we are committed to encouraging a positive attitude regarding environmental and health issues. Our school travel plan encompasses both these issues, promoting physical exercise which is beneficial to health as well as reducing car dependency which is beneficial to the environment. Through reducing congestion around our new school we hope to build good relationships with our local community and help make the roads surrounding our school safer. Through education and increased opportunities to reduce reliance on the car we believe that individuals will benefit from improved health and wellbeing and that our children will be safer on the roads. The wider implications of the school travel plan aim to fulfil national and local objectives, namely; 1. the encouragement of other forms of transport, rather than the car, for school journeys; 2. Creating safer journeys to school. 3. To encourage a healthy attitude and walking culture amongst the school community that will lead to a healthier life style and the associated environmental benefits. 4. To foster children's and parents understanding of travel and road safety issues, to make them aware of the issues, particularly with regard to the school journey. 5. To encourage children to take what they have learnt about travel choices and road safety issues on the school journey and adopt them in other areas of their lives, now and in the future. 5 Location of Mundy Junior School, Lockton Avenue, Heanor Consultation with the school and community In developing our Travel Plan, Mundy Junior School has consulted with a wide body of interested parties. Children were involved in the Hands Up survey in the classroom. Parents and children were involved with the School Travel Plan Questionnaire survey in January Consultations have taken place with the Head teacher and the Senior Leadership Team for their views on the Travel Plan and ways of making the pupils journeys safer. The Governors discussed the contents of the Travel Plan as part of their Premises Committee responsibilities, and at full Governing Body meeting. Travel Plan. Discussions were initiated with the Site Services Officer and the School Business and the School. The School Council were approached for their views on road safety around school. The overall plan has been discussed at a staff meeting. 5

11 Please Travel Smart on your journey to school to help reduce traffic congestion and to improve safety for our children. If you arrive by car, please DO NOT park near or on the yellow zig zag lines or in front of the car park gate. Please park away from school and walk from there. If you can please walk to school. Walking is a great way to keep fit and it helps to keep the school gates free of cars. This makes it safer for children, it s also good for our neighbours and the environment. It also helps to reduce congestion and the chances of accidents around the school. If you arrive by car, why not share your journey to help reduce the number of cars on the road and save on fuel costs too? If scooting to school saves a car journey why not think about travelling this way? We have secure scooter storage. Look out for people and vehicles on your journey. Please do not ride your bike or scooter around the playground as we don t want anyone to get knocked over! There are bus routes around school. = BUS STOP For more information see: Crown copyright and database rights
