Hartwick, III Summer 2018 Calendar of Events The Dauphin County Commissioners and the Dauphin County Parks and Recreation Department have an exciting line-up of music festivals, free movies, and more for your summer enjoyment! For nature enthusiasts, the summer is a great time to enjoy the outdoors at Dauphin County s parks. Fort Hunter Park offers a taste of history as well as great vistas for a picnic or a stroll along the river. Art In The Wild lines the trail at. Catch a Saturday Morning Walk at Dauphin County s newest park - Detweiler Park! Summer Camp Program: Native Americans Along the Susquehanna June August 10:00 am 2:00 pm Fort Hunter Park $5 per student Summer camp and day center students in grades 2 6 explore how Native Americans in the Harrisburg area used their environment to solve the basic human needs: food, shelter, water, clothing and basic equipment/tools. Students will furnish a wigwam, identify Native American objects and participate in activities such as a throwing stick. After learning about the Native Americans, a guided tour of Fort Hunter Mansion invites students into to learn about Mansion life in the 1800s, comparing the owner s life to the lives of the Native Americans. Groups must be 15 or more students, pre-registration is required. Call to schedule a workshop. Art In The Wild Exhibit Now through October 31 Dawn until Dusk Come visit Art In The Wild, an intriguing exhibit of outdoor environmental art along the park s wandering trails and water pools. Using natural materials, regional artists have constructed large and small

Work it Out at Fort Hunter Saturday, June 2 10:00 am Fort Hunter Park, donations accepted Enjoy the beautiful scenery along the Susquehanna River as participants walk around the park and stop along the way to do some easy stretches and yoga poses. Wear comfortable walking shoes and clothing. Brownie Scout Workshop: Wonderful Water Saturdays, June 2 and 9 10:00 am 1:30 pm $10 per scout Imagine being a drop of water travelling from clouds to creek to animals to stream and to ocean! Scouts will become biologists as they collect and examine stream life. Scouts will get wet, so please wear water shoes or old sneakers and pack a towel and change of clothes. Bring lunch, water and a snack. Register at Volunteer Work Day Saturday, June 9 10:00 am 1:00 pm Take this opportunity to work outside and help Wildwood s continued park and habitat enhancement projects. Tools and work gloves provided. Registration is required for groups of six or more at The work day is cancelled if it is raining. Flower Walk: Peak of Blooming Sunday, June 10 10:30 am 12:00 pm Join Volunteer Cara Martinez-Williams to view fragrant water lilies, yarrow, white beardtongue, blue-eyed grass and common milkweed. Learn how these and other flowers were named and some of their uses by early settlers and Native Americans. Some trees may be bearing fruit. Meet at the North Lot. Registration is not required. Bird Walk: Nesting Season Wednesday, June 13 7:30 am 9:30 am This bird walk with volunteers Rick and Peg Price will begin at the Olweine Nature Center to explore Wildwood Way and the North Boardwalk, where we will look for ducklings and nesting orioles and redstarts. Meet at the nature center parking lot. Registration is not required. Stress Relief Walk Wednesday, June 13

Registration is not required. *Dauphin County employees should sign in to receive 15 Wellness Rewards points.* A Young Woman s Style: Late Victorian Fashion 1880 s 1900 s Mid-June December during Mansion hours Fort Hunter Mansion admission charged During the 1880 s s, Helen Reily was a young adult wearing the latest fashions. Several samples from her wardrobe will be on display. View walking dresses as well as day and afternoon dresses. These many outfits that were part of Helen s wardrobe, live on as her legacy to her sense of fashion and good taste. Classics & Convertibles at the Mansion Sunday, June 17 12:00 pm - 4:30 pm Fort Hunter Mansion On the front lawn of the Mansion, view classic convertibles and vintage cars while you tour Fort Hunter Mansion or stroll the grounds as classic oldies music plays in the background. Learn how these flowers were named and some of their early and even modern day uses. Registration is not required. Common ragweed, responsible for a great deal of allergic response, will be identified along the trail. Registration is not required. Wednesday, August 22 10:00 am 10:45 am Join a Dauphin County Library System Librarian and Wildwood Environmental Educator for a fun story ses-

Stories, songs, rhymes, play, and a take-home craft will introduce Wildwood critters and the joy of books and language to youngsters. Space is limited. Campers will use binoculars on nature walks, explore wetland, forest and meadow habitats, learn how we can all reduce, reuse and recycle, and enjoy live animal demonstrations. Register at Farm to River Sunday, August 26 Fort Hunter Mansion 6:00 pm 8:00 pm $125 Patron $60 Dinner Guest This annual fundraising event includes a new, fun and localized twist - a farm-to-river experience. On the front lawn of the Fort Hunter Mansion, as the warm summer day winds down, attendees will enjoy locally-sourced, homemade dinner offerings, along with local brews, wines and live acoustic music. Patrons will be hosted prior to the dinner, at 5 pm, to enjoy hor d oeuvres and signature drinks on the West Lawn, overlooking the river. For tickets and additional information, visit Sunday Evening Bird Walk Sunday, September 2 5:30 pm 7:30 pm Join volunteers Rick and Peggy Price for this early September evening walk. The walk will begin at the South Parking Lot, where we will look for shorebirds, and continue on the Towpath Trail. Registration is not required Summer Day Camps at Space is limited; Register at Wildwood Way Day Camp (ages 6-8) Mon., June 25 - Fri., June 29 9:00 am 3:00 pm $135 per person Children ages 6 to 8 are invited to come and explore the nature and wildlife at. They will learn FULL: Junior Naturalist Day Camp (ages 9-11) Mon., July 9 - Fri., July 13 9:00 am 3:00 pm $135 per person Campers ages 9 to 11 will learn a variety of naturalist and outdoor skills. They will discover what it means to be a naturalist and create a watercolor journal to use throughout the week. Day campers will canoe on Wildwood Lake and explore a stream to look for aquatic insects. They will also investigate different habitats while hiking around the park, dissect owl pellets, use binoculars, and spend a morning fishing. FULL: Outdoor Week (ages 12-14) Mon., July 16 - Fri., July 20 9:00 am 3:00 pm $135 per person Get into the wild! Outdoor enthusiasts ages 12 to 14 will uncover the natural world while learning skills important to survival in the outdoors. They will build debris huts, complete an orienteering course, and practice the skill of knot tying. Campers will dive into water by learning about water pollution and prevention, fishing, and canoeing down the Susquehanna River! FULL: JumpStart Photography for Younger Kids (ages 7-12) Mon., July 23 - Fri. July 27 9:00 am 11:30 am Does your child have an interest in photography? In this newly designed camp, students will be loaned a digital camera and explore the operation and functions of the camera, lighting, and composition. Each lesson contains an introduction to a project with photography tips tailored to the assignment. The student will learn a single concept and photograph the subject in-the-field or in a classroom setting. This will give your child a great base for jumping into projects where they will actually be practicing their photography and to reinforce the concepts and encourage creativity. Teens will have an opportunity to gain knowledge in nature and wildlife photography, beginning with the basics of picture-taking using digital SLR cameras. Each student will be loaned a digital SLR camera and explore lens choices, lighting, and composition of photography. The student will learn about photography in a fun and fact-filled environment. Space is limited, so register today at org. Join us for the Dauphin County Jazz & Wine Festival at beautiful Fort Hunter Park as we welcome national, regional and local recording artists. The Central Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz will host Friday night s entertainment! Browse among some of Central Pennsylvania s top wineries and a fine gathering of wine, craft and food vendors. Gallery Walk Exhibit Sunday, September 9 11:00 am 4:00 pm Olewine Nature Center One of twenty plus local art display stops for the annual gallery walk hosted by the Art Association of Harrisburg. Stop by the Olewine Nature Center and enjoy awardwinning photographs from the Friends of Wildwood Photo Contest. Tour the Art In The Wild trailside exhibits or the indoor video by CASA, plus wildlife photographs by local artists. Refreshments served. Join the Friends of Fort Hunter The Friends of Fort Hunter generously support improvements to Fort Hunter Mansion and Park for everyone s enjoyment. Through financial donations, volunteer work and loyal patronage, the Friends of Fort Hunter help make the Park s preservation possible. Friends enjoy free admission to Mansion tours, a 10% discount in the museum shop, a $5 discount to Dauphin County Music & Wine concerts, free admission to the John Harris Mansion, the quarterly Chronicler newsletter, advance notice of upcoming events and an invitation to the annual fundraising dinner.
