1 Expository Determine the Each Paragraph The teacher should complete an for the selection before developing these activities. Then main ideas may be clustered to develop a meaningful summary. Outline Clustering Main Idea Menu Clustering and Summary Select ONE activity per reading selection to match the correct level of difficulty for students. The levels of difficulty of activities vary. In general, the following is in order from teacher guided to student independent practice. Activity 1: Picture Map As teacher reads each paragraph, students select a picture that identifies the main idea. Fisher Reyna Education 2011

2 Activity 2: Outline Scramble 8 Main ideas are arranged in alphabetical order. is read and students write the paragraph number by the correct main idea. This may be a. teacher guided with individual student recording their response. b. teacher guided with main ideas projected with teacher marking the correct response from the group. c. partners working together as they take turns reading and recording correct paragraph number Activity 3: Matching Activity Give each student one main idea. Teacher reads the reading selection one paragraph at a time. Student identifies when they have the matching main idea. Fisher Reyna Education 2011

3 Activity 4: Matching Main Idea to Students may work individually or with a partner. Students read the selection and match cut- apart main ideas to paragraphs in the selection. Activity 5: Matching Main Idea to Cut- Apart Teacher cuts selection in parts by titles, subtitles, photos, and paragraphs. Teacher shows the titles and photos as a pre- reading activity. Then students match cut- apart paragraphs to the correct cut- apart main ideas. Fisher Reyna Education 2011

5 Cut - Apart Outline Activity 8: Match Cut- Apart to Outline Teacher cuts apart the selection by titles, subtitles, photos, and paragraphs. Students organize parts to make a selection that matches the outline. Activity 9: Organize the Cut- Apart Teacher cuts apart the selection by titles, subtitles, photos, and paragraphs. Students organize parts to make a selection. Students use their knowledge of introductions, conclusions, transitions, logical order, etc. to organize the selection. 7 Explore Animals August 2002 Feet and Toes who needs those? 1 Different animals have different kinds of feet. They have big feet, little feet, hooves, and paws. Each kind of foot is specially made to do a different kind of job. Every animal is born with the kind of foot that is best for where it lives and what it needs to do. An armadillo has very strong claws on its feet. It uses the front claws to dig for food. An armadillo moves around slowly while looking for roots and insects. But it can move with amazing speed and dig with all four feet when it needs a tunnel to hide in. 5 Walking Swimming 2 3 A camel is an animal that often carries things across the desert. It has big, flat feet with two toes that can spread far apart. These toes keep the camel from falling on the loose sand. The bottoms of from being burned by the hot desert sand. A polar bear lives where it is very cold. It has paws that are big and wide. They keep the polar bear from falling in the soft snow. The bottoms of its paws are covered with fur. This keeps the the cold snow. The fur also keeps the bear from falling when it walks on slick ice. Climbing and Digging A duck has three long toes with skin between them. These are called webbed feet. When a duck goes into the water to swim, its toes spread out wide. These toes help push the duck through the water and make swimming look easy. A seal also uses its feet to help it Each flipper has five toes with skin over and between them. When a seal is swimming, it uses its flippers to move or propel itself through the water. When it is on land, it uses its flippers to walk. These are just a few examples of how feet allow animals to walk, climb, dig, and swim. These animals have feet that are just right for them. If you think about it, your feet are just right for you, too! A mountain goat has small feet called hooves. These hooves have two toes that can spread around rocks. This allows the mountain goat to hold on to the rocks tightly. Hooves also have hard coverings to keep the rocks from hurting them. Most mountain goats can climb steep mountains with no trouble at all.
