Walking for Health: Scheme page guide Contents Adding a new walk... 2 Editing existing walks listings... 6 Managing existing walks listings:... 7 Your Scheme s home page:... 8 Walk Programmes:
Adding a new walk To add a new walk to your scheme page (which will also show up on the map as a pin): Log in Go to the Menu and select Scheme Admin to get to your scheme page. Then go to the Walks tab and select + Add Walk. You ll be led to the Create Walks page: Create a walk name that will make sense to an external audience. Add a Walk description to be informative and create interest. Use this space to tell walkers more about this walk: where it is, what they can expect from the walk, the start time, approximate duration and level of the walk. When writing, please remember our Walking for Health brand guidelines. Walking for Health walks are social activities that are enjoyable, relaxed and fun. They aim to reach out to people who aren t particularly active and inspire them to make a change. Try to write to inspire them do so. If you need to make the text box bigger, you can do this by clicking on and dragging the small arrow in the bottom right corner. 2
If you d like your text to be underlined, bold or italic etc. you can use the tool bar above the text box. We think it s best if you use the Calibri font, and keep the font at a size twelve. To create a link to another website you can click on the link symbol to type in your website URL. Here is a good example of a walk description: Walk features: We have created some picture icons to help walkers to have a clear idea of what the walk offers. You can add these to your page by clicking on the boxes underneath the walk features header. 3
Making your walk public: The third party website check box controls whether the walk can appear on the Ramblers and Macmillan websites. To make your walk appear as a public listing (available for all to see) please make sure that the public box has a tick in it To make a walk disappear from your page, but still be kept in the back end of the website (e.g. when a seasonal walk isn t on your programme, but you d like to add it again later in the year) you can un-tick the box. When you d like the walk to appear active again, you just need to click on it to reactivate! Walk start point address: The walk start point address is really important. This is so that walkers know exactly where to meet and it also helps us to run accurate reports about where all our walks are, and who is taking part in them. The postcode is what we need the most, because when you add this, it allows the website to plot a location pin on the map, showing users where exactly the walk begins. 4
When the postcode isn t correct, the map becomes blank. Walks with no postcode: We understand that not all walk start points have postcodes in this case we recommend that you add the nearest postcode in the text box, and then plot the exact location onto the map. You can do this by using your mouse to zoom in to your desired location on the map, once you have found you location, click to drop the location pin. If you have placed the location pin in the wrong area, you just need to click on your new location to move the pin there. Walk duration: - This is a mandatory field. Walks can sometimes vary in duration so this figure should be the average expected walking time. - Any significant variation in duration should be reflected by creating an 'option', which you can do on the walk page. - All Walking for Health walks need to be between 10 and 90 minutes in duration. Any walks longer than 90 minutes are progression walks and are not part of Walking for Health. You can record and report on these walks, but they will not be displayed on the public map, walk calendar or scheme walks listings. To save your walk: - Click save. Now, your walk should be active. 5
Editing existing walks listings If you need to edit a walk; to add a more detailed description, or simply fix an error, you can do this by clicking on Walks : - Log in - Go to the Menu and select Scheme Admin - Then go to the Walks page Here you ll see a list of all of the walks in your scheme. To open a walk you can either click on the walk name, or on the blue open button. Once you ve opened the walk, click on edit walk If you d like more information on what to include in your walk description please read the summary in Adding Walks. 6
Managing existing walks listings: To easily manage your walks in a simple list, you ll need to click on walks : Log in - Go to Menu Scheme Admin - Go to the Walks tab Here you ll see a clear list of all of the walks in your scheme. You can switch between Public Walks (walks that are visible on your page) And Private Walks (walks that are entered into the scheme, but aren t visible on the website) by using the drop down menu in the top left corner. You can add a walk by clicking on the add walk button at the top of the list. And, you can view the walk by either clicking on the walk name, or on the blue (open) button. (And then you can edit the walk as you wish.) To remove your walk from the website permanently, you can click on the Remove button. We do not advise you do this, as the information will be gone forever. It s better to make your walk private by clicking on edit walk and choosing to make your walk private in the walk features section by using this box: By doing this, you can always come back to the walk, if you wish to use the information again. 7
Your Scheme s home page: To edit your scheme page: - Log in - Go to Menu Scheme Admin - On the Edit scheme tab it will open an editable page called Basic Scheme info Your scheme page is usually the first point of communication between you and walkers, new and old. It needs to contain all of the relevant information about your scheme and walks, presented in a friendly, straightforward way. Remember that too little information about your walks could discourage new walkers. And all information should be clearly presented. The page needs to include: - A brief summary about your group who you are, what type of walks you provide (e.g. are they in parks, woodland, or in urban areas?) - Where you re situated (e.g. in the city centre, across the region, in a specific part of the county) - How regular are your walks? Daily, weekly, monthly etc. - What level walks do you provide? Here s a great example of a scheme page: 8
Again, you can use the arrow in the bottom right hand corner of the text box to enlarge the text box. You can add links to your main page by clicking on the hyperlink button (it looks like a chain): Adding links is a good idea if your scheme or walking group has an independent website, or if you work alongside another group and feel that that page is also relevant. We encourage you to list your walks on the Scheme front page, otherwise it won t be obvious to walkers which walks you provide, and when, as not everybody will use the map! We advise you to hyperlink the Walk page, to the walk description on your scheme page for easy access. You can Edit and write your walk list in the More about the scheme section. - Log in - Edit scheme page - More about the scheme Again, please try to provide as much information as you can about the walks the description doesn t have to be very long. Basic Walk information should include: - The name of the walk - The location address, meeting point and nearest postcode. - What day the walk is on, and if the walk is weekly, monthly etc. - The start time and duration - The level of the walk 1, 2, 3 Please try to keep this section updated regularly; this includes removing walks from public view that you no longer wish to continue! Events are always a welcome social occasion and they re a great way to build a community. If you have any events that you d like to include, like an annual summer bash, or a special Christmas stroll you re welcome to include these in the events section. If you have a group Facebook page, or other relevant social media pages, you can add them in the boxes. 9
Walk Programmes: Walk programmes are really helpful, especially if your walks have varied routes, or if you have a bimonthly time table they re easy to download and print, so walkers can use them for reference. We have some programme templates available to download here. If you have a walk programme or an image that you d like to add to the site, you can upload it to your front page by using the Images and docs tab. - Menu Scheme admin - Edit Scheme page - Basic Scheme info - Images and docs - Document upload/file upload You can find this under the documents header. Click on Choose file, and then once you have the right file, click upload. It s absolutely vital that your contact information is on the scheme page. Otherwise there is no clear way for walkers to know how to contact you. To add your contact details to the page, click on the contact tab, or follow: - Menu Scheme Admin - Edit Scheme page - Basic Scheme info - Contacts 10
