3 San Angelo Independent School District 1. General A. PURPOSE Each of our schools Volunteer Adult Crossing Guards work for and answer directly to the schools they work for. The main purpose of this program is to assist the City of San Angelo s efforts, as well as our schools in creating a safe environment for our children to walk, bicycle, or even ride to school and home again. B. PROGRAM Your volunteer efforts are greatly appreciated, and we want to make sure that you are performing your duties within the guidelines and expectations of all concerned. The Safety and Security Department of the SAISD is always available to assist or train any persons willing to volunteer as Adult Crossing Guards. The Safety & Security Department is responsible for making sure all volunteers accepting these duties are made aware of the responsibilities and expectations of this position. Our office is always willing to assist with situations or concerns you might have during the performance of your duties. 2. How to Work a Crossing A. GENERAL RULES i. All bicycles, skateboards, rollerblades, scooters, or any other type of rolling/riding device will be walked across the crosswalk. ii. If children are acting rowdy or inappropriate, hold them back until you have or they have come under control. iii. If cars are proceeding through the crosswalk while occupied by you as the crossing guard or you and the children, attempt to write down the license plate number, brief description, and color of the vehicle. Turn this information into the schools principal, who in turn will contact this office for resulting action. iv. If you or any of the children are harassed, cussed, or threatened, follow the same procedures as stated above (iii) and turn the information into the schools principal. v. When arriving at school, park your car in a location that won t create a problem at your crossing or another. vi. Never direct traffic, unless special circumstances demand it and approval has been received by the schools principal. Accidents could result, leaving you alone responsible. Try not to develop personal physical relationships with the students. Being too friendly causes gossip and false accusations towards our volunteers. While we understand that most children are hard to avoid, we do ask that you attempt this to alleviate any future problems.

Do not allow yourself to become distracted either by friends or radios. We appreciate your volunteerism, but also need your full attention on ensuring the safe environment of the children. ix. Do not offer or give rides to any of the students (with the exception of your children or grandchildren), even after your duty is over. Please make sure that the schools office is aware that you will be giving children or grandchildren rides after school. x. When entering traffic to perform your duties, make sure your have all necessary equipment, and are using it according to expectations. xi. Do not leave your duty station during expected hours without special permission from office staff. xii. No traffic is allowed to cross through the crosswalk while you or students are in it. 3. Crosswalk Locations A. CROSSING WITH NO TRAFFIC LIGHT i. Most of the areas that you as volunteers will be working will be areas with no form of traffic control lights. ii. Group the children, and instruct them to wait off the curb until you give further instructions. iii. Wait for noticeable spacing in the traffic before attempting to stop traffic. iv. Hold up the Stop Sign, and blow the Whistle to make sure you have all oncoming cars attention. v. When recognizing that vehicles are slowing to a manageable speed or are stopped, proceed out to the middle of the crosswalk. vi. When all cars have stopped, instruct the students to cross in an orderly fashion. vii. Once all the students have cleared the opposite curb, you may leave your position in the middle of the crosswalk and either follow the students or return to the opposite side. viii. Do not allow traffic to move until you and the students have cleared the crossing. ix. Use eye contact and hold your hand up to show the drivers that they must wait.

5 x. If traffic is unusually heavy at your location, emphasize you Whistle blowing, and guarantee that traffic is stopped before entering the street. You might have to double your efforts with certain drivers. 4. Other Locations At some point in time you might be allowed or asked to work another location with additional Traffic Safety features. The locations and their additional responsibilities will be in addition to those discussed in Section 3. A. INTERSECTION WITH SIGNAL LIGHT AND WALK LIGHT i. Utilize the push (activation) button and wait for signal change, prior to approaching traffic. B. INTERSECTION WITH SIGNAL AND NO WALK LIGHT i. Work with the signal light (cross with the light in your favor). ii. Make sure all traffic is accounted for. Pat particular attention to those trying to turn in your direction. C. INTERSECTION WITH STOP SIGNS i. Work with the traffic stopping in the direction you are crossing. 5. Dress Code While you are volunteering your time and efforts to assist our schools and children with a very important responsibility, you are an extension of the SAISD. As such, we will both be scrutinized for allowing inappropriate dress by any of our staff. We would ask that you dress appropriately not only for this consideration, but also for the weather and temperatures you will be working in. For best advice, speak with your schools principal if you have any concerns about what is expected. 6. Equipment Each school, as well as the Safety & Security Department will do everything possible to make sure you have the proper equipment required to perform your duties in a safe manner. If supplied, it is expected that equipment will be worn or utilized as expected. 7. Emergency Procedures Should an accident or emergency occur involving you or one of the students using the crosswalk, the responsible guard will: i. Determine the extent of the injury as best you can. ii. If the injury is of a minor nature, and the injured can be moved, remove them from potential dangers of the oncoming traffic

6 iii. If the injury is of a major nature, or you can not make the determination, do not move the injured. iv. Call 911, and then call for assistance from school staff, other guards, or motorists. v. Make the injured as comfortable as possible, and make sure they are secured and protected from oncoming traffic. vi. An Accident Report will be completed at your first available opportunity. vii. If the crossing guard was the injured person, and doctor s care is required, a release will be needed to allow the volunteer to come back to duty.
