4 About Santa Clara County DEMOGRAPHICS 1.78 million residents (As of 2010) Most populated county in the Bay Area; sixth most populated in California Minority populations are the majority 35% White 32% Asian/Pacific Islander 27% Hispanic 2% African-American

5 About Santa Clara County 15 different cities and towns in Santa Clara County; all operating under their own jurisdiction 32 school districts; 403 schools; 265,543 students In general, County commuters drive more frequently, carpool and take transit less often; and walk less than commuters in the great San Francisco Bay Area High walkability in downtowns and medium to low walkability in residential neighborhoods 64% of residents live within half-mile of a public elementary school Overweight and obesity among children in Santa Clara County: 32.9% (State of California: 38%)

6 About Traffic Safe Communities Network (TSCN) Community collaborative established in 1997 to prevent traffic related injuries and deaths Chaired by County Health Officer and member of the County Board of Supervisors Multi-disciplinary membership

7 Our Non-infrastructure SRTS Program FUNDING Initial funding ( ) by California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the California Office of Traffic Safety Currently funded ( ) by VTA (Valley Transportation Authority), our local congestion management agency, and MTC (Metropolitan Transportation Commission) for VERBS (Vehicle Emissions Reductions Based at Schools) Additional New Funding ( ) from Caltrans
