4 The Travel Theme The theme began in 2008 Over 1600 schools have been awarded their Green Flag Almost 500 are participating in Travel Officers working on the theme Funded by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport Supported by the National Transport Authority Partners with Local Authorities

5 Why is Green-Schools Travel needed? 800,000 Children travel to and from home each day on the school journey 40% % % % % % 1991

6 To encourage students, parents and teachers to walk, cycle, scoot, use public transport or carpool instead of using the private car on the school run. What are we trying to do?

24 Seven Steps Step 1 Step One: Green-Schools Committee Choose your committee in September Mini class elections Pupils write letters Teachers choose Draw names from a hat Hold regular committee meetings Record the minutes of each meeting Give pupils roles within the committee e.g. head of the GS committee, secretary, website officer, notice board officer, announcements officer

25 Seven Steps Step 2 Step Two: Environmental Review Carrying out an environmental review helps schools to identify their current environmental impact and highlight places where improvements can be made. Areas to review: Travel habits Traffic around the school Transport infrastructure Distance pupils live from the school Examples of workshops offered to help assess these areas; mapping, traffic speed workshop, traffic surveys, walkability/cycleability audit
