(2 comments) Parking Comments Bring back Custom House Square parking. Make Custom House Square more functional for events. Handicap parking considerations More short-term parking with more short-term meters. Overnight resident parking sticker for downtown residents. This should be all day. (2 comments) Parking for business owners/employees that don t have parking lots. Greasy Luck is an amazing addition to the city, but parking downtown has been a nightmare since they opened. See on map for proposed resident parking, thanks! Andy Burns owns this empty lot. Make into resident parking, please! (Figure 2) Business Owner Concerns Loading zone in front of Wing s Court (2 comments) Can trucks and buses make these turns? Delivery trucks double park on Purchase (Figure 3) Good hub for servicing local businesses on south side of Purchase St. (Figure 3) Truck turning radius at intersections Will business owners be required to spruce up their storefronts? Will property owners be required to upgrade service lines (domestic/fire service, separate roof drains, etc.)? Customers need sidewalks! Cycling Comments Bike path coordination with Zagster, which is currently in the works with the City. (Three comments) Bus Access Comments Will there be space for bus shelters? (2 comments) (Figure 2) Will buses be able to make the necessary turns with the bump outs? Pedestrian Safety Concerns Easier navigation for the disabled Pedestrian safety and education via signage (2 comments) Many new BCC students are crossing the street dangerously and are unfamiliar with area at Union and Pleasant intersection. (Figure 2) Currently large bushes must be removed. Drivers cannot see pedestrians at Union and Pleasant intersection (Figure 2) WHALE Co-Create: Awning design & sewer (Figure 2) Corner of Acushnet: If possible a light with a walk signal at this intersection. We have a community based day program on this corner Kate from Work Inc. (Figure 2) Turn on red accidents and pedestrian visibility, especially at Purchase Street. Pedestrian safety at Purchase Street, turning east. Pleat are hit regularly and a diagonal crossing with a pedestrian only light cycle could solve this. There is currently no pedestrian right-of-way on the light cycle. (Figure 3) Speed bumps. Pedestrians just cross wherever and whenever they want with no regard to traffic signal phasing or crosswalk location People turning right tend to hit pedestrians Accessibility issues exist for those in wheelchairs Could a flasher be put in at Acushnet and Union for pedestrians? Pedestrian/Streetscape Design Comments Innovative lighting (2 comments) Incorporate festival lighting in the MassWorks project. Pedestrian friendly. Be creative and hold a design competition for bike rack design. Challenge designers to use reclaimed recycled products to make benches via a design competition. Beautiful awnings protect from sun, colorful, sail cloth since we are a port city. There is an opportunity for artists to overlay specificity through a design competition. There is sign pollution (quantity) and quality on the recent North or Mill Street is overbearing. Will this happen here? An alternative to the yellow center line to slow cars down. See Kissimee and Fall River. Combine paving materials such as slate, granite sets, rounded cobbles, brick into new pedestrian infrastructure. These materials are classic New Bedford Vernacular. Space for New Bedford-related sculptures? Underground Infrastructure Comments What about other non-city utilities such as cable, etc.? Opportunities for T-1 fiber optic cable? Coordinate/tie-in with new construction (Figure 1) Corner of Acushnet: Largely populated and needs water and sewer. Kate from Work Inc. (Figure 2) Can the proposed plans/designs please be put up on the websites? Parking on Keystone site (temporary?) Identify full infrastructure for all properties fronting Union Street prior to closing design phase. What if buildings don t have separated sewer, etc.? Calico and Gatlin s Framing: Concerned about customer/pedestrian access to my storefront. With the street be completely closed down at an point between Purchase and Acushnet? (2 comments) (Figure 2) Hippo and Calico: Please be quick. The street is fine to me, but street closures will close us down. (2 comments) (Figure 2) Will businesses be accessible during construction? This memorandum represents our understanding of the events which transpired and the actions which were taken. If they do not conform to a recipient s understanding, prompt written notice must be communicated to the writer. If no corrections or objections are made, this memorandum will be relied upon as a factual interpretation of this meeting. Other Design Comments Make New Bedford a model of sustainability by adding solar panels and micro turbines. Let s make Union Street net-zero! (Figure 1) How to make above ground improvements at 7 th and 8 th Streets? One bin for all trash (paper, glass, compost, cans). Look at precedents: Prince Edward Island, North Atlantic Islands collective, etc. (Figure 1) Beacon Technology Take advantage of project to make out of downtown. My comments concern street cleaning. Need to implement alternative south side/north side overnight parking so street, Street cleaner does not clean the middle of the street! 7 th Street gateway to Abolition Park. Coordinate with project. (Figure 1) (2 comments) Potential Interpretive Center for 7 th Street Abolitionist Row. Idea is to design an historic district with the New Bedford Historic Society, Abolitionist Garden (in design phase), Friend s Meetinghouse (Figure 4) Construction Comments Yea, great investment in infrastructure. Separate storm and sewer for all properties. Several buildings have sitting water on rooves. We need a good storm water discharge system.
