1 Smb Brief History Smb is dnce nd musicl genre originting in Brzil, with roots from Afric vi the West Africn slve trde nd Africn religious trditions, prticulrly Angol nd the Congo. Introduced in 97, the Smb wsn't dopted by Brzil s bllroom dnce until 930. In Brzil, Smb is mostly dnced solo, nd remins especilly populr during celebrtions of the Brzilin Crnivl in Rio de Jneiro. The festive mood of the dnce is responsible for its continued populrity. Smb is considered to be one of the most populr Brzilin culturl expressions, being is n icon of Brzilin ntionl identity. Smb Ntionl Dy is celebrted on December every yer! Smb hs very specific rhythm, highlighted by chrcteristic Brzilin musicl instruments. To chieve the true chrcter of the Smb, dncer must give it hppy, flirttious nd exubernt interprettion. Chrcteristics nd Technique Tempo: 80-5 bets per minute :, 34 Time signture: /4 Principl chrcteristics of the Smb re the rpid steps tken on qurter of bet nd the pronounced rocking motion nd swy of the dnce. The bsic footwork of the Smb includes fst, three-step weight chnges with slight knee lift, led with lternting feet. The bsic rhythm is quick, quick, slow. The mjor ction of Smb, the Smb Bounce gives the dnce its unique look nd feel. It is gentle, rhythmic ction felt through the knees nd nkles. This ction should pper effortless nd crefree nd should never be exggerted. The Smb Bounce is quite difficult to mster, but relly dds to the overll chrcter of the Smb. It is produced by the flexing nd strightening of the knees nd nkles, the supporting leg tking most of the weight. In ddition to bounce ction, mny Smb figures lso require pelvic tic ction, which is difficult to ccomplish, but without it the dnce loses much of its effect. The pelvis is tilted forwrd in n upwrd direction on bet, tilted bckwrds or digonlly bckwrds on step (bet ), nd returned to centre on step 3 (bet ). Timing There re mny different bet vlues in Smb, the min Smb Bsic Movement is timed. This consists of 3 steps in forwrd/bckwrd direction nd is split into of bet on step, of bet on step, nd full bet on step. The bounce ction tkes of bet of music for ech flexing & strightening movement nd is timed &&. Therefore, the overll timing for the bsic step including the bounce ction is &&. In other steps such s Volts, which re sequence of quick steps, the timing is syncopted further to 34, which is split into bet on steps,,3,4 nd bet on steps. Begin with proud elegnt posture, ll weight on LF (hip to left) feet slightly prt, knees soft. Arms should be held nturlly by your side, elbows slightly lifted in bsic Ltin position.
