2 Regional Council Recommendation On November 24 th, Regional Council provided Resolution stating: That Peel Public Health be directed to make a presentation to each local area municipal Council to discuss joint health and built environment initiatives.

3 The way we design our communities influences key risk factors for chronic disease, such as: Physical activity Air quality Road safety Social capital Stress Food Heat and shade Why Does It Matter?

4 Why Does It Matter? A recent study found that for every 5% improvement in the walkability of a neighbourhood, adults who reside there tend to walk and cycle 32% more, have a lower body mass index and enjoy reduced pollution from automobiles. 1 Bolton 1 Lawrence D. 5 Why Does It Matter in Caledon? 49% of Caledon residents aged 18+ are overweight/obese* 63.5% of Bolton residents aged 18+ are overweight/obese* (highest rate in Peel) Age and sex standardized rate of overweight/obesity* based on StatsCan and CCHS combined data (2003/08). 6 Our Recent Accomplishments Support for on going and future initiatives by the local area municipalities. Developed tools to support healthy community development such as the Healthy Development Index and Health Background Study. Collaboration with Regional partners for on going and future initiatives including policy development, transportation related studies (eg. Active Transportation Plan) and development planning. Submission of proposed changes to the Provincial Policy Statement and the Ministry of Transportation s Transit Supportive Guidelines to highlight link between health and the built environment.

7 Peel Healthy Development Index Output: Index consisting of seven built environment elements: Density Proximity to services and transit Land use mix Street connectivity Road network and sidewalk characteristics Parking Aesthetics and human scale Elements are further broken down into measures, many of which are quantitative

8 Some of Caledon s Recent Accomplishments Amendments to the Town Official Plan to emphasize links between health and planning. Green Development Program providing development charge discounts for new green commercial and industrial buildings. Walkability focus for the Caledon East Community Improvement Plan Study. Healthy communities focus for the Mayfield West Phase II Secondary Plan. Development of policy for drive throughs. Public Health and the Built Environment
