1 Miami Health District Streetscapes, Gateways, and Signage Basis of Design Report Study Miami Partnership Meeting July 21, 2008 Gannett Fleming EDAW The Corradino Group Sponsored by the Miami Partnership: University of Miami and City of Miami

2 Health District Basis of Design Report Project Purpose Complete a study of streetscape, gateway, and signage improvements designed to make the Health District safer, friendlier, more attractive, and easier to navigate for pedestrians and drivers. Product will be design concepts that can serve as the basis for construction drawings: a Basis of Design Report (BODR).

3 Health District BODR Objectives Reinforce the Health District identity Improve the pedestrian experience Improve the physical appearance Provide a coherent wayfinding system

4 BODR Process Complete research, site visits, analysis Obtain stakeholder input on issues and objectives Develop design options/alternatives Obtain stakeholder input on alternatives Finalize preferred alternatives Prepare Final Basis of Design Report

6 General Design Considerations Traditional Planning Objectives: Encourage mixed-use, higher density, pedestrian and transit-oriented development Transportation Improvements: Build on planned improvements like the circulator, pedestrian capacity enhancement Public Health and the Built Environment: Improve health by encouraging walking and exercise Sustainability: Apply green design and sustainability standards

7 Streetscapes: Definition Right of way modifications to improve function, appearance, safety, and comfort for pedestrians and drivers.

9 Streetscape: Benefits of Urban Street Trees No longer an extra or discretionary element For an installation cost of $ , each tree returns over $90,000 in lifetime benefits
