1 Collage a composition of often disparate elements collected and altered to complete a vision Collage, from the French coller, to glue, entered the art terminology lexicon in 1912 when it was coined by both Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. Certainly the techniques of collage go back to the invention of paper in 200 BC but most examples begin in 10 th century Japan when calligraphers began applying their poems on paper to scrolls, soon followed by the application of gold leaf to illuminated manuscripts in medieval Europe. With Picasso and Braque collage went beyond a technique; it became a concept, which revolutionized cubism, taking it from analytic to synthetic, building up a form from small sections instead of breaking it down. Initially considered a lesser art form, collage soon revolutionized modern art. It became an approach to making art. For me, Parade the Circle, is an example of kinetic collage, an assemblage of human beings interacting with each other, augmented by sets and costumes. Through the use of an optional theme, the artistic creations that make up Parade, share exposure to a common idea, which whether incorporated or not, allows these creative impulses to compose an idiosyncratic narrative PARADE GUIDELINES The parade theme helps to unify parade entries, especially the major ensembles. Groups are not required to follow it, but may find it a helpful guide in designing their own entries. The following guidelines must be followed: Everyone must be in costume, including parents and staff accompanying children. All entries must be handmade and people powered. Motorized vehicles (other than wheelchairs) and live animals (other than working animals) are not permitted. No written words are allowed. Entries should not propagandize a particular political or religious belief. Entries and costumes must be non-commercial. No identifiable logos are allowed. No T-shirts with words, registered trademarks, logos, or cartoon characters may be worn. Uniforms representing organized teams, troops, school or civic organizations may not be worn. No distribution of leaflets or flyers during the parade or along the parade route. Children under 15 must be accompanied by someone older. All parade participants participate at their own risk. 2 Parade the Circle June 10, 2107 PARADE WORKSHOPS at CMA Parade tent Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays May 5 June 9, 2017 Parade Tent For five weeks prior to parade day, participants can create their own costumes, masks, and giant puppets at CMA s public workshops with the assistance from professional Parade artists. ALL workshops held in Parade tent (11111 East Blvd., Cleveland OH former CIA parking lot, corner of East Blvd. and Wade Oval Dr.) BASIC WORKSHOPS Make masks, costumes, and giant puppets using papier-mâché, cloth, and recycled materials with assistance from Parade artists. Workshop pass required. Fridays, May 5 - June 9, 6:00-9:00 Saturdays and Sundays, May 6 - June 4, 1:30-4:30 STILT WORKSHOPS Stilt Weekend Try walking on stilts. Free to all, priority to passholders and outreach groups; children must be 10 years or older. Paraders wishing to purchase stilts may order them during stilt weekend (fee approximately $75-$90.) Saturday and Sunday, May 13 and 14, 1:30-4:30 Stilt-dancing for Paraders Learn stilt safety and dancing on stilts. Included in workshop pass. Saturdays and Sundays, May 20 - June 4, 1:30-4:30 FEES FOR PUBLIC WORKSHOPS A workshop pass entitles you to unlimited attendance at all workshops, assistance from professional Parade artists, and some basic materials. Pass: individuals $75; families and groups $200 up to 4 people, $50 each additional person. Workshops are open to all ages; children under 15 must register and attend with someone older. Registration fees include parade entry. Group rates and scholarship assistance are available. REGISTRATION Register in the Parade tent for workshops or the parade during any listed workshop. To be listed in the printed program, registration and program form must be completed by Sunday, May 21. 3 SCHOOLS & COMMUNITY GROUPS 1. Follow required parade guidelines listed on separate sheet. The sheet also describes the parade theme. Groups are not required to follow the theme, but may find it helpful. 2. Attend leadership training workshops, if interested (one to three persons per organization per session). These free workshops provide hands on experience with Parade art technique and are strongly recommended for groups new to parade participation. Workshops begin March 7 at the Parade studio. Movement session held at Parade tent on June Optional consultation with Robin VanLear, Artistic Director, Parade the Circle, or Debbie Apple-Presser, Parade Outreach Coordinator. Recommended for new groups. Special consultations at leadership training. 4. To be listed in printed program register and complete program forms by Sunday, May Register by Monday, June 5 for parade wristbands and privileges. Registrations received after May 21 will not be listed in the Parade program. 6. Parade fees are set as low as possible. If these rates present a hardship to your group, please call before you begin work to discuss special arrangements. 7. Send one representative to required group leader meeting Tuesday, June 6, 7:00 p.m. at the Parade tent. CREATE YOUR ENSEMBLE OPTION 1: PUBLIC WORKSHOPS at Cleveland Museum of Art Parade tent A. Register your organization for public workshops held in the Parade tent. Basic workshops: Fridays, May 5 - June 9, 6:00-9:00 Saturdays, May 6 - June 3, 1:30-4:30 Sundays, May 7 - June 4, 1:30-4:30 The Parade tent is also available for you to work on your own outside of workshop hours. B. Public workshops pass: individuals $75; families and groups $200 up to 4 people, $50 each additional person. These fees cover those working in the basic workshop, and include parade registration. Stilt purchases for stilt-dancing workshops require additional fees. Some basic parade materials are included in the fee. C. Typical costs for materials not included in the basic workshop fee are approximately $5-10 per person. Large structures may cost more. Please inquire. D. Charge per person for members of your group not participating in workshops but parade only: $5/child and student and $10/adult. OPTION 2: ON YOUR OWN A. Create Parade ensemble at your site, utilizing your staff or volunteers. B.
