1 Los Angeles Bicycle & Pedestrian Count Prepared by the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition based on material from Ryan Snyder Associates and Alta Planning + Design

3 At the Location Please arrive at the location 15 minutes before the count period so you can lock your bike, get situated, fill out the rest of the forms, etc. Once you ve arrived: Find a safe location to conduct the count. Place yourself on one side of the street or the other at your screenline. Use SAFETY as your primary guide. Consider the location that provides you with the best view of pedestrians and bicyclists traveling in both directions. Screenlines with two volunteers: Locations with high pedestrian or bicycle volumes have been assigned two volunteers to help with the count. Stand on opposite ends of your screenline and count bicyclists and pedestrians only on your side of the street.

19 Conducting the Count How to Count It is best to arrive at the site 15 minutes before the count period so you can park, lock your bike, get situated, etc.. Once you ve arrived: Fill out the Cover Sheet showing exactly where you are counting. Circle the direction that people are travelling (north-south-eastwest). Mark Y at Do you have a partner? on top of your cover page if you have a partner counting the other side of the street. 20 Conducting the Count How to Count Be sure to count in 15-minute intervals. Use one count sheet page for each 15- minute interval You will have completed 8 pages at the end of your 2-hour shift. Please start your count and end your count promptly at the top of the hour.
21 Conducting the Count How to Count Bicyclists Count bicyclists as they cross the screenline. Use simple tally marks in groups of five. Count the bicyclists in the box that corresponds to the direction they are traveling when they cross the screenline. If you are only counting on one side of the street because you have a partner, you will only count riders in the other direction if they are riding the wrong way on your side of the street. At the end of each 15-minute period, total your tally marks in the space provided. Bicyclists Count bicyclists when they cross this imaginary line Bikes - Right to Left 12
22 Conducting the Count How to Count Bicyclists For bicyclists, please also notate if: They are riding the wrong way on the street They are riding on the sidewalk They are riding without a helmet They are a female cyclist Make additional marks to count other characteristics Female Sidewalk Riding Wrong Way Riding Other: Other:
23 Conducting the Count How to Count Bicyclists Make additional marks to count other characteristics Female Sidewalk Riding Wrong Way Riding Other: No Helmet Other: For bicyclists, please also notate if: They are riding the wrong way on the street They are riding on the sidewalk They are riding without a helmet They are a female cyclist Example: A female bicyclist is riding the wrong way and has no helmet. You would put a mark in Female, Wrong Way Riding, AND No Helmet. Note: There is no wrong direction on the sidewalk. Only mark Sidewalk Riding OR Wrong Way Riding for any one bicyclist. Note: Mark Wrong Way Riders in the direction they are traveling, not the side of the street they are riding on.
24 Conducting the Count How to Count Pedestrians Count pedestrians as they cross the screenline. Use simple tally marks in groups of five. Count the pedestrians in the box that corresponds to the direction they are traveling when they cross the screenline. If you are only counting on one side of the street because you have a partner, you will count pedestrians in both directions if they are walking on your side of the street. A parent riding with a child in a seat or trailer? Count them as 2 bicyclists. A person pushing another person in a wheelchair or stroller? Count them as 2 pedestrians. A person walking while carrying a child? Count them as 2 pedestrians. Pedestrians Count pedestrians when they cross this imaginary line Pedestrians - Right to Left Pedestrians - Left to Right Make additional marks to count other characteristics Wheelchair/Special Needs Skateboard/Scooter/Skates Child Other: Other: Anyone traveling on something other than a bicycle is a pedestrian. If the person is using a wheelchair or skateboard, mark them as a pedestrian and also mark the correct box. If someone is walking their bike, count them as a pedestrian.
27 Conducting the Count How to Count Multiple pass situation. A multiple pass is when someone walks (or rides) across your screenline, then time goes by (say 5 or 10 minutes) and then they come through again. In this case, you count them again. If time goes by and they walk (or ride) by a third time, count them again. If you see the same person 3 or more times, please notate that.
28 Conducting the Count How to Count Transit Users Some of your screenlines will be near bus stops. Your screenline should not be located between a bus stop and an intersection. If you are close to a bus stop, please mark it on your Cover Sheet. If people walk across your screen line to a bus stop, count them. If people get off a bus and then walk towards the intersection and do not cross your screenline, do not count them. 31 Conducting the Count How to Count Final Points Be Accurate! Remember that the goal is to be accurate, not to turn in high numbers. Your numbers may be low at your location. That s okay.
32 Return your forms When you have completed all of your count shifts, please return all 9 of your count forms (1 Cover Sheet and 8 Count Sheets) Turn in your forms at one of our drop-off locations, or at LACBC headquarters during normal business hours Monday-Friday, 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. Forms must be turned in by Friday 10/02 to be eligible for raffle.
