16 ..IN THE U.S. Population: 319 million Cell phones: 327 million (103%) Approximately 90% of Americans have a cell phone 2.25 trillion texts/sms/mms sent in 2014 up from 180 billion in 2012

17 ADDICTION Persistent compulsive use known by the user to be harmful and/or has negative consequences

18 CURRENT LAWS Currently, 14 states, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands prohibit all drivers from using hand held cell phones while driving All are primary enforcement laws

19 CURRENT LAWS Washington was the first state to pass a texting ban in 2007 Currently, 46 states, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands ban texting for all drivers (all but 5 are primary enforcement)

20 MINNESOTA Texting ban for all drivers (primary offense) All cell phone ban for learner or intermediate licensees Misdemeanor up to 30 days in jail and/or $500 fine

36 WHAT ARE THE RISKS? Doubles your risk of a rear end collision Increases you probability of missing traffic signals and running red lights Cell phone users while driving are 4 5 times more likely to be in injury causing traffic crashes Texting drivers are 23 times more likely to crash
