Use of public transit can result in decreased greenhouse gas emissions as well as substantial incidental physical activity from walking or biking to and from transit access points. The California Air Resources Board estimates that between 7,3 and 11, premature deaths in California may be due to fine air particle pollution alone. 4 OC Healthy Communities Forum Educational Attainment The proportion of residents 2 years of age and older who have a high school diploma or its equivalent as reported through the US Census Bureau s American Community Survey. Educational attainment significantly affects lifetime earnings. High school graduates have lower death rates from all causes and are less likely to suffer from heart disease, motor vehicle death, homicide, high cholesterol, and other health issues. They may also be less likely to engage in behaviors harmful to their health. In national surveillance by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, those without a high school diploma are over three times more likely to smoke than those with a bachelor s degree. Additionally, among non-elderly adults, those without a high school diploma are over 1. times more likely to lack health insurance than those with a diploma.
