1 A M B A S S A D O R S G U I D E with Timon and Pumbaa: Safety Smart is an initiative aimed at improving the awareness and understanding of children ages 4-14 in safety and in managing themselves and their surroundings as safely as possible by conscious action, not chance. Toward that end, UL produces multimedia public service announcements; arranges for Safety Smart Ambassador visits for children to learn from professional safety experts; hosts field trips to its laboratories, where children see safety engineers at work and participate in their own hands-on safety experiments; regularly advocates on emerging safety issues, especially regarding products that may pose a risk to consumers; and supports the development of its youth safety education programs. Through its efforts, Safety Smart cultivates awareness, provides opportunities for children to learn and practice safe, healthy and environmentally friendly behaviors, and helps children learn to make more informed choices today and in the future. In an effort to help keep children safe and healthy around the world, Underwriters Laboratories and The Walt Disney Company have joined hands to create Safety Smart, a global program designed to encourage and empower children to practice safe, healthy and environmentally responsible behavior. As community, industry, and government leaders, parents and grandparents, individuals and good corporate citizens, we are all safety smart ambassadors responsible for helping our children make the right choices and decisions. Thank you for joining us in working for a safer world by sharing Safety Smart with children everywhere. Safety Smart Ambassador Learning about public health, safety and environmental stewardship is easier and more fun than ever! As a Safety Smart Ambassador, you will be sharing reassuring, clear and confidence-building messages to help children live a better life. Safety Smart engages and excites children in fun, creative and interactive ways, and can be presented in the classroom, at camp, scouting or youth group meetings, and even at community events basically anywhere children are gathered. Safety Smart Ambassadors help empower children to be safety advocates safety scientists safety smart. Approach The Safety Smart guiding principle is that unintentional injuries are avoidable and preventable through Safety Smart choices. Safety Smart focuses on the causes of injury and safeguarding against the injury. For example, the Safety Smart choice of not playing with matches will avoid the start of a fire; using hand rails will avoid a fall; washing your hands will avoid the spreading of germs; and wearing a life jacket will avoid drowning. By teaching these concepts, we begin to build a consciousness and a knowledge, which children draw upon to make better lifesustaining choices. DO YOUR PART! BE SAFETY SMART! 2 Deployment In addition to the 12-minute animation, has also been adapted into nine 2-minute shorts, called interstitials. Each interstitial focuses on a specific mode of transportation: amusement park rides and attractions, bikes, boats, buses, cars, motor scooters, pedestrians, planes, and trains. These innovative interstitials capture and hold children s attention while conveying life-critical messages via an engaging and entertaining platform. You can help raise awareness and inspire action by encouraging your community leaders including your children s school transportation managers, scout leaders working on a transportation badge, parent teacher organizations, or the local transportation enforcement office to utilize these interstitials. Program Outline Children ages 4 through 8 join Timon and Pumbaa as they learn about the four Safety Smart points of safe travel: slow down, pay attention, use proper equipment, and don t distract. While exploring many modes of transportation including bus, car, motor scooter, bike, personal watercraft, plane, boat, train, and foot children will learn how to apply the four Safety Smart points of travel to everyday transportation, regardless of their global location. *ONLY HAVE A LIMITED AMOUNT OF TIME WITH THE CHILDREN? OR HOPING TO FOCUS ON A SPECIFIC MODE OF TRANSPORTATION? TURN TO PAGE 7 OF THIS GUIDE FOR A SUGGESTED QUICK-START GUIDE. Duration Activity Details/Suggestions 2 minutes Who am I? Introduce yourself to the children and explain how you happen to be there (e.g., your child s class, scouting group, etc.). Let the children know how to address you (e.g., Miss Jill, Mr. Smith, etc.). 2 minutes Why am I here? To help the children learn about the importance of being Safety Smart when they are traveling by vehicle or by foot. Ask the children if they know Timon and Pumbaa from The Lion King, and would they like to learn how the two friends stay safe while traveling? 8 minutes What are we going to learn? Ask the children what they know about safe travel. Here are some questions to get you started: 1. How did you get here today? Did you walk? Take a bus? Come in a car? Was there another way? 2. What does the word transportation mean? Can you provide any examples of transportation? 3. Have you ever heard of the word pedestrian? What do you think it means? 4. You arrived here safely today. Can you think of things you did on the way here that kept you safe? What were those things? Answers: Transportation is a system or an action that moves people or goods from one place to another. A pedestrian is someone who is walking along a road or street in a developed area. 12 minutes Safety Smart: On the Go Gather children together to watch Timon and Pumbaa share valuable, kid-friendly lessons about staying safe while traveling. Reinforce and extend a specific lesson or all the lessons with these nine 2-minute shorts. Encourage discussion and participation by engaging the children about what they just learned. Here are some questions and activities to get started: 1. What did you learn? 2. What did you find the most interesting? 3. Can you name the four Safety Smart points of safe travel? Answer: Take your time and slow down, pay attention to the environment around you, use proper safety equipment, and don t distract drivers, attendants, other individuals or yourself. 4. How can you keep yourself safe while traveling by bicycle or motor scooter? By foot? By car or bus? By plane or train? By boat? Answer: On bicycles and motor scooters, practice slowing down and wearing the proper safety equipment. Proper safety equipment includes helmets, padding, and reflective clothing. And remember not to text while operating a vehicle you don t want to distract yourself! Practice slowing down and looking both ways before crossing the street, and always cross at a crosswalk with an adult or a crossing guard. Remember to watch for and follow the directions of the walk and don t walk lights. Paying attention to your surroundings will help you stay safe. And remember not to text while walking you don t want to distract yourself! It is not Safety Smart to distract the driver of a car or a bus, so practice finding a seat right away, putting on your seat belt, and talking or listening to music low enough so the driver can focus on getting you safely to your destination. Always make sure to read all posted signs and listen to all safety announcements. Practice slowing down and waiting for other passengers to exit a plane or a train (or a bus) before you get on. (continued) Remember to wear a life jacket when on a personal watercraft or while riding in a boat! 5. On your way home today, which of the four Safety Smart points of safe travel will you use? Why? 6. Safety Theater Learning Opportunity: It s important for children to understand that the safety precautions they are learning can be used anywhere in the world, and for any mode of transportation. To help demonstrate this concept (and to have lots of fun), engage the children in a role-playing activity. Arrange the children into pairs. Give each pair a completed Timon puppet and a completed Pumbaa puppet from the Puppet Safety Theater worksheets (found on pages 23 and 24). Choose one child to play the part of Timon, and another to play the part of Pumbaa. Ask the child playing the part of Timon to choose a place where he or she would like to visit (the child may need prompts like Egypt, New York, Australia, Russia, etc.); ask the child playing the part of Pumbaa to choose a mode of transportation (e.g., plane, bicycle, car, boat, etc.). Now encourage the children to role-play a scene in which Pumbaa helps Timon remember one or two of the four Safety Smart points of safe travel, and how Timon can apply them to Pumbaa s chosen mode of transportation. Here are two scenarios to get you started: Timon and Pumbaa are on a bus heading to Disneyland, and Timon decides to start dancing and singing in the aisles. The Bus Driver is having a hard time focusing on the road, because Timon is so distracting. Pumbaa has to remind Timon to take a seat and stop distracting the driver so they can all arrive safely at their destination. Timon and Pumbaa are about to board a boat out to sea. But before the Boat Captain will let the two friends board, Timon must put on the proper safety equipment. Timon thinks he needs a helmet, but Pumbaa reminds Timon that he needs a life jacket whenever he is traveling on the water. After a few minutes, have the children switch roles. Then have them repeat the role-playing exercise using a new location and a new mode of transportation. 7. Get Em Moving Learning Opportunity! Have the children stand up and form a circle. Invite a volunteer to stand in the middle of the circle. Give the volunteer a ball (or any classroom item that is small enough to hold with two hands and that is not sharp or dangerous an eraser, a marker, etc.). Have the volunteer create a sentence using any of the travel safety lessons he or she has learned (e.g., I wear my seat belt when I travel in the car, or I look both ways before I cross the street, etc.). Once the first child has created a travel safety sentence, have him or her toss the ball to a second child. Once the second child catches the ball, have the second child switch places with the first child. Continue the exercise until all children have had a chance to create their own travel safety sentence. DO YOUR PART! BE SAFETY SMART! To get started, here are a few ideas: Transportation Safety Tips (page 10) Group: arrange the children into pairs and have them work together to complete the worksheet. Once completed, review the answers together, encouraging children to explain the correct answers. Is It Safety Smart? (page 11) Group: have the children complete the worksheet individually or in pairs, and then project a blank worksheet onto the wall. Ask children to describe what is happening in each picture and whether or not it is Safety Smart. Safety Equipment Check (page 12) Group: arrange the children into pairs and have them work together to complete the worksheet. Then project the worksheet onto a wall and invite volunteers to describe how the proper safety equipment is being used in each picture. On a Motorcycle (page 13) Group: project the activity onto the wall, and invite volunteers to explain how the motorcycle riders could make themselves and their passengers Safety Smart. Safety Match (page 14) Individual: have the children complete the worksheet. Then project the worksheet onto a wall and invite volunteers to help you match each mode of transportation to its corresponding safety behavior. Safety Compass (page 15) Game: arrange children into pairs and give each pair a Safety Compass. Have one child be the spinner and the other child be the traveler. The spinner spins the compass; once the spinner lands on a Safety Smart point, the traveler names the point and then acts out a travel safety behavior that corresponds to the Safety Smart point. Then have the children switch roles and repeat the exercise. World Safety Symbols/World Safety Words (pages 18 and 19) Game: project the World Safety Symbols and their corresponding World Safety Words onto a wall. Review the symbols and their corresponding words as a group and then arrange the children into groups of 4-5. Give each group a set of cut-out symbols and cut-out words, and have them work together to match the symbols to their corresponding words. Which Way Will They Go? (page 20) Group: arrange the children into pairs and have them complete the worksheet. Then project a blank worksheet onto the wall and invite volunteers to help fill-in the correct answers. Take-Home Activity: Safety Smart Checklist (page 16) Ambassador Leave-Behind Activity: Transportation Safety Poll ( page 21) 10 minutes Sing-Along with Timon and Pumbaa Help the children remember the travel safety behaviors by leading them in a sing-along. (page 22) On the DVD scene selection menu, choose the Sing-Along option. Encourage the children to sing along with the characters. 7 SUGGESTED QUICK-START GUIDE The activities in this Ambassador s Guide are designed to reinforce and extend the transportation safety learning found in the program. Depending on how much time you have or if you want to focus on a specific mode of transportation you may wish to select some or all of the activities. If you have one class period Watch the 12-minute Safety Smart : DVD, ask the children the first five questions from the What did you learn? activity on pages 3 and 4, and have all of the children participate in a group Sing-Along. Award a Safety Smart Certificate to the class/group and send each child home with a copy of the Safety Smart Checklist. If you have two class periods Add the Safety Theater Learning Opportunity and/or the Get Em Moving Learning Opportunity from the What did you learn? activity on pages 3 and 4. Complete the Transportation Safety Tips and the Is It Safety Smart worksheets as a group. If you want to focus on amusement park rides and attractions safety Watch the 2-minute Amusement Park Rides and Attractions interstitial. Then ask children what they learned about amusement park rides and attractions safety. Invite one volunteer to hold a completed Timon puppet and invite a second volunteer to hold a completed Pumbaa puppet (see instructions on the Puppet Safety Theater worksheets found on pages 23 and 24.) Have the volunteers role-play that they are standing in line for a ride at an amusement park. While in line, they should act out reading all of the posted signs, and listening for safety announcements (ask a few more volunteers to shout out announcements). Once they are seated on the ride, they should act out using the proper safety equipment (e.g., fastening seat belts), and keeping their arms and hands inside of the ride at all times. If the volunteers need help remembering the travel safety behaviors for amusement parks, encourage the other children to help them recall the lessons they learned in the video. If you want to focus on bicycle safety Watch the 2-minute Bicycles interstitial. Then ask children what they learned about bicycle safety. Project the Safety Equipment Check worksheet (found on page 12) onto a wall. Point to the bottom picture and explain that Timon is on his bicycle without his safety equipment. Have the children help you draw the proper safety equipment on him. Then have the children come up with a few travel safety reminders that Pumbaa is about to share with Timon (e.g., Remember to slow down, Don t distract yourself, Make sure to look both ways before crossing the street, etc.). Now that Timon is wearing his proper bicycle safety equipment, point to the two pictures at the top of the worksheet and see if children can explain how the proper safety equipment is being used in each picture. If you want to focus on boat safety Watch the 2-minute Boats interstitial. Then ask children what they learned about boat safety. Distribute the Coloring Page (found on page 25) to the children and have them use crayons or markers to color the page. Then have them answer the question at the bottom of the page. DO YOUR PART! If you have access to a life jacket, show it to the children and show them how to fasten it properly. It is also a good idea to show them where the size is located on the inside of the life jacket, and that it is very important to wear the correct size. If you want to focus on bus safety Watch the 2-minute Buses interstitial. Then ask children what they learned about bus safety. Invite a volunteer to play the part of the Bus Driver; have the rest of the children be the Passengers. Have the children discuss and act out safe bus travel behaviors (e.g., allow bus passengers to exit before getting on the bus, find a seat, hold on to a handrail or safety strap, wear a seat belt when available, and don t distract the driver). If you want to focus on car safety Watch the 2-minute Cars interstitial. Then ask children what they learned about car safety. Project the Is It Safety Smart worksheet (found on page 11) onto a wall. Point to the image of the children fighting in the back of the car and ask the children to determine whether or not the children s behavior is Safety Smart. Point to the image of Timon and Pumbaa wearing seat belts and ask the children to determine whether or not the two friends are being Safety Smart. Point to the image of the man driving and texting, and ask the children to determine whether or not the man s behavior is Safety Smart. If you want to focus on motor scooter safety Watch the 2-minute Motor Scooters interstitial. Then ask children what they learned about motor scooter safety. Arrange the children into pairs and distribute the On a Motorcycle worksheet (found on page 13). You may need to explain that the travel safety behaviors for motor scooters and motorcycles are the same. Have the children work together to complete the worksheet, and then project the worksheet onto a wall and encourage children to share their answers with the group. If you want to focus on pedestrian safety Watch the 2-minute Pedestrians interstitial. Then ask children what they learned about pedestrian safety. Project the Is It Safety Smart worksheet (found on page 11) onto a wall. Point to the image of the children crossing the street next to the crossing guard, and ask the children to determine whether or not the children s behavior is Safety Smart. Invite a volunteer to play the part of the Flight Attendant; have the rest of the children be the Passengers. Have the Flight Attendant make safety announcements (e.g., Please take your seats, Please fasten your seat belts, Please turn off all music and electronics so you can hear all safety announcements, Please do not distract your fellow passengers, etc.); have the Passengers act out safe plane travel behaviors (e.g., quickly taking a seat, listening to the Flight Attendant, buckling their seat belts, reading all posted signs, not distracting the Flight Attendant, etc.). If you want to focus on train safety Watch the 2-minute Trains interstitial. Then ask children what they learned about train safety. Divide the class in half and instruct one half to stand on the left side of the room, and the other half to stand on the right side of the room. The children on the right will be the Train Passengers and the children on the left will be the New Passengers. Draw an imaginary line between the two sets of passengers (or use masking tape to create a line on the floor); this line will be the Train Platform. Have the New Passengers practice stepping away from the platform as the Train Passengers arrive, and then have the New Passengers practice waiting until all of the Train Passengers have exited the train before any of the New Passengers get on the train; have the Train Passengers practice exiting the train in an orderly manner. Optional: Have the New Passengers act out holding onto safety straps and finding seats before their train departs. Have the two groups switch roles and repeat the exercise. DO YOUR PART!
