1 Why invest in the 1 Street S.W. Corridor? This project is an investment in the Beltline Community and Calgary s economy. It is anticipated that The City s investment along this corridor will help with the continued revitalization of the neighbourhood by attracting private developments, new businesses and more residents to the area. City Council accelerated the capital funding for this project as part of The City s economic stimulus efforts. The $6.2M in capital funding that has been allocated to this project is an investment in the local economy and is anticipated to help create and sustain local jobs during the current economic downturn. The improvements will create a safer, more comfortable and inviting environment for the 10,000+ pedestrians and transit riders that travel the corridor each day. Begins at the 10 Avenue S.W. CPR underpass and extends south to meet 17 Avenue S.W. The look and feel of the streetscape established in 2003 between 12 and 14 Avenues will be extended along the full length of the corridor.

2 What improvements are being done as part of this project? Streetscape improvements Centre median and banner pageantry program (managed by Victoria Park Business Revitalization Zone) New and improved pedestrian and roadway LED lighting Increased number and distribution of bike racks More on-street parking spaces Tree plantings Updated waste receptacles Updated benches Pedestrian Improvements Crosswalk curb extensions Prominent and well-marked cross-walks (eg. zebra striping) Pedestrian scaled lighting Furniture zone and unobstructed sidewalks (wider sidewalks built up to adjacent property faces)

3 Timeline First public realm and streetscape improvements constructed between Avenue S.W. and 14 Avenue S.W., which included new sidewalks, pedestrian lighting, trees, street furniture and curb extensions Construction began on 1 Street S.W. CPR Underpass Improvement project, which included new sidewalks, continuous and brighter November lighting and public artwork City Council advanced funding for the project with the goal of stimulating the economy Summer 2016 Fall 2017 Construction to extend the look and feel of the streetscape established in 2003 from 10 Avenue S.W. to 17 Avenue S.W. 4 Construction Planning The City is committed to working with adjacent businesses and property owners to minimize disruptions and impacts as much as possible. As part of the construction, sidewalks in front of buildings will be re-built. The City and Contractor will develop temporary access plans to minimize impacts to building access. To assist us in developing temporary access plans, the project team would like to learn more about adjacent businesses and residents. Please complete a questionnaire to provide input on your requirements (when you receive deliveries, core business hours, planned events, etc.) updated portion of the corridor between 12 and 14 Avenue S.W.

5 Construction impacts To construct the enhancements, there will need to be sidewalk and traffic lane closures and detours. A construction schedule and staging plan will be developed by The City s General Contractor once the construction tender is awarded later this summer. During construction, all detours will be clearly marked and The City will ensure every effort is made to minimize disruptions to adjacent businesses and property owners. Streetscape Rendering Two-lane roadway design A highlight of improvements include: Two 3.3m driving lanes Decorative pedestrian and roadway LED lighting Centre median and banner pageantry program Tree plantings New sidewalks Before (looking south on 10 Ave. and 1 St. S.W.) 7 Investing in 1 Street S.W. 15 Avenue S.W. Streetscape Rendering Single-lane roadway design A highlight of improvements include: Single 3.3m driving lane and 2.1m parking lane Wider sidewalks and curb extensions at crosswalks Decorative pedestrian and roadway LED lighting Unobstructed pedestrian zone Furniture zone with new benches, more bike racks and waste receptacles. New tree plantings Before (looking north at 15 Ave. and 1 St. S.W.) After

8 Transit Design The location and design of some bus stops will be modified through this project to improve Transit customer service and safety. One significant improvement is the development of new bus stops at the intersection of 1 Street S.W. and 13 Avenue S.W. Existing bus zones located within the parking lanes at 12 Avenue S.W. (southbound) and 14 Avenue S.W. (northbound) will be removed and relocated to 13 Avenue S.W. The new stops will be located on a newly constructed bus zone sidewalk extension where the sidewalk is widened into the parking lane and extends along the full length of the bus. Shelters and benches will be installed in this new extension to provide amenities for customers. Benefits of this new design include: Improved customer waiting space and amenities: shelters will now be located at front of bus zone Improved operational and customer safety: buses will pull up parallel to the curb every time, meaning people can get on/off bus safely from the curb every time. Improved pedestrian environment: the sidewalk is no longer a shared walking/waiting space. Transit riders will wait on the bus zone sidewalk extensions and pedestrians will have unobstructed use of the sidewalk. Minimized conflict with parking: returns parking to the corridor and removes the existing issue of vehicles parking in the bus zones.
