ASU Homecoming Parade 2012 Parade Manual This manual was created by the Arizona State University Programming and Activities Board to provide homecoming parade participants with the information needed to have a safe, successful, and enjoyable parade experience. All of the information listed below is subject to change.

2012 Homecoming Parade Information On behalf of the ASU Programming and Activities Board, we would like to thank you for your interest in making homecoming 2012 great! Below, you will find all of the information needed to have a successful and safe parade entry. Please be sure to read through this Parade Manual entirely before you begin the registration process. Application for participation in the 2012 Parade will begin on September 7 th, 2012 and will be due no later than October 12 th, 2012 at 5:00 pm. The parade registration form must be filled out online at: The theme for the 2012 Homecoming Parade is A Golden Decade. If selected to participate, you will be notified of your registration time and parade number by PAB Homecoming Staff no later than October 15 th Although Parade Applications are due on October 12 th, they will be processed as they are received. Make sure to get your registration in early so you can ensure your participation in this event! The time of the parade will depend upon the start time of the football game on Saturday, October 27, PAB will notify all parade participants of the official start time as soon as it is determined. Staging of the parade will occur from 5pm to 7pm on Friday, October 26 th in Lot 59N located off of Rio Salado Parkway and Packard Drive. Once we begin getting our floats in order, we will process to the actual parade route where they will stay overnight. Overnight security will be provided overnight to ensure the safety of your vehicle and float. For safety and security of all, the vehicle that is pulling your float will be required to stay attached to your float overnight. If your float is not in its place by 7pm,

you will not be included in the parade, so please be there as early as possible. You will be given a specific arrival time between 5pm and 7pm for staging. This will be shared with you when you receive your parade number of October 15 th. Failure to arrive during your designated time may result in not being allowed to participate in the parade. All floats need to be completed prior to staging. No float will be allowed to change or add to it once it is in place. All groups are responsible for picking up the trash in and around their float before and after they leave their location. Any groups leaving a large amount of trash behind may result in not being allowed to participate in future years. The parade route begins at the intersection of University Drive and S McAllister Ave continuing west down University Drive to Mill Ave.

2012 Parade Rules and Regulations Floats Floats will be judged on their ability to fit the theme (Sun Devil Homecoming: A Golden Decade ). They should be creative, festive, and convey the spirit of ASU. All float designs MUST be approved by the homecoming department of PAB. The float description/sketch is a vital part of the registration process and should be taken seriously. Based on your design plan, we will decide whether or not to include your entry in the parade. If you choose to use the pitchfork please do so with good taste. Make sure to have the registration packet turned in by October 12 th at 5pm. Make sure that your organization s name is presented clearly on your float. The maximum measurements allowed are: 14 (height), 15 (width), 15 (trailer length NOT including truck). The maximum weight of your float is to NOT exceed 6,000 lbs. Please make sure that your float is within these guidelines. There cannot be more than 10 people riding on your float because of safety regulations. If you want to have more people involved in your entry, you may have them walk beside or behind your float. Make sure that all of the decorations are securely attached to the float and that there are no fire-hazards. You are not allowed to shoot or throw any items into the crowd. This includes, but is not limited to: candy, shirts, promotional items, and water. Electronics may be used with the approval of the homecoming department. Please make sure that wires are safely secured so that no one will trip over them. Also, please note that ONLY battery operated electronics may be used; generators are prohibited. Live animals are prohibited in the parade. Please be sure you read and adhere to the Parade Code of Conduct. Walking/ Marching Participants All Walking/Marching Participants must have a professional grade banner or sign that clearly identifies the participating group.

It is important to keep up with the pace of the parade and to follow the instructions of the PAB Staff and Volunteers. You are not allowed to throw any items into the crowd. This includes, but is not limited to: Candy, shirts, promotional items, and water. Live animals are prohibited in the parade. Please be sure to read and adhere to the Parade Code of Conduct Homecoming Parade Code of Conduct The following information is provided to assist you in participating in a safe and problem-free parade. Your cooperation in following these guidelines is essential to the success of this year s homecoming parade. Failure to follow these guidelines could hinder your participation in the 2013 Homecoming parade. The Arizona State University Student Code of Conduct must be met by everyone participating in the parade. Parade entries must not be offensive, illegal, or negatively reflect Arizona State University. This includes the conduct of those walking and riding in the parade. Tossing or shooting any items during the parade is prohibited. This includes but is not limited to candy, promotion items, squirt guns, streamers, etc or anything else deemed inappropriate by Homecoming Parade Staff. Please represent your organization well, this includes listening to and cooperating with the parade staff at all times during the event. Alcohol and smoking are prohibited. PAB will ask you to leave if you appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Any questions, comment, or concerns regarding the information in this manual can be ed to Hcparade@asu.edu. We will do our best to answer all questions in a timely manner. Thank you again for your interest in this historic ASU event!

2012 Homecoming Float Competition All ASU affiliated groups and organizations with float entries will be automatically entered in the ASU Homecoming Float Competition. Here is all of the information regarding the competition. Only entries that meet all of the requirements mentioned in this manual will be eligible to win a prize. A first, second, and third place will be awarded in each of the two categories (Greek and General Competition). Trophies will be awarded in the Greek category and vouchers for organization t-shirts will be given out for the Non-Greek category. Floats will be judged on based on their creativity, quality, ability to fit the theme, and portrayal of the spirit of ASU homecoming. In addition to the standard scoring, we will be awarding bonus points to entrants that use green materials to build and decorate their floats. The Parade Competition Score Sheet can be found at the end of this manual. It s a good idea to look it over and keep the scoring categories in mind if you wish to do well in the competition.

Decorating Tips! Below you will find a list of items recommended for use on your float design! Please make note that this year; in order to follow ASU s sustainable methods, you will earn extra points in the float competition by using sustainable items in the design of your float. Float Decorations Ideas: Blankets Chicken wire Duct tape Fabric Newspaper Ribbon Plastic Crepe paper Vinyl Garland Paint Styrofoam Balloons Foam Sustainable items may be considered as anything that may be reused after the parade, such as fabric or blankets, or something that may recycle such as paper and cardboard. Non - sustainable items include crepe paper, garland, and Styrofoam. Please make note of the items used in your float description to allow for recognition of your sustainable items. Be innovative and creative with your designs and supplies and best of luck in the float competition! Reuse supplies and items in order to remain sustainable. - PAB Homecoming Staff

Arizona State University Homecoming Block Party Sustainable Float Guidelines As part of Arizona State University s commitment to green our campus, here are some Sustainable Float Guidelines that you can integrate into your float if you choose. The benefits of integrating sustainability practices into ASU s Homecoming Block Party include: Meeting community expectations. Expressing our sustainability values. Serving as a leader for positive change. Diverting recyclables from the landfill. Increasing sustainability awareness. Green Materials and Construction Select construction materials that were once used for another purpose. Example: use the backside of a previously used banner as a painting surface. Use construction materials that are reusable. Example: Include a pumpkin or two that can be donated or used for home Halloween decorations. Use construction materials that are recyclable. Example: Plastics with number 1-7. Float design should not be too excessive or overbuilt. Example: Observe the Reduce Principle so that there are fewer items to recycle or throw away. Design the float so that it or parts of it can be disassembled and displayed elsewhere. Use local, recycled content, or sustainably certified materials. Example: Paper made from recycled content materials or FSC certified wood that you can purchase at Home Depot. Green Power Try to avoid adding electrical appliances on the vehicle. Consider selecting one of the following sustainable Float Propulsion Systems o Human powered or renewable powered vehicle o Electric vehicle o Alternative fuel vehicle (LP, CNG, Biofuel) o ULEV/SULEV/high mileage vehicle o Non-diesel powered vehicle

Green Message Ensure that the float contains a visibly and predominantly sustainability-themed message. Have the float include a visible sustainability-themed education or information component. Do not give handouts. If you are going to give handouts, etc, be sure that they are made of environmentally preferable materials. Ensure that the sustainability message is consistent with university s sustainability goals of carbon neutrality, zero water and solid waste, principled practice and active engagement. Have float riders show sustainability awareness. Example: No disposable water bottles, etc. Float Recycling The City of Tempe provides waste and recycling bins along Hassayampa (South side of Lemon Street between McAllister and Rural Roads) for the Homecoming Block Party floats. Reference the following City of Tempe recycling guidelines as you breakdown your float. Put in Recycling Bins o Paper, magazines, newspaper, catalogs o Cardboard o Corrugated Boxes o Glass bottles and jars (remove lids or caps) o Aluminum/Metal (cans or containers) o Plastic with recycle emblem 1-7 Put in Trash Bins o Styrofoam TM o Plastic Utensils (forks, knives, etc.) o Paper towels and Napkins o Six pack plastic beverage rings o Plastic bags, shrink, and bubble wrap o Food waste or liquids of any kind o Waxed coated beverage cups o Compostable or Biodegradables
