During , 483 children were enrolled t the school. Seven buses serve orth Pole Elementry, providing trnsporttion to pproximtely 75% of the student body. The remining 25% either wlk or get rides in privte vehicles. The wlk zone is mix of residentil, commercil, nd public property nd vcnt lnd. The school property is bordered on the northest by wooded re nd slough. Rilrod trcks re situted just two blocks west of the school. Site Chrcteristics There re ADA-complint sidewlks round school property. Lights round the school property nd prking lot provide dequte light. A foot bridge nd pth connect school property to Kit Rod. The plyground is fenced nd lighted. Prent nd bus drop-off res re within sme loop, but seprted with signge (Photo 1). There re no sidewlks, shoulders, or lighting long Dvis Street, E. 5 th Avenue, or Snowmn Lne. There re no officil crossing gurds round the school. The school provides stff t school entrnces. orth Pole Middle School is less thn ½ mile south of orth Pole Elementry. Middle school students re dismissed erlier thn elementry students nd cut through the elementry school property. Prents cited wether, mount of trffic, nd distnce s the top three issues ffecting their decision to llow their children to wlk to school. Severl prents commented on the lck of sidewlk nd bike pth connectivity from their neighborhood to the school. Summry The wlk zone infrstructure round orth Pole Elementry is deficient in severl res. Existing sidewlks re not consistently ADA-complint, there re no mrked crosswlks, there re missing or incomplete sections of sidewlk, nd the rilrod divides the wlk zone. Signge round the school is miniml. Students wlking south from the school must cross 5 th Avenue without the id of crosswlks or crossing gurds. Likewise, there re currently no sidewlk fcilities long Dvis Rod or Snowmn Lne. An upcoming City of orth Pole project includes the instlltion of new sidewlks long portions of Snowmn Lne nd Dvis Rod, nd the extension of the seprted pth long 5 th Avenue. Recommendtions Pve nd instll lights on the bike pth between 2 nd Avenue nd 3 rd Avenue long the Snowmn Lne RW. Move bike crossing signs locted on 5 th Avenue midblock between Dvis Boulevrd nd Kit Boulevrd pproximtely 200 feet bck from ech side of the bike pth. Redesign the intersection t Dvis Boulevrd nd 5 th Avenue for pedestrin sfety. Extend curb rdii in order to mke the crossing distnce shorter s well s to slow trffic, nd instll pinted crosswlks with signs. Instll ADA-complint sidewlks nd lighting long the north side of 4 th Avenue between Snt Clus Lne nd Snowmn Lne. Instll ADA-complint sidewlks long Dvis Street, 5 th Avenue, nd Snowmn Lne. Instll crosswlks with pedestrin-ctivted RRFB cross the intersections of PHS Boulevrd nd ld Richrdson Highwy (two), the trin trck crossing cross PHS Boulevrd, nd 8th Avenue nd Snowmn Lne (two).
