1 Physical and Emotional Preparation For the Camino I. Emotional Preparation A. Introduction Take responsibility for YOUR Camino-Walk your own Camino Empowerment to make some unpopular decisions No one else is responsible for giving you the experience you want, including your spouse or best friend or tour guide. Set ground rules with friends and family BEFORE you go B. Key Questions to Ask Yourself Why am I doing this? Any answer is the right answer. Is it for religious beliefs? A miracle? Spiritual reasons? For a long walk? For a pilgrimage? Competition? Spend time with a loved one? Healing? Grieving? Solitude? Socializing? Prevent boredom? Commune with God, nature? What Is My Main Objective?
2 To receive the Credentials? To make it all the way to Santiago de Compostella? What do I hope to learn, if anything? What do I want to experience? To beat a time? Compete? Commitment to God or my faith? What commitments do I need to make in order to achieve my goal? What will I regret if I don t do or don t experience? Regret. Rushing through Competing Missing out on the Camino experience Didn t fully see the beauty and scenery Didn t fully connect with people Didn t appreciate the experience, the food, the people, the beauty Were living in the future instead of the moment HOW Am I Going to Walk the Camino? How much time do I have? Am I limiting myself to a timeframe? What will I do if I get sick, injured, delayed in any fashion? Will I use a vehicle, skip a section? Organized group? Tour that transports my luggage? Solo? Use technology? Technology free? Combination? Have a watch? Maps? Pre-book accommodations? Only stay in albergues? Hotels?
3 With WHOM Will I Walk the Camino? Completely alone from beginning to end? Alone for a portion? The Camino: A Journey of the Spirit, by Shirley MacLaine Pros and cons of walking alone Part of a group or tour? What the Psychic Told the Pilgrim, by Jane Christmas With a significant other? With a friend? Where and When Will I Go? Which Camino do I want to walk? Solitude? Which terrain would I prefer? Length? What time of year will I go? How well do I handle the heat? How well do I handle cold and rain? Crowds? Will the facilities be open? Will they be full? C. Importance of Knowing WHY you are walking and WHAT your objectives are Less likely to have regrets about the experience, after the fact If someone violates your expectations you ll notice in short order If YOU don t respect your own reasons for doing the Camino or respect your objectives you ll notice Anger Frustration
4 Sadness Irritability Emotional Outbursts II. Physical Preparation A. Introduction Definition of torture 1a : anguish of body or mind : agony : something that causes agony or pain 2 : the infliction of intense pain (as from burning, crushing, or wounding) to punish, coerce, or afford sadistic pleasure (Merriam-Webster Online; What You Need to Know It s gruelling All the things you ve told yourself about what won t happen to you mean nothing Your body will probably let you down in ways you never imagined Plan for really painful and infected blisters Preparing for the worst will make you appreciate anything less than awful. B. How to Prepare Physically Medical Issues Visit your GP BEFORE you start training Be explicit with GP about what the Camino entails, such as walking 20+ km per day, every day Make sure your GP is honest with you Visit any specialists BEFORE you start training Fill prescriptions in Canada Carry them on the flight in their original packaging Know what to do in the event you lose them
5 Training Be honest with yourself about your fitness level Challenge your body! Hire a personal trainer. Condition your body, condition your mind Physical pain causes emotional turmoil. It s the emotional suffering that will make you want to quit. Prepare a memory or create a story/image where you ve demonstrated strength, resolve and strategies to get through Train like you fight training should mimic the event as much as possible Clothing/footwear Backpack Training sessions that resemble what you expect from your Camino experience Training sessions that resemble the distance, time, weather, and topography of your Camino Work up gradually to full weight in pack, full distance of walk. Stretching Merits of stretching Stretching prevents injury Creates flexibility around the joint Puts muscles back to original state Helps rid muscles of lactic acid Stretch once body is warmed up Stretch often Research stretches (or get some from your PT) C. Conclusion Know that most, if not all, of your expectations will be violated.
6 Preparing for the Camino and remembering why you re out there will help you cope with these violations. In the dark moments, knowing why you re there will keep you going Know that it s worth it and you ll never regret finishing a Camino Appreciate this journey and leave any worries out of it. Be grateful for the wonderful gift of the unknown ahead of you. God will be with you and everything will be okay.
