3 Where The Proceeds Go Each year, the Walk to Defeat ALS brings communities together in the fight against Lou Gehrig s Disease. Though we walk for various reasons, we are united in our quest to find a cure for ALS. To help persons with ALS (PALS) and their families live life as fully as possible, The ALS Association, Greater Los Angeles Chapter provides the following services free of charge: Certified Center at Pennsylvania Hospital Resource/Support Groups Home Visits and Case Management Transportation to appointments Visiting Volunteer program Equipment Loan Closet Advocacy Public Awareness Research

5 Form your Walk Team! A team captain is responsible for recruiting team members from their community, and collecting the monies the members raise. Team members can obtain donations from their corporation, local florist, chef or local restaurants, maintenance workers, policeman, firefighters, and hairdressers Your Options are Endless! A team is composed of one or more people. Your team can be made up of relatives, friends, neighbors, and business associates. Ask your co-workers to join you and create a Corporate Walk team!

6 After you begin building your walk team it s time to start fundraising Update your personal page & Raise more money online - Participants who customize their Walk web pages raised 3x more money than those who keep the provided text/picture. Add a picture Tell your story Did you know that the average donation received by cash or check is $25, while the average online donation is $62? Make the first pledge yourself - this tells your follow teammates t that t you are committed and supporting your team Hold a team fundraiser - beef n beer, bake sale, garage sale, raffle.,, g g, Events are a great way to raise money, camaraderie and awareness

7 Send s - Encourage online donations send an announcement of your plan to participate i t in the walk to friends, family, co-workers, church h members, etc. Sell ALS wristbands or paper p feet - paper pp feet can be sold at local businesses, schools and other high areas of traffic for $1 each. The feet are free and available tonight. The wristbands can be purchased tonight as well. You can sell wristbands for $2 a piece at a fundraising event or give them to your donors. Ask 10 people for $10 = $100 Use Social Networking Sites to reach more people facebook, twitter, myspace

8 Use Matching Gifts Double your Donations! Many companies will match their employee s philanthropic i contributions. Be sure to ask your employer. Also, ask the people who have sponsored you to find out if they have a matching gift program at their workplace. If your company has a matching gift program, request a matching gift form and send it completed and signed with your gift. The Association will do the rest. Visit to see if your company has a matching gifts program and remind your Walk team members and donors to do the same! Launch a letter-writing/ campaign - This is one of the easiest and most effective ways to raise money. You can raise 5 to 10 times more money. Again, make it personal and tell people why you are involved and why they should give to this important cause.

9 Fundraising in a Tough Economy The number one reason people stop giving to a cause is because people stop asking. Whether you are a first-time participant in the Walk to Defeat ALS or a seasoned walker, make the choice to continue to ask your family, friend, colleagues and neighbors (everyone!) to support you and/or your Walk Team through a contribution. Please don t assume that donors will be less likely to support you - let them decide!

10 FAQ About Donations Can I turn in checks before the Walk? If you are receiving checks, you can send them to the chapter office at: The ALS Association 321 Norristown Road, Suite 260 Ambler, PA *Please make sure you indicate the TEAM NAME on your checks* What if I receive checks after the Walk? Our experience from past Walks was that lots of checks came in during the MONTHS following the walk. You can continue to fundraise after the Walk is over and all money will be credited to your Walk team.

11 Steps to a successful walk team Rally your troops Ask everyone you know to join your Walk team. Ask Family, Friends, Co- workers, Neighbors, anyone who wants to join you in the fight against Lou Gehrig s Disease! The average letter-writing campaign raises $2,500! Walkers who launch /letter-writing campaigns raise the most money of all participants. The more people you ask = The more $ you will raise

12 Walk Day Tips & Information The Walk is at Citizens Bank Park Home of the Philadelphia Phillies The Walk is approximately 2 miles. Parking for the Walk will be in Lots S, T and U off of Pattison Avenue and registration and all pre-walk activities will take place at the Third Base Gate The Mike Schmidt statue. The map can be found on the home page of the Greater Philadelphia Walk under Directions. It will also be ed out to all team captains as we get closer to the walk. The walk will start on the concourse and go out into the parking lot. The walk is rain or shine. Should we need to utilize our rain plan, we will move some activities under cover but we will still walk outside so please dress accordingly. Dogs are welcome at the walk. However, dogs are not allowed to walk along the concourse in the stadium. A special walk route for dogs will be set up. Dogs and their owners start outside the 3 rd base gate pick up the Walk there. We will have guides to help direct people to this Walk start location. If walkers do decide to bring dogs, please make sure to clean up after them and keep them on a leash.

13 Registration Info Registration is from 10:00am 11:00am. Registration will take place inside the turn-styles. Registration is where we collect any donations you may be turning in on walk day and where you can pick up your team sign. Only Team Captains can register their team. Team captains, please collect of all of your team s envelopes and donations before checking in your team. Walkers, please find your team captain and give them your money. Please try to check-in your team as early as possible so we can start the Walk on time. If you have no money to turn in meaning that it is all online, we do ask that all team captains check in, pick up their sign and let us know that you have arrived Please note that you should have one completed walker donation envelope for every person who is walking on your team.

14 Registration Info The only exception to this is a walker who registered online and is not turning anything in on Walk day they have already acknowledged the waiver when they registered online. All other walkers must have a completed form. There will be envelopes at the Walk or you can contact me to get more sent out to you if you need them. A good suggestion is to get your donation collection envelopes out to your team members early mail them, drop them off at their houses but get them in their hands early. This will encourage them to start fundraising and it will also make things easier for you on Walk day. Tell your walkers to bring the filled out and signed envelopes to you on Walk morning so that you can hand them in at registration. There will be extra envelopes at the Walk site but the more you get out of the way early on the better for you.

15 Registration Info Team Captains, be sure to communicate all of this information to your walkers. It is a good idea to have a designated meeting place. We have many walkers come up to registration asking where their team is or how to go about registering. All online donations made to your team by 12:00 noon Friday, November 6 th will be included in your Walk day total. Please do not include any online donations entered before Friday, November 7 th in your Walk day total or they will be double-counted. Only checks and cash that have not been previously entered on your team or personal page should be counted in the Walk day total. This year walkers cannot enter off-line donations to your page to see your fundraising thermometer go up. These checks or cash must be mailed into our office or brought on walk day.
