INTRODUCTION OF MIDFIELD Now add a #0 & #8 to the practice for the defending team and a holding midfielder for the attacking team. Now play half field with 3 counter goals, central and 2 in wide areas. COACHING POINTS 3 #9 - Moves into a position to block switch pass between center backs and effect a pass into the holding midfielder. # - Moves into a position to block pass to wide forward and to be able to pressure Full Back if ball goes 2wide. #7 - Tucks in as weak side defender into a position to block pass into midfield but to also apply pressure to 2nd centre back if a poor pass is played or to weak side full back if ball is switched. #0 moves into a position to prevent a pass splitting #9 & # into the AM feet. #8 moves centrally into a position to apply pressure to the holding midfielder should the pass get played through. SHAPE AFTER TRANSITION As ball moves all players must move at same speed to prevent gaps appearing in defensive lines and to deny penetration. Nearest wide player (#) to pressure ball by first denying pass wide and forcing play centrally into pressure before trying to win possession of the ball. #9 drops centrally to prevent pass into midfield and force play backwards. Close enough to cover # if beaten but and stop split pass, but far enough away to pressure CB should a weak back pass be played. #7 tucks in on weak side to provide balance. Takes up a position of an attacking midfielder with good distance from #9 to stop split pass, but be able to get across to FB should pass be switched. #0 moves into a position to prevent a pass splitting #9 & # into the AM feet. #8 moves centrally into a position to apply pressure to the holding midfielder should the pass get played through.
SWITCH OF PLAY #7 begins to creep across towards weak side full back making sure to angle the run so to block the line pass and force centrally #9 must move across at the same speed as #7 to maintain distance and not allow a passing lane to appear. 3 Blue line shows covereing run should AM be out of position, yellow line shows run if team shape is solid. # must match the speed of #9 & #7 to keep angles and distance the same to prevent gaps appearing2 #8 moves into a position to prevent a pass splitting #9 & # into the AM feet. #0 moves centrally into a position to apply pressure to the holding midfielder should the pass get played through. 3 players must go together, stay together and arrive together so no passing lanes appear to allow opposition to penetrate. While in transition players are watching the ball, player in possession and checking behind them for movement of opposition. This requires a high work rate and desire to want to defend. SHAPE AFTER TRANSITION As ball moves all players must move at same speed to prevent gaps appearing in defensive lines and to deny penetration. Nearest wide player (#7) to pressure ball by first denying pass wide and forcing play centrally into pressure before trying to win possession of the ball #9 drops centrally to prevent pass into midfield and force play backwards. Close enough to cover # if beaten but and stop split pass, but far enough away to pressure CB should a weak back pass be played. # tucks in on weak side to provide balance. Takes up a position of an attacking midfielder with good distance from #9 to stop split pass, but be able to get across to FB should pass be switched. #8 moves into a position to prevent a pass splitting #9 & #7 into the AM feet. #0 moves centrally into a position to apply pressure to the holding midfielder should the pass get played through.
INTRODUCTION OF #6 Now add a #6 to the practice for the defending team and a two attacking midfielders for the attacking team. Now play half field with 3 counter goals, central and 2 in wide areas. 3 COACHING POINTS #9 - Moves into a position to block pass to other CB and force to either FB or into midfield pressure # - Moves into a position to block 2 pass to wide forward and to be able to pressure Full Back if ball goes wide. #7 - Tucks in as weak side defender into a position to block pass into midfield but to also apply pressure to 2nd centre back if a poor pass is played or to weak side full back if ball is switched. MIDFIELD 3 The 3 midfield players will mark space but need to be in a position to apply pressure to all 3 opposition midfielders should a pass be played. The position of the 3 should be so that the player in possession can t play a forward pass into midfield through fear the receiving player will lose possession due to pressure. Blue arrows show movement as ball moves, red arrow shows pressure that can be applied if position is correct but ball gets through gaps. #0 moves into a position to prevent a pass splitting #9 & # into the AM feet. #8 moves centrally into a position to apply pressure to the holding midfielder should the pass get played through, but also get across to full back if ball switched #6 Slides across into a position to apply pressure to AM if ball gets there but to also to screen and prevent ball being played into the CF feet.
BALL TO RIGHT BACK # - Gets across to deny pass down the line and force play centrally into pressure #9 - Moves into a position to block pass to toher CB and force pass going into holding midfield 3player forcing play backwards #0 - Moves across to provide cover for # and block pass into CF and AM. #8 - Moves into central position to 2 block pass into other AM #6 - Gets across to apply pressure to nearest AM and screen pass into CF Team must move across as a unit and move at same speed to prevent gaps and passing lanes appearing.
IN TRANSITION As ball moves all players must move at same speed to prevent gaps appearing in defensive lines and to deny penetration (shown by blue arrows) Nearest wide player (#7)works across 3 to ball denying pass wide and forcing play centrally into pressure before trying to win possession of the ball. #9 drops centrally to prevent pass into midfield and force play backwards. Close enough to 2cover # if beaten but and stop split pass, but far enough away to pressure CB should a weak back pass be played. # tucks in on weak side to provide balance. Takes up a position of an attacking midfielder with good distance from #9 to stop split pass, but be able to get across to FB should pass be switched. #8 moves into a position to prevent a pass splitting #9 & #7 into the AM feet. #0 moves centrally into a position to apply pressure to the holding midfielder should the pass get played through but also be able to get back across should ball be switched again #6 shuffles across to deny pass into CF but also be able to pressure either AM should pass get played through. The Red arrows show how each players position can allow them to apply pressure to each opponent should the ball get played through the pressure.
BALL TO RIGHT BACK # - Gets across to deny pass down the line and force play centrally into pressure #9 - Moves into a position to stop pass going to other CB and force into FB or holding midfield 3player under pressure. #0 - Moves across to provide cover for # and block pass into CF and AM. #8 - Moves into central position to block pass into other AM #6 - Gets across to apply pressure 2to nearest AM and screen pass into CF Team must move across as a unit and move at same speed to prevent gaps and passing lanes appearing. #8 moves into a position to prevent a pass splitting #9 & #7 into the AM feet. #0 moves centrally into a position to apply pressure to the holding midfielder should the pass get played through, but also get across to full back if ball switched #6 Slides across into a position to apply pressure to AM if ball gets there but to also to screen and prevent ball being played into the CF feet.
BALL WITH OPPOSITION #6 At some point the ball will get through to the opposition #6. Nearest player must move to apply pressure, block a pass and make play predictable. Diagram shows: #8 moving to apply pressure, blocking pass 3to AM and forcing play centrally towards team mates. #0 Provides cover, finding a position to pressure other AM should pass go there but to also block forward passes and apply pressure should DM dribble past #8. 2 #6 provides balance, screening pass into CF and also being in a position to slide across and pressure AM should pass sneak through. Diagram 2 shows how good positioning can allow player to apply pressure to numerous players from one position (shown by blue arrow) Diagram 3 shows each pass that is being prevented by positioning of #8, #0 & #6. (prevented passes shown by red arrow)
BALL WITH OPPOSITION #8 If a pass can be made to another midfielder from the opposition the midfield must recover and regain team shape. #0 works across to prevent pass being played wide to again force play centrally towards pressure. 3 #6 slide across to provide cover and block pass into CF. #8 provides balance being in a position to pressure 2nd AM should pass be attempted. Diagram 2 shows play being forced centrally, shape the midfield should 2 adopt and where pressure can be applied. Diagram 3 shows play being forced wide if midfield don t have cover and balance. This would cause #3 to be drawn out of position meaning #0 needs to drop in and provide cover so #4 & #5 are not drawn out of position. COACHING POINTS Players must recover and shift across at the same speed to prevent gaps in the unit that will allow split passes Players must check for team mates, opposition players and the ball whilst in transition Force play centrally into pressure if team mates are in good defensive positions behind pressuring player Trigger to pressure - bad touch, slow pass, hesitation, facing own goal.
BALL WITH OPPOSITION #0 If midfield shape forces play centrally ball may get switched from opposition. As ball travels nearest player must work across to apply pressure and force play centrally again into pressure. Diagram shows #8 working across to force play centrally if pass can not be 3 intercepted. #6 shifts across to prevent pass being played into CF #0 shifts across to provide balance. Diagram 2 shows good defensive shape after transition and blue arrows show each players potential movement to pressure ball 2 should a pass be played. Diagram 3 shows slow recovery, so ball has been forced wide causing #2 to be drawn out of position. #8 must drop in to cover #2 so CBs can stay as a pair, with #6 & #0 recovering into good positions to screen passes and pressure CMs COACHING POINTS Players must recover and shift across at the same speed to prevent gaps in the unit that will allow split passes Players must check for team mates, opposition players and the ball whilst in transition Force play centrally into pressure if team mates are in good defensive positions behind pressuring player Trigger to pressure - bad touch, slow pass, hesitation, facing own goal.
