1 August 2011 A Note from The President - Ken Werner Dear Mentor Soccer Club families: I would like to welcome all of you to Mentor Soccer Club for the soccer year. We hope to have a good year and a good experience for all our players, parents, spectators, coaches, referees, and volunteers. Please visit our website, for information on our programs, club news, schedules, team rosters, and sign up information. I would like to thank all our board members, officers, and volunteers for their efforts. There are countless hours put in by these and many other volunteers in order to ensure quality programs for your children. So please take an opportunity to thank our volunteers when you see them! Mentor Soccer Club serves nearly 1,500 youth soccer players, and without the work of dedicated volunteers we would not be successful. We would be grateful if you would consider volunteering some time to the Club. If you would consider helping out, please us at admin@mentorsoccerclub.com. Thank you very much for your support of Mentor Soccer Club. We know that you have put faith in us to help provide a good experience for your child. We take that responsibility very seriously. Yours in Soccer, Ken Werner President, Mentor Soccer Club Looking For Help - Marketing/PR Coordinator - develop and implement ideas to increase club awareness and membership - MSC Wave Assistant Administrator - assist VP-Wave with administration of MSC Wave program - Volunteer Coordinator - help recruit volunteers, develop and maintain job descriptions, and plan appreciation event (this job can be split among 2-3 people) - Fundraising Coordinator - work with our fundraising company to conduct our annual fundraiser If you feel you might be able to help, or need more information, please us at admin@mentorsoccerclub.com. Thank you. Wave Uniform Care Instructions The care instructions that came with your new Wave uniform kit stated that the jerseys and shorts should not be put in the dryer. This will help protect the customization of the logo and numbers. Friday Night Lights Skills and Thrills! Starting Aug. 26th Every Friday night, the Wave coaching staff puts on Friday Night Lights at Garfield Park behind the tennis courts. These training sessions are open to all Mentor Soccer Club players. The session will alternate weekly between footskills and 3v3 tournament games. Players will receive points for participation and performance with the high point winners receiving prizes weekly. Sessions for age groups U10 and under run from 5:45-7:00 pm and U11 and up age group sessions run from 7:00-8:15 pm every Friday beginning August 26th.
2 Goalie Training Monday Nights Starting Aug 29 th MSC is proud to offer goalie training every Monday night at Krueger Park from 6:30 to 7:30 beginning Aug 29 th. The training is run by Ricky Carreira, MSC s official goalkeeping coach. Coach Ricky is the starting goalkeeper for Lake Erie College. The training is specifically geared for goalies and will cover all aspects of this specialized position. All goalkeepers need to attend these practices on Mondays. Rec Season to begin September 6 th The Fall Rec Season will kick off on Tuesday, September 6 th. We hope everyone is looking forward to a fun filled season of soccer. The most important part of the Rec program is having fun! It is also a great program to learn and develop your skills. Good luck to all the teams and have fun playing the best game in the world. The DOC Is In - with Jim Buchan As our new Director of Coaching, DOC, I hope to help coaches become better thus the players will improve. I will also spend some time working with the Recreation sideof the Mentor program. The rec is very important, In my eyes, it has its place in our club as the most vital supplier of players which can help our Wave program. With our new curriculum, I have been working at, with the help of Ken Werner, and Tom Katoch, both great assets to this Club; we have given the coaches in Rec some new fresh training ideas. Our summer camp was a great success and most of this again must go to Ken Werner for collecting and registering players and a great set of coaches. Congrats must go to the coaches, they were Andy Marson, Andy T, and Marco and Nate from Lake Erie College and also to our CIT, Megan Werner. We have begun a new program called CIT's, it is to bring into the club new young high school players to learn how to become a coach. Coaches in Training will be used as much as possible to give the students as much hands on experience as possible. We used these CIT's at the Mentor City Camp, they were a great credit to themselves and the name of Mentor Soccer. Many of these kids are doing it for School Community service, I am very proud of them they were brilliant. Again I must give credit to Tom Katoch for supplying these fine students. Well I hope our seasons go well and we achieve our own team and individual goals. I will be around coming to practices and games when my schedule allows. Please feel free to drop me a line if you have any The DOC Is In - Continued questions or are in need of help. I am very fortunate to work with a great group of coaches and parents which care so much about this Club. See you on the field. Your DOC Jim Buchan Wave Coach in the Spotlight Jim Buchan MSC Director of Coaching Head Coach Wave Coed U8, Girls U9 and Boys U12. A native of Scotland, Coach Jim had a 14 year professional career as a goalkeeper. He began playing professionally at the age of 16 for Aberdeen in the Scottish Premier League. He also played for Peterhead and Dundee Utd in Scotland, and then Blackfield and Chesterfield in England. He was named Player of the Year in the Scottish League two years in a row After moving to Canada, he played 6 years in the Canadian Soccer League with Calgary, Toronto, Kitchener and North York. He was named Most Valuable Player in the Canadian Soccer League in the season. Coach Jim has 17 years of college coaching experience, 15 as a head college coach. Jim was named the Division II Great Planes Coach of the Year twice and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Coach of the Year two times as well. Coach Jim is a member of the Olympic Development Program (ODP) Region 2 Staff and the Mentor Soccer Club is fortunate to have him as part of our team. Rec Coach of the Month Rick Sippola Rick Sippola coaches a U8 rec team. This is his second year coaching in Mentor Soccer League. Rick says I coach so that I can teach the kids not only how to play soccer, but more importantly, how a positive attitude, team work and good sportsmanship can be good life skills. Coaching is a great outlet for me to be a positive role model for our youth and while having fun at the same time. Rick lives in Kirtland Hills with his wife Karen and two sons Quinn (U11) and Kirt (U8). Both boys have played for many years in Mentor Soccer League and are both currently on Mentor Wave Soccer teams. Lake County Rapid Fire Tournament Sep The annual Lake County Rapid Fire Tournament, hosted by the Mentor Soccer Club, will be held at Krueger Park the weekend of Sept. 23rd. This tournament is one of the few Rec only tournaments in the area. The tournament has received great reviews in the past, and it is a great way for Rec players and families to
3 Rapid Fire - Continued experience the fun and excitement of a tournament weekend! Teams are expected from Mentor and the surrounding area to compete. Talk to you rec coach for more information. Soccer News Real Madrid soccer team signs 7-year-old who goes by the single name 'Leo' MADRID, Spain -- Real Madrid has signed a 7-year-old soccer prodigy from Argentina who goes by the name Leo - just like Lionel Messi. Leonel Angel Coira signed with the Spanish club and will begin training Sept. 6, Madrid Soccer News - Continued spokesman Juan Tapiador told The Associated Press on Monday. Coira told the Argentine sports daily Ole last week that his idol is Messi, the Barcelona forward who is also Argentine and goes by the name Leo. Coira said he prefers to pass rather than score. He already has a Facebook page featuring photos of his visit to Real Madrid. Madrid reportedly made the push to sign Coira because Spanish league rival Atletico Madrid was also pursuing the youngster. Barcelona signed Messi from the Argentine club Newell's Old Boys as a teenager and he has gone on to win the World Player of the Year award two times. He also has helped Barcelona win 15 trophies, including three Champions League titles and five Spanish league championships.
