1. Open Stick Block Tackle: Tackle Box 2. Open Stick Block Tackle: Letters and Numbers Set up tackle boxes with goal at each end Divide into pairs (one per tackle box) Attacker begins with the ball and tries to score in opposite goal Defender aims to win the ball with a block tackle and score in the opposite goal Begin with attacker moving straight towards the defender to allow defender to practice the tackle Speed up exercise and allow attacker to try to evade defender once technique has been mastered Alternate attacking and defending players Set up area using cones as per diagram with a goal at each end Place all balls at one end of the area (to the left of the attacking team) Divide into two teams Attacking team are numbered Defending team are lettered Call letter and number Attacking player retrieves a ball and tries to score in the opposite goal by dribbling the ball through the goal Defending player runs through the clear goal and must defend the goal focusing on block tackling Switch attacking and defending teams 3. Static Slap: Pairs 4. Static Slap: Call the Name Divide into pairs with a ball between each pair Players practice static slapping to each other Count the number of slaps which were correctly directed to the open side of the partners stick Set up circles of 5/6 cones with one player on each cone One player starts with the ball. They call another player s name and slap pass to that player. Receiver scans and calls the name of the player he/she will pass to just before receiving the ball. See how many accurate slap passes each group can do in a specific time.
Open Stick Block Tackle: Letters and Numbers Coach Notes Age: All ages Open Stick Block Tackle: Tackle Box Coach Notes Age: All ages Balls, cones, sticks Balls, cones, sticks Coaching Points: Use more than one area if too many players and more than one coach Focus on defender using good block tackle technique Coaching Points: Focus on defender Head kept up to watch the attacking player Stick held in basic grip Body sideways with left foot in front of right foot will encourage attacker onto defender s open side Low body position and on balls of feet to adjust position if necessary Stick low to the ground - use whole of the stick to block the ball Make tackle at last moment to catch attacker off guard Static Slap: Call the Name Coach Notes Age: 1st Class up Static Slap: Pairs Coach Notes Age: All ages Balls, sticks Coaching Points: Players should think about where who they are going to pass to and call the name before they receive the ball Focus on good slapping technique and accuracy Ensure everyone is being included Coaching Points: Before receiving the ball, scan to see where to pass the ball. Then focus on the ball Both hands together near the top of the stick Low body position to sweep length of stick along the ground Left leg bent, toes in line with hands. Right leg stretched behind and bent at the knee Ball in front or level with left foot about 1 stick away Sweep stick in arc from behind right foot. Stick finishes with end pointing towards the target
5. Static Slap: Disguise Pass 6. Moving Push: Pass and Receive Set up square areas Divide into groups of 3 (2 attackers, 1 defender) Attackers make slap hit passes to each other while disguising the direction of their pass using their head Alternate so everyone has a turn of being the defender. Set up three cones with approx 5 m between each one with one ball per group (plus some spares) Divide into groups of 4 with 2 players standing at each outside cone First player dribbles ball to centre cone and passes it to the first player on the opposite cone and joins the end of the opposite line The receiver makes a run towards the ball to receive, carries it to the middle and pushes it to the player on the opposite cone who comes forwards to receive See how many accurate passes and receives each group can do 7. Moving Push: Parallel Passing and Receiving 8. Moving Push: Running the Gauntlet Set up 2 rows of cones. Have all balls together at one of the end cones Divide into two groups with one group at the end of each line of cones Players run parallel to each other push passing the ball. Ball is passed at each cone to the other player s open side Progress to include a defender or 2 defenders to put pressure on the pass Set up cones as per diagram Position 1 player at cones D, C and D. Divide the rest of the players between cones A and E Player at A carries the ball and passes to Player B and continues running to receive the ball back on the move. He/she then passes it to Player C and keeps running to receive it back. Continues with passing to and receiving from Player D. Finishes by passing to Player E who repeats the drill in the opposite direction. Player A joins the line at Cone E Alternate players at B, C and D so everyone can run the gauntlet
Moving Push: Pass and Receive Coach Notes Static Slap: Disguise Pass Coach Notes Age: All ages once static push is mastered Age: 2nd class up Coaching Points: Focus on slap correct push technique Players should aim to have the ball on their stick all the time No sound should be heard as the ball is pushed Encourage receiver to move forward to receive ball on the move Coaching Points: Focus on slap correct slap technique Players should disguise the direction of their pass through deliberately looking in a different direction and using peripheral vision to identify the actual pass Moving Push: Running the Gauntlet Coach Notes Moving Push: Parallel Passing and Receiving Coach Notes Age: 2nd class up Age: All ages once static push is mastered Coaching Points: Focus on body position and accuracy of the passes Players should have feet facing the direction they want to go Ball should be passed to open side of the receiver s stick (i.e. in front of the player on the right and behind slightly behind the player on the left) First touch should move the ball the direction the player is moving Coaching Points: Focus on body position and accuracy of the pass Players should have feet facing forwards but pass to the side Ball should be passed to open side of the receiver s stick (i.e. in front of the player on the right and behind slightly behind the player on the left)
9. Moving Hit: Strike the Cone 10. Moving Hit: Shoot on the Run Set up line of 5 different coloured cones on end line Divide into groups of 5 4 players stand at semi circle of cones approx 10m from end line Give each player 3/4 balls One player (A) stands in the middle of the area Players take it in turns to pass ball to Player A and to call a colour of one of the cones Player A controls the ball and hits at the coloured cone which has been called. Count how many correct hits are made Set up a goal and circle using cones and throw down lines. Base distance on age and ability. Place one cone outside the circle with all balls at this cone Divide into groups of 3 Player carries ball from the cone into the circle and hits the ball at the goal while on the move. Player then returns to the back of the line. All balls are collected when coach blows the whistle Progress to getting players to practice hitting off right foot 11. Moving Hit: Goal Scoring 12. Moving Hit: Moving up the Pitch Set up a goal with cones and position 4 cones at A, B, C and D. Divide all balls between cones A and C Divide into groups of 3 2 players stand at A and C and one at B and D Player at Cone A push passes the ball to Player at Cone B who towards the pass to receive on the move. He/she takes one touch to control the ball and the takes a hit at the goal The receiver then joins the line at Cone A while the player who gave the pass moves quickly to Cone B ready to receive the next pass. The same exercise is repeated between Cones C and D Swap groups to allow everyone to receive from right and left Set up channel across the pitch. For 3rd class use a quarter pitch. Increase width and length for older groups Divide players into groups of 4. One ball per group. Position the players at Cones A, B, C and D at one side of the pitch Player A hits the ball to player B. Player B hits the ball to player C. Player C hits the ball to player D and runs diagonally to receive a push pass down the line. Player D the crosses inside to replace player C and the exercise is repeated back across the channel. Players all move up the channel in a line until they reach the other side of the pitch.
Moving Hit: Shoot on the Run Coach Notes Moving Hit: Strike the Cone Coach Notes Age: All ages once static hit has been mastered Age: All ages once static hit has been mastered throw down lines Balls, sticks, different coloured cones Coaching Points: Set up as many groups as needed Ensure no one collects balls until coach blows the whistle to avoid injury Focus on hitting technique Ball should be positioned ahead of player s front foot so they are reaching for it Coaching Points: Set up as many groups as needed Two touches - one to control, one to hit Players receive ball from different directions Encourage players to be aware of where the goal is at all times Alternate player A to ensure all players get a turn in the middle Moving Hit: Moving up the Pitch Coach Notes Moving Hit: Goal Scoring Coach Notes Age: 3rd Class up Age: 1st Class up Balls, sticks Coaching Points: Focus on accuracy and strength of passes Needs to be fast movement off the ball to receive the push pass Ensure enough width to allow for hitting May be necessary to complete drill slowly until it is fully understood Coaching Points: Set up as many goals as needed Ensure no one collects balls until coach blows the whistle to avoid injury Focus on hitting technique and footwork
13. Reverse Stick Receiving: Pairs Divide into pairs with a ball between each pair Players practice push passing to each others reverse stick Player receives the ball on the reverse and then pulls it across their body quickly to return an open push pass 14. Reverse Stick Receiving: Flat 2 Handed Divide into pairs, one ball per pair Players pass to each other s reverse side Player stops the ball with two hands and stick flat on the ground. Then moves the ball quickly to open side to return the pass. Progress to stopping the ball Flat 1 handed as well. 15. Reverse Stick Receiving: In Play Set up boxes as shown with a goal at one end and two other goals. Have 3 players per box - Passer (A), Receiver (B) and Defender (X). A passes the ball towards B. B runs to meet it and receives it on the reverse side. X also runs to put pressure on B from behind. B controls the ball, moves it to their strong side and engages in a 1v1 with X aiming to score a goal. Change positions once ball is out of play. 16. Moving Slap: Strike the Cone Set up line of 5 different coloured cones on end line Divide into groups of 5 4 players stand at semi circle of cones approx 10m from end line Give each player 3/4 balls One player (A) stands in the middle of the area Players take it in turns to pass ball to Player A and to call a colour of one of the cones Player A controls the ball and slaps the ball at the coloured cone which has been called. Count how many accurate slaps are made
Reverse Stick Receiving: Flat 2 Handed Coach Notes Reverse Stick Receiving: Pairs Coach Notes Age: 1st Class up Age: 1st Class up Balls, sticks Balls, sticks Coaching Points: Used if player has plenty of space. Stick flat on the ground. Player aims to stop the ball with the shaft of the stick a few inches below the head. Coaching Points: Focus on hand and body position Hands in basic grip Players should be on balls of feet so they can re-position quickly Stick in an upright position Stick angled slightly to cushion ball Ball moved quickly from reverse to open side Moving Slap: Strike the Cone Coach Notes Reverse Stick Receiving: In Play Coach Notes Age: All ages once static slap has been mastered Age: 2nd Class up Balls, sticks, different coloured cones Coaching Points: Set up as many groups as needed Two touches - one to control, one to slap Players receive ball from different directions Encourage players to be aware of where the goal is at all times Alternate player A to ensure all players get a turn in the middle Coaching Points: Focus on good positioning for reverse stick receiving and quick movement of ball to strong ball carrying position
17. Moving Slap: 3 v Shooting: King of the Ring Set up squares using cones or throw down lines Divide into groups of 4 (3 attackers 1 defender) Attackers need to pass the ball to each other in the area using slapping without the defended intercepting Defender must not tackle but can only win the ball through an interception Alternate the defender to allow everyone to have a turn in the middle Divide into teams of 4 (one team wear bibs). For each group of 8 set up a goal and circle using cones and throw down lines. Use keepers if available One feeder on each team stands on the 23m line. All balls at the 23m line Teams take it in turns to start with the ball. Feeder passes into one of their team mates in the circle. Team with the ball are attackers. Other team defends. Attacking team tries to score. If they pass to a team mate before they score they get an extra point. 1 point for a goal; 2 points for a goal with a pass in the circle As soon as ball goes out of play, next ball is fed in by the other team. 19. Shooting: Scoring under pressure 20. Shooting: One Touch Shot Use goal and circle or set one up (set up more than one if lots of players) Position one player as defender and one goal keeper. One player starts as an attacker in the circle All other players stand outside the circle with all the balls. First feeder passes ball into attacker from outside circle. Attacker needs to beat the defender and shoot at the goal. They should then be ready for any rebounds After making the pass, the feeder joins the attacker in the circle for any rebounds or passes. Once ball is out of play, feeder becomes the attacker, attacker becomes the defender and defender goes to the back of the line Divide into pairs. One goal per pair. One cone in front of goal (approx 5m, other cone a further 10m out) One player on each cone. All balls at outer cone Player tosses balls into player in front of the goal. Tosses should be random e.g. bouncing, fast slow, high, left right etc Player needs to reposition herself to take the fastest shot possible for each pass. Player needs to shoot straight from the pass. No touch to reposition the ball. After 10 balls players swap positions
Shooting: Coach Notes Moving Slap: 3 v 1 Coach Notes Age: 1st class up Age: 2nd class up once static slap has been mastered, throw down lines, bibs or throw down lines Coaching Points: Accurate pass from the feeder Players should do a quick scan to see where their team mates are Shoot early Attacking players be ready for rebounds Coaching Points: Ensure passes are made using correct slapping technique Encourage players to disguise the direction of their pass Shooting: One Touch Shot Coach Notes Shooting: Scoring under Pressure Coach Notes Age: 1st class up Coaching Points: Concentrated toss from the feeder Player taking the shot needs to reposition before receiving the ball Must take straight shot (e.g. if the pass is to the left, player needs to strike with the reverse If there is a keeper, alternate groups so every one has a chance at rebounds Age: 1st class up & throw down lines (if necessary) Coaching Points: Accurate pass from the feeder Attacking player needs to be aware of their position in relation to the goal and the defender Attacking player should move away from defender and call for the pass Quick decision making on how to beat the defender Both attacker and feeder ready for rebounds
21. Shooting: Deflection Drill Use goal and circle. Set up 5 cones as shown. One on top of circle, 2 either side approx 5m from end line and 2 outside circle just outside line with posts One shooter on top of circle with all the balls. Padded goalkeeper in goal. Other players line up behind each of the outside cones. Shooter signals to first group of four to start running and then takes a hard shot at goal. Outside players run to posts, players running from the top run to the keepers pads. Must run with stomachs facing the goal and sticks angled on the ground with toe of stick pointing at the goal. One player must deflect goal before goalie gets it. Other players ready for rebounds or deflections. Once ball is out of play, players join a different line 22. Shooting: Back out to the Top Use goal and circle. Set up 3 cones as shown. Set up more than one goal using cones and throw down lines as needed One shooter starts at cone on top of circle. Other players line up behind the cone at the side line with all the balls. First player carries the ball down the side line, along the base line to the cone. They go around the cone and then pass to the player on top of the circle who shoots. If using a keeper both players should be ready for deflections and rebounds. Players rotate positions with ball carrier moving to top of the circle and the shooter moving to the back of the line. 23. Shooting: 3 in the D Set up goals using cones and throw down lines (1 coach per goal) Coach stands at top of circle with all the balls. Have one goalkeeper and one defender. Divide other players into groups of 3. First group of 3 goes into the circle as attackers. Attackers spread out in the circle. Coach throws ball in to one attacker who can either shoot or pass to a free team mate who must shoot. All 3 attackers ready for rebounds or deflections. Only one direct pass allowed in the circle before shot is taken. Change defender and goalkeeper (if available) frequently. 24. Shooting: Shooting Circuit Set up boxes as shown using cones. 6 players per box - 4 attackers, 2 goalies. Attackers dribble the length through the cones. (S)he must then shoot before the ball goes through the final set of cones. After the shot on goal, the attacker becomes the goalie and the goalie joins the line beside him as an attacker. The same thing is taking place in the opposite direction.
Shooting: Back out to the Top Coach Notes Shooting: Deflection Drill Coach Notes Age: 1st class up, throw down lines (if necessary) Coaching Points: Focus on carrying the ball at speed right to the end line before cutting across into the circle and giving a strong pass to the shooter at the top of the circle. Shooter should scan to be aware of their position before receiving the ball. Progress to including defenders to put the pass and the shot under pressure. Age: 3rd class up (with a padded keeper) Coaching Points: Change shooter after 5 balls 3 rules for deflections: 1. Gut to the goal - keep stomach facing goal 2. Strong still stick - do not swing at the ball 3. Angle the stick - redirect the ball into the goal by angling the stick Shooting: Shooting Circuit Coach Notes Shooting: 3 in the D Coach Notes Age: 2nd class up Age: 1st class up Balls, sticks, throw down lines Coaching Points: Focus on quick shots on goal. Head should be up while running with the ball aware of where the goal is. Coaching Points: Focus on quick shots on goal. Good positioning in the circle. All attackers being ready for deflections and rebounds.
25. Jab Tackling: Tackle Box Set up tackle boxes with goal at each end Divide into pairs (one per tackle box) Attacker begins with the ball and tries to score in opposite goal Defender aims to prevent the attacker by jab tackling. If the defender wins the ball they then try and score in the opposite goal Begin slowly with attacker moving straight towards the defender to allow defender to practice the tackle Speed up exercise and allow attacker to try to evade defender once technique has been mastered Alternate attacking and defending players 26. Jab Tackling: Hassle from Behind Set up rectangular tackle boxes with goal at one end Divide into groups of 3 with two defenders and one attacker (one group per tackle box) Attacker begins with the ball at one corner Carries the ball up to defender A, spins around and tries to score in the goal. Defender A jabs from behind on both sides with short quick jabs aiming to cause the attacker to lose control of the ball. Defender B should be ready to execute a block tackle as soon as the attacker looses control of the ball. Change positions after a few turns. 27. Jab Tackling: Channelling Set up long rectangular tackle box with 2 goals as shown Players line up in two lines at opposite sides All balls start with red players Player A passes square pass to player B. Player B is now the attacker and Player A is the defender in 1v1 setup. Score 1 point through blue goals and 3 points through orange goals. Defender must keep to the left and slightly behind the attacker and jab tackle to stop them turning inside and scoring 3 points. Only use block tackle if sure. Players then return to end of opposite line. 28. Games and Fun: Dodge Drills Set up drills which include a variety of different dribbles such as speed dribble, then indian dribble, pull back and then speed dribble past the last cone This drill is similar to the previous one using different dribble techniques but after each cone, the player shuffles back across the cone. This simulates getting the body in front of the defender to stop them reaching for the ball
Jab Tackling: Hassle from Behind Coach Notes Jab Tackling: Tackle Box Coach Notes Age: 3rd class up Age: 1st class up Coaching Points: Good positioning on the jab tackle. Very short quick jabs from both sides and behind the attacker Be conscious of safety when tackling from behind. Coaching Points: Keep on balls of feet to allow quick movement. Lunge with left foot and remove right hand. from stick to enable greater reach. Focus on quick movement. As soon as jab is made return right hand to stick to make block tackle if necessary or carry the ball away if won. Position to the left hand side of the attacker when jabbing to stop then passing inside Keep stick low to the ground with the flat side facing upwards Games and Fun: Dodge Drills Coach Notes Age: 2nd class up Coaching Points: Use as many different dribble types as appropriate Focus on technique and building speed. Jab Tackling: Channelling Coach Notes Age: 1st class up Coaching Points: Good positioning from defender. Good decision making. Keeping attacker out at the side line and not allowing them to cross inside to the Gold Zone. Defender keeps feet close together and stays on their toes.
29. Games and Fun: Hopping the Ball Divide into pairs. One ball per pair. One player lies their stick on top of two cones on the ground and the other player tries to hop their ball over the stick. Count how many hops in one minute and then change positions. Use different techniques to hop the ball. Progress to setting it up so that the player runs towards the stick and completes the technique on the move.
Games and Fun: Hopping the Ball Coach Notes Age: 1st class up Coaching Points: Ensure that exercise can be completed without danger 1. Players move the ball slightly from left to right so that it rolls up onto their forehand stick 2. Players move the ball from right to left and roll it up onto their reverse stick 3. As reverse stick move but instead of turning the stick over as a normal reverse stick move, turn it under by lifting the left elbow and dropping the right hand
