3 ABOUT FIFA CLUB WORLD CUP INTERCONTINENTAL AND TOYOTA CUP Between 1960 and 1968, the Intercontinental Cup was a competition endorsed by UEFA and CONMEBOL and contested between the winners of the European Champions Cup and the South American Copa Libertadores. The format of play was a home-and-away series, decided by points only (the same format used by CONMEBOL to determine the winner of the Copa Libertadores final until 1987). Because of this format, a third match was needed when both teams were tied on points. From 1969 to 1979, the Intercontinental Cup continued as a two-leg competition between the UEFA and the CONMEBOL club champions. However, it later adopted the European standard method to decide the winner by adding the goals of both matches to the aggregate score. From 1980 up until 2004, the competition was held as single matches in Tokyo or Yokohama, Japan. It was renamed the Toyota Cup, after its sponsor. FIFA CLUB WORLD CUP The first FIFA Club World Cup was held in 2000 in Brazil with the participation of the club champions from all six confederations (AFC, CAF, CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, OFC and UEFA). In addition to those six teams, two additional competitors were invited: Real Madrid CF from Spain as the Toyota Cup winner of 1998 and the Brazilian host team, Corinthians, who went on to win the trophy. In 2005 the Toyota Cup merged with the FIFA Club World Cup. This competition has since been played under the auspices of FIFA between the club champions from the six Confederations (UEFA and CONMEBOL s representatives entering the competition in the semi-finals). From 2007, the host s top team has also been invited to participate. In 2007, as a Japanese team won the AFC Champions League, the highest placed non-japanese teams of the AFC Champions League met in a playoff for the quarter-finals with the OFC representative. After four consecutive years of the FIFA Club World Cup being held in Japan, the competition was awarded to the United Arab Emirates for two years before returning to Japan for another two editions. In 2013 and 2014, host nation Morocco provided a superb new setting for the FIFA Club World Cup until the tournament returned once again to Japan for 2015 and Now, after hosting a successful 2017 tournament, UAE looks forward to welcoming the club champions back to United Arab Emirates for the FIFA Club World Cup UAE

4 The FIFA Club World Cup is back for its 15th edition! Catch all the action of the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2018 in Al Ain and Abu Dhabi from 12th to 22nd December. The eight thrilling matches will take place at Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium, Al Ain, and Zayed Sports City Stadium, Abu Dhabi. As champions of the UAE League, Al Ain FC will be joined by the champions of the six confederations: Real Madrid CF, the champions of UEFA s Champions League, CD Guadalajara the champions of North America s CONCACAF Champions League, Team Wellington FC, the champions of Oceania s OFC Champions League, Asia s AFC Champions League, Africa s CAF Champions League and South America s CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores. 6

5 FOOTBALL FACTS AND FIGURES Football is the most popular sport in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and occupies a special place in the hearts of its people. The UAE is tremendously proud to be hosting the FIFA Club World Cup UAE This will be the seventh FIFA tournament organised by the UAE after hosting the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2003, the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2009, the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2009, 2010 and 2017, and the FIFA U-17 World Cup The UAE became a member of FIFA in 1972 and joined the Asian and Arab football confederations in In 1996, the UAE successfully staged its first international football tournament, the AFC Asian Cup, which is set to return to the UAE in It also hosted the Gulf Cup in 1982, 1994 and The UAE men s national football team was formed forty years ago and, in this period, they have achieved some impressive results. The Whites, as they are known by their fans, have twice won the Gulf Cup of Nations, reaching the semi-finals ten times. Their first triumph came on home soil in 2007, after defeating Oman in the final. They won the tournament again in 2013, defeating Iraq in Bahrain. The team were also runners-up on three occasions in 1986, 1988, Without a doubt, one of the team s greatest achievements to date was qualifying for the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy. Over the years, the UAE s national team has made a total of eight appearances in the AFC Asian Cup, progressing to the semi-finals three times. In the most recent edition of the AFC Asian Cup in 2015, the team inspired the nation by making it through to the semi-finals of the tournament, losing to the eventual tournament winners, Australia. They finished third in the tournament, tying their previous highest tournament finish in The team is excited to be hosting the next edition of the AFC Asian Cup 2019 in the UAE, from 5 January to 1 February,

6 ZAYED SPORTS CITY STADIUM Zayed Sports City Stadium Situated in the nation s capital city of Abu Dhabi, the stadium at Zayed Sports City is the largest sports venue in the entire UAE, with a seating capacity of 45,000. The stadium was created by the late President of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, to deliver a dedicated sports complex capable of hosting major Arab and international sporting events. Completed in 1980, the total complex occupies 109 hectares, exclusively dedicated to sport and supporting facilities. 7 HAZZA BIN ZAYED STADIUM Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium is an iconic, state-of-the-art football venue constructed in accordance with the requirements of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA). It was designed to enhance the exposure and promote the vision of UAE sports and serves as home to the Al Ain Sports & Cultural Club. Inaugurated in January 2014, the stadium promptly won the Stadium of the Year 2014 award from the world s largest review of global athletic venues. It was shortlisted the following year for a design award at the prestigious World Architecture Festival. Constructed strategically in the Towayya area of Al Ain, near key highway routes leading to Abu Dhabi and Dubai, Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium is the centerpiece of a multi-purpose development area extending over 500,000 square meters, featuring hotel accommodations, restaurants, shops and leisure facilities. Interesting Fact The stadium facade was constructed with fabric elements to resemble the familiar trunk of a palm tree. The exterior is fitted with LED lights that can illuminate the building in 15 different content modes to reflect different moods or national colors. On the top of the stadium roof, 200 floodlights are fixed to provide the illumination for after-dark games

8 OFFICIAL MASCOT Meet Dhabi, the Official Mascot of the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2018 is Dhabi, a friendly young Arabian gazelle who lives in the mountains of Abu Dhabi. The English translation of Abu Dhabi actually means Father of Gazelles. Dhabi is full of life and energy, lives for football and is excited that the UAE is yet again hosting such an important tournament. The Official Mascot will be showing off his football skills and aims to get everyone involved in the 2018 tournament. 15

9 COMMUNITY INITIATIVES FIFA Club World Cup Experience The FIFA Club World Cup Experience will tour the UAE for over 150 days leading up to the tournament. From June to December 2018, the mobile activation will travel to 50 locations across the UAE, including malls, airports, schools, universities, sports academies, corporate offices, festivals and other celebrations. A challenge will be sent to communities to determine the most skilled footballers across different age groups and genders. More than 10,000 fans are expected to participate, posting their highest scores and hoping to be crowned Ultimate Hero. School Engagement As part of the FIFA Club World Cup Experience tour, the search for the Ultimate Hero will be launched through the youth community. The tour will visit over 30 schools, universities and sports academies, challenging over 5,000 youngsters of all ages to compete and test their skills. 17
