UNITED The match on Sept. 11, 2016 at Red Bull Arena began with a memorial ceremony for the 15th anniversary of 9/11. It ended in a wild 2-2 draw that saw New York head into the 89th minute up 2-0 before D.C. United clawed back to tie the match five minutes into second-half stoppage time. Gonzalo Veron opened the scoring with a brave header on the goal line following a penetrating run from Sacha Kljestan, and Bradley Wright-Phillips added his MLS-leading 18th goal of the season in the second half, pounding a shot past DC keeper Bill Hamid on the break. It looked like that would be more than enough to give the Red Bulls the three points that would have landed them atop the Eastern Conference standings. Of course, in the Atlantic Cup, looks can be deceiving. First, Steve Birnbaum pulled a goal back in the 89th minute, slotting home in the 18-yard box. Then, Lamar Neagle put the finishing touch on the comeback late in stoppage time by bundling the ball in following a corner kick. 5 NewYorkRedBulls.com 5

Despite the quick turnaround, Gulbrandsen found himself making his New York debut the following day, replacing Bradley Wright-Phillips in the 88th minute of th Red Bulls 1-0 win over the Colorado Rapids. After getting play time in his first MLS game off the bench against Colorado, Gulbrandsen was able to quick acclimate himself to the system and earned his first career MLS start on the road against Seattle. Gulbrandsen played 57 minutes and generated one shot against the Sounders. Gulbrandsen, 24, joins New York on year-long loan from FC Red Bull Salzburg. KLJESTAN NAMED CAPTAIN Following the trade of Dax McCarty to the Chicago Fire, Sacha Kljestan was named captain by head coach Jesse Marsch. Kljestan is entering his 11th professional season, and third since returning to MLS with the Red Bulls after three and a half years playing for RSC Anderlecht in Belgium. ROYER GETS IT ROLLING The big signing of Summer 2016, Danny Royer, got the Red Bulls going in week 1, scoring off of a header from seven yards out to tie the match in Atlanta. Royer, who joined New York on a transfer from FC Midtjylland, had one goal and one assist in six appearances last season. ROBLES RECORDS ANOTHER Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles continues to rewrite the history books, setting another all-time MLS mark on March 11 against Colorado. With an appearance against the Rapids, Robles broke the league s all-time mark for consecutive regular season appearances with his 142 nd. Robles surpasses previous record holder, Chris Klein. Robles has started and played a full 90 minutes in 145 consecutive regular season games. The midfielder finished the regular season with 20 assists, becoming just the second player in league history to reach the 20-assist plateau. For comparison, 10 of Henry s 14 assists in 2014 were primary. Kljestan started 2017 with an assist on opening day against Atlanta, serving up a corner kick for a Danny Royer header. With an assist against Houston to raise his Red Bull total to 36, Kljestan moved into a three-way tie for second place in club history. GOALS IN BUNCHES Once the Red Bulls offense got going in 2016, it proved tough to slow down. New York scored goals in quick succession in six games last year. Against Montreal, Bradley Wright-Phillips and Sean Davis struck five minutes apart, on either side of half time, to put the game away, as Davis goal pushed the scoreline to 3-1. The Red Bulls goals against LA (8/7) came just six minutes apart, with Davis strike following up Veron s run and chip of the goalkeeper. The Red Bulls struck twice with Wright-Phillips and Ronald Zubar finding the back of the net in the 20th and 23rd minutes to break open the third NY Derby. It was the fourth time this season that the Red Bulls have scored two goals in five minutes or less. Most notably in the 7-0 win against New York City FC, Wright-Phillips scored twice at the end of the first half, in the 42 nd minute and again in stoppage time. New York then got two goals in five minutes at the start of the second half, with goals in the 51st and 56th minutes. The sixth and seventh goals also came back-to-back, in the 83 rd and 89 th minutes. The Red Bulls put away three in 10 minutes in a 3-2 win over Orlando, including two from BWP just six minutes apart. Wright-Phillips also completed the fastest hat trick in league history with his second and third goals in the 25th and 27 th minutes in a 3-0 win over Toronto FC in May. Felipe struck twice inside seven minutes to tie and then win a match against Houston with a strike from outside the box and then a dazzling free kick goal. The Red Bulls scored in the 53rd, 58th, and 70th minutes to jump out to a 3-0 lead over Columbus. NOT A TYPO The New York Red Bulls seven-goal explosion against New York City FC set a new franchise record for goals scored in a single game. The performance also tied an MLS record for largest margin of victory, tying an LA Galaxy 8-1 win from 1998 and a 7-0 Chicago Fire win in The Red Bulls are just the fourth team in league history to score seven or more goals in a match. New York entered the day with a -6 goal differential and left Yankee Stadium with a +1 differential and the most goals scored in the Eastern Conference this season.
