3 SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC vs PHILADELPHIA UNION CENTURYLINK FIELD, Seattle, Wash. April 16, 216 (WEEK 7, MLS Game #62) 7 p.m. PT (JOEtv; TCN-Phi) Clubs at opposite end of their conference standings face off when Seattle Sounders FC play host to Philadelphia Union on Saturday evening at CenturyLink Field. Sounders FC sit at the foot of the Western Conference, coming off their first win of the season with a 1-1 draw at the Houston Dynamo last Sunday afternoon. Union enter the weekend in a tie for the top spot in the Eastern Conference, returning to their early-season winning ways in a 2-1 home win against Orlando City SC last Friday at Talen Energy Stadium. REFEREE: Drew Fischer. Sounders FC have won the last two meetings between the teams at CenturyLink Field, including a 2-1 win May 3, 214 in the only encounter between the clubs that season. Union have never lost to Sounders FC at PPL Park. After a 3-1 Philadelphia win vs. Seattle in the grand opening of the new stadium in 21, the teams played to draws in their next two meetings in Chester, before Union claimed a 1- win last June 24 in the only meeting between the clubs. Coaches record: Sigi Schmid vs. PHI: P8 W3 L2 T2 Jim Curtin vs. SEA: P1 W1 L T SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC Seattle Sounders FC followed a first victory on the season with a first draw, hitting for a late equalizer for a 1-1 draw with the Houston Dynamo on Sunday afternoon at BBVA Compass Stadium. Sounders FC are in 1th place in the Western Conference with 4 points from 5 games. LAST MATCH The Dynamo took the lead after 35 minutes, when a Jalil Anibaba pass found Giles Barnes completely unmarked in the center of the area and he casually looped an effort over Stefan Frei in the Seattle goal. But Sounders FC hit for the leveler with the last kick of the game, as Oalex Anderson's fizzing cross wasn't cleared and center back Chad Marshall was left with an easy finish deep into stoppage time. Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid made three changes to the team that defeated the Montréal Impact 1- at CenturyLink Field. Joevin Jones came into the back four for Dylan Remick, and Jordan Morris started in place of Nelson Haedo Valdez. SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC ( ): Stefan Frei - Tyrone Mears, Brad Evans, Chad Marshall, Joevin Jones (Dylan Remick 71) - Osvaldo Alonso - Clint Dempsey, Cristian Roldan - Aaron Kovar (Oalex Anderson 63), Jordan Morris (Herculez Gomez 79), Andreas Ivanschitz. TEAM NEWS Sounders FC recorded a second consecutive result with the last-gasp draw at the Dynamo, after opening the season with three consecutive losses. We took the game to them in the second half, said Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid. Our movement was quicker and we were better. At halftime, I told them they didn t come out playing like they were rested and fit. Said defender Brad Evans: Ties come in different forms. You go up, then you give one away, you have a different feeling. When you go down, then grab one in the 9th, 94th-plus it almost feels like a win. You grasp on to something, you hold on to it and you get home with a point. MLS GAME INFORMATION

4 It was a fourth consecutive game where Sounders FC have scored a single goal. They have scored four goals for the year, tied for third-fewest in MLS this season (with Red Bulls; Colorado and Columbus have 3 each). Chad Marshall scored his first goal in nearly two years, since May 3, 214, literally with the final kick of the game for the equalizer. We re happy to take a point give the way the game went, Marshall said. We look to carry the momentum from these last two games into Philly next week and hopefully get a good result at home. Oalex Anderson came off the substitutes bench for a fourth time in five matches this season and helped create the game-tying goal, though he was not credited with an assist (three of Sounders FC s four goals this season have been unassisted). He has marvelous talent and marvelous speed, Schmid said. Herculez Gomez made his Sounders FC debut, coming off the substitutes bench for the final 11 minutes. He replaced Jordan Morris, who returned to the first XI after a one-match absence. Any time you come off the bench, you want to be a difference maker, said Gomez. Nelson Valdez missed out on a match for the first time this season, suffering a leg injury in training that kept him out. PHILADELPHIA UNION Philadelphia Union returned to their winning ways, hitting for a late game-winner for a 2-1 win against Orlando City SC on Friday evening at Talen Energy Stadium. Union are in a tie for first place in the Eastern Conference with 9 points from 5 games. LAST MATCH Union took the lead just two minutes in, when C.J. Sapong capitalized on a poor clearance attempt of Keegan Rosenberry's cross back across the box from the left and Sapong slotted the ball into goal. Orlando City SC leveled terms just a few minutes before halftime when Adrian Winter finished a breakaway chance off Kevin Molino's pass from inside box. The game appeared destined to be a draw, but Union playmaker Tranquillo Barnetta stepped up to take a free kick in the 9th minute, and curled a master-class effort off the underside of the bar, leaving goalkeeper Joe Bendik rooted to his line. Union manager Jim Curtin made no changes to the team that fell by the game s only goal in a loss to the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park. Vincent Nogueira came into the midfield in place of Warren Creavalle, and Sebastien Le Toux started in place of Ilsinho. PHILADELPHIA UNION ( ): Andre Blake - Keegan Rosenberry, Ken Tribbett, Richard Marquez, Fabinho - Brian Carroll, Vincent Nogueira - Sebastien Le Toux (Fabian Herbers 63), Roland Alberg (Tranquillo Barnetta 63), Chris Pontius (Leo Fernandes 85) - C.J. Sapong. TEAM NEWS Union won their third match in the last four outings with the last-minute victory against Orlando City, their second win in as many games this season at Talen Energy Stadium. Union have hit for multiple goals in each of their three victories. They have been shut out at the attacking end in each of their two defeats. Tranquillo Barnetta came off the substitutes bench for a second consecutive match after missing the opening three games with a left knee injury and scored his first goal this year, his second goal in 13 MLS appearances. I always try these but it s usually not going to happen, Barnetta said. I m happy that it goes in tonight. There was a bit of controversy when the Professional Referees Organization said that following a review the goal should not have been allowed. Union placed a wall of their players behind the Orlando City wall defending the free kick. It provided a little bit of a different look, Curtin said. We checked with the linesman the first time we did it when Tranquillo hit it over to make sure it wasn t offside. The second time we executed it well. We were fortunate to get two fouls from the same look. Said Paul Rejer of PRO: At PRO we have discussed this tactic at our camps on numerous occasions; it has been covered on our website. Our officials have been instructed that the referee should be proactive by clearly warning the offside players that they will be penalized if they remain in offside positions. [Referee Jair] Marrufo does this, however assistant referee Peter Balciunas does not raise his flag and the goal is incorrectly allowed. C.J. Sapong scored his third goal of the season, tied for fourth place in the MLS Golden Boot standings after the weekend, all three goals coming over the last three matches. Sebastien Le Toux made his first start of the season, coming into a wide right midfield role and playing 63 minutes. Le Toux had come off the substitutes bench in each of the opening four matches. Vincent Nogueira returned to the starting lineup, making his first appearance since starting in the seasonopening 2- loss at FC Dallas, again playing the full 9 minutes in a deep-lying central midfield role. Did we create enough chances? I thought we created a decent amount of chances, but you can always create more. It just takes that one fluky goal - maybe the one at the end of the Houston match will do that - to break the dam for you. Forward Clint Dempsey: On the club debut of Herculez Gomez: I thought he did a great job. He came in, made some runs in behind their backline, made some dangerous crosses, almost found me with a header - I thought he was dangerous when he came on. Defender Brad Evans: On being versatile: I have played a lot of positions here. I ve scored quite a few goals, but now I find myself on defense. It s a natural switch that happened. On playing through adversity: We ve gone through rough patches here, and it s all about putting your head down, doing things you know how to do well and sticking to your game. Sometimes when you re in a rut you get stuck trying to do too much. When you get back to the basics, we find ourselves on the right side of results.

A dependable defensive midfielder, Carroll, 34, has been in MLS since 23. In addition to the Union, Carroll has played with D.C. United and Columbus Crew SC. From , every team Carroll played for reached the playoffs. Carroll will join Kyle Beckerman (383), Steve Ralston (378), Brad Davis (371), Jeff Cunningham (365) and Davy Arnaud (351) as outfield players to reach that number in MLS history. Goalkeepers Kevin Hartman (416) and Nick Rimando (398) have also reached that feat. The No. 11 overall pick in the 23 MLS SuperDraft, Carroll did not make his MLS debut until 24. The wait was worth it, as Carroll started 26 games and helped lead D.C. United to their fourth MLS Cup, defeating Kansas City Wizards 3-2. Carroll also helped lead United to back-to-back Supporters Shields trophies in 26 and 27. He joined Columbus in 28 and immediately helped the club win it s first-ever MLS Cup, defeating New York Red Bulls 3-1. Carroll also helped the club secure it s third-ever Supporters Shield the following year. He joined the Union prior to the 211 season and helped the club secure it s first, and only, trip to the MLS Cup playoffs. 2

37 QUOTEBOOK Head coach Jim Curtin opening statement: First and foremost, extremely proud of our guys for the performance [against Orlando]. I thought that Orlando was a good team. It was a tough task, but I think you saw from minute 1, getting the goal early and C.J. pressuring their goalkeeper early, all the way up to minute 9, we put in a full effort for all 9 minutes. So, very proud of my guys in that regard. When we looked at the schedule in the beginning of the year four out of our first six on the road in very difficult places to play so, happy with how we ve gotten through the first five games. Curtin on Ilsinho s status: He s getting better, the hamstring is coming along. We re optimistic that he ll be at least available for selection this week. But, at the same time, we need to be smart: the travel, the turf what s best for him, what s best for our group? He s one of our most talented guys so we have to monitor it, be smart. But, again, we re itching to get him back because he was getting going, getting into a little bit of a rhythm. So, any time you have a little bit of a setback with a hamstring, it s difficult. He, for what it s worth, trained with the guys in the pre-game warmups of the Maryland game yesterday in the stadium, which was positive, just as a neutral. He doesn t have any pain in that, it s the longer runs when he opens up his legs, he still feels it a little bit so it s not a hundred percent yet. Curtin on the environment in Seattle: It s difficult as a coach, it s a helpless feeling on the sidelines over there because any message you try to get out is overruled by their crowd; 45-5,, whatever it is, it s incredibly loud. You really have to have your game plan fully intact, and the guys have to work more off of physical cues. So, you know, if a guy s stepping, how do you move off of him? There s not a lot of room for verbal cues there just because it s deafeningly loud. Especially early, managing the first 15 minutes is critical to try to take the crowd out of it a bit because, once it gets going, and if they get an early goal, it s as tough a place as there is to play. They re used to the turf, it s a little bit new for us a lot of challenging things that go into it. You can t really prepare young players to do it, you have to go through it. So, again, it ll be a tough challenge for some of our younger guys, but one that hopefully will be a big step in their development, and you ll call upon your senior players to get them through the tough moments on the field. But, communication is almost impossible verbally at the stadium. Curtin on goalkeeper Andre Blake: He s been special, there s no doubt about it. We re very happy with his performance not only in this game, making the big save at the end for us to preserve all three points. Again, I ve said, it s a two-point save at the very end there, it s an incredible save that he makes. So, we re happy with that part of things. Oka Nikolov has done an incredible job with him, with all our goalkeepers to be honest. We ll still work to push Andre he s young, he s still getting better each game but it does make you feel confident that there s a guy back there that can save what he s supposed to save and makes the big saves too to win you a game, and win you points. Curtin on Vincent Nogueira, Brian Carroll and Warren Creavalle all available for Saturday s game: Warren comes off of playing some very good games. Had, obviously, the unfortunate red card versus Chicago, which is difficult. He s learned from it, he s been hard on himself about it, but his play in training has been excellent. So, it s, again, good problems to have. Is there a rotation, is there a, with the distance, the travel, the turf, is it a game where you re smart with BC, who s put in a heck of a great five games. We actually have options to juggle things and rest. I m not a guy, as you guys know, that likes I like consistency of lineups, I think it s important. But, If you ve learned something in your first year as a head coach, to use all 34 guys is critical excuse me, 34, I wish 28 guys is critical, and to have that rotation is important. It might not seem like it now but as you get into August and September, the minutes start to wear. Is it an option where it s Warren and Vince? IS it BC and Warren? Whatever team we play against we have to choose what matchup is best, what makes the most sense for our group. To get three points on the day is obviously priority No. 1, but you do have to have an eye on managing your guys in a smart way. As you guys have seen, there s tons of injuries throughout the league right now, so depth of squad is critical, and I m happy that we have a deep team. 3
