DFB CUP FINAL TOP FACTS Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Dortmund meet in the DFB Cup final for the first time. The finalists have met 92 times competitively in the Bundesliga era. BVB lead the head-to-head (W44, D16, L32) and won the most recent clash (3-1 on matchday 29). The sides have met in the DFB Cup on four occasions. The Eagles won the first two (6-2 H 1968/69 and 3-1 A 1978/79), with Borussia progressing in the latest two (2-1 H 2007/08 and 1-0 A 2013/14). Frankfurt have lifted the DFB Cup on four occasions (1974, 1975, 1981 and 1988) only Bayern (18), Bremen (6) and Schalke (5) have won it more often. The side from Hesse are back in the final for the first time since 2005/06, when they lost 1-0 to Bayern. This will be their seventh DFB Cup Final. Dortmund are contesting the showpiece event for the ninth time and have lifted the crown on three occasions (1965, 1989 and 2012). BVB have lost each of the last three finals they are the first team to lose three on the bounce. On a positive note, Tuchel s men are the first team to reach four consecutive DFB Cup finals. They ve reached it as many times since 2014 (4) as in the previous 50 seasons ( ) combined. BVB have won each of their last seven DFB Cup semis a record. Bayern are the only other side to have managed this feat ( ). Frankfurt are just the second side to have needed three penalty shootouts to reach the final. VfB Stuttgart also needed three in 1996/97 they beat Energie Cottbus 2-0 in the final. Eintracht have scored just five goals in the competition this season (exc. penalty shootouts). No side has reached the showpiece event having scored so few in the Bundesliga era (before 1963 the competition often consisted of significantly fewer rounds). Page 3

Dortmund haven t lost any of their last 11 DFB Cup fixtures that ended after 90 or 120 minutes (games settled on penalties are officially noted as draws), equalling a club record first set between 2010 and Eintracht Frankfurt haven t scored in any of their last three competitive games in the Olympiastadion. Their last strike there came in August 2013 (Alexander Meier in a 6-1 loss vs. Hertha BSC). Marco Reus is still waiting for his first major-trophy success. He s got three DFB Cup runners-up medals, was part of the BVB side beaten in the 2013 Champions League final and has finished second in the Bundesliga on three occasions. Reus, Lukasz Piszczek, Marcel Schmelzer and Pierre- Emerick Aubameyang are in line to contest their fourth successive DFB Cup final only Manuel Neuer ( ) has previously managed this. Marco Russ and Alexander Meier are the only current SGE players who were involved in the 2006 DFB Cup final (1-0 loss vs. Bayern). 4,046 days have elapsed since that defeat. Lukas Hradecky has saved 25 efforts during this season s DFB Cup a competition high. Only 10 of the last 18 penalties he has faced in the tournament (inc. shootouts) have been converted. He saved five of those 18 penalties. Even if he doesn t feature, a Dortmund win would see Mario Götze become the second player to lift the DFB Cup on multiple occasions with two different clubs Oliver Reck is the only person to have achieved the feat to date (twice with Schalke and twice with Bremen). Niko Kovac won the DFB Cup as a player with Bayern in 2002/03 and now has the chance to taste success in the competition from the touchline. Only Jupp Heynckes (1973 as a player and 2013 as a head coach), Thomas Schaaf (twice as a player and three times as a coach), Aki Schmidt (1965; 1970) and Ludwig Janda (1942; 1956) have managed to win it as both to date. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored in both of BVB s games against SGE this term both were assisted by Ousmane Dembele. The duo also combined for Dortmund s second goal in the semi-final vs. Bayern. Aubameyang has been involved in nine goals in nine competitive games vs. Eintracht (7 goals + 2 assists). Niko and Robert Kovac were born in Berlin. Niko was the only one to play for Hertha BSC in the Olympiastadion, though ( , ). Page 4

HEAD-TO-HEAD: FRANKFURT DORTMUND Competitive clashes since 1963/64* Competition Meetings SGE Wins D BVB Wins Bundesliga DFB Cup Total *Games settled on penalties are officially noted as draws This will be the 93rd competitive clash between the sides in the Bundesliga era. Two of the last three meetings have been won by Eintracht. Dortmund prevailed in the latest one (3-1 H in the Bundesliga on 15th April) and lead the overall head-to-head (W44, D16, L32). The sides have met in the DFB Cup on four occasions. Eintracht won the first two (6-2 H 1968/69 and 3-1 A 1978/79), with BVB triumphing in the others (2-1 H 2007/08 and 1-0 A 2013/14). This will be the first DFB Cup final between the sides. Extra time is unlikely the DFB Cup clashes to date were all settled in normal time and none of the last nine league meetings have been drawn (3 SGE wins; 6 BVB wins). The last draw in this fixture came in September 2012 (3-3 in Frankfurt). Page 5

DFB CUP FINAL MAIN FEATURES Frankfurt back in Berlin after 11 years Eintracht Frankfurt are competing the DFB Cup final for the first time since 2005/06, when they lost 1-0 to Bayern. They have, however, lost each of the last three. In 2016 they lost to Bayern on penalties (4-2), Wolfsburg were the champions in 2015 (3-1) and FCB claimed bragging rights again in 2014 (2-0 a.e.t.). They are the first side to lose three successive DFB Cup finals. 7 BVB with Final trauma? Borussia Dortmund have reached a final in each of the last five years and have lost each of the last four: 2013 (2-1 vs. FCB in the Champions League), 2014 (2-0 a.e.t. vs. FCB in the DFB Cup), 2015 (3-1 vs. VfL in the DFB Cup) and 2016: (4-3 on penalties vs. FCB in the DFB Cup). Their last victory in a final came in 2012 (5-2 vs. FCB in the DFB Cup). BVB unbeaten in 11 DFB Cup games a record Dortmund haven t lost any of their last 11 DFB Cup fixtures that ended after 90 or 120 minutes (games settled on penalties are officially noted as draws), equalling a club record first set between 2010 and 2012 (inc. lifting the trophy in 2012). If they remain unbeaten this weekend, Thomas Tuchel will nab Jürgen Klopp s record. Minimalists Frankfurt reach the final Eintracht have scored just five goals in the competition this season (exc. penalty shootouts). No side has reached the showpiece event having scored so few in the Bundesliga era (before the 1963 the competition often consisted of significantly fewer rounds). Eintracht Frankfurt a comparison Borussia Dortmund 5 Goals Scored 11 3 Goals Conceded 4 2 Clean Sheets 2 51 Shots Shots Faced 55 BVB have scored over twice as many goals and taken almost twice as many shots (98-51). They have, however, been breached more often (4-3) despite facing fewer efforts (55-87). Page 7

Eintracht s penalty heroes The Eagles are just the second side to have needed three penalty shootouts to reach the final. VfB Stuttgart also needed three in 1996/97 they beat Energie Cottbus, who were managed by Joachim Löw back then, 2-0 in the final. Current Frankfurt sporting director Fredi Bobic was involved in that clash. Cup keeper Hradecky Frankfurt goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky has been excellent in the DFB Cup this season and is one of the main reasons that SGE have reached the final. He s saved a competition-high 25 shots this season. He s kept out 89% of the shots on his goal. Only 10 of the last 18 penalties he has faced in the tournament (inc. shootouts) have been converted. He saved 5 of those 18 penalties (3 were missed). Hradecky kept out Gladbach s last two penalties in the semi-final shootout (from Andreas Christensen and Djibril Sow). The Finn was part of the Esbjerg fb side that won the Danish Cup in 2012/13. Russ and Meier are back after 11 years Marco Russ and Alexander Meier are the only current SGE players who were involved in the 2006 DFB Cup final (1-0 loss vs. Bayern). 4,046 days have elapsed since that defeat. Former Dortmund man Christian Wörns currently holds the honour of waiting the longest between DFB Cup final appearances (5,425 days between 1993 and 2008). Page 8

Reus after his first major honour Marco Reus has triumphed in the Super Cup twice, but other than that the cupboard is bare for the BVB man. He s finished second in the Bundesliga on three occasions. Reus has three DFB Cup runners-up medals. He lost the 2013 Champions League final. The attacker missed the 2014 World Cup due to injury. He could claim his first major honour four days before his 28th birthday. Reus has been directly involved in seven goals in his last five DFB Cup outings (4 goals + 3 assists). BVB quartet could make history Marco Reus, Lukasz Piszczek, Marcel Schmelzer and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are in line to contest their fourth successive DFB Cup finals only Manuel Neuer ( ) has previously managed this. They are, therefore, at risk of becoming the first players to lose four consecutive DFB Cup finals. No player has ever lost more than four DFB Cup finals. Schalke s Ernst Kalwitzki, Ernst Kuzorra, Fritz Szepan, Hans Bornemann and Otto Schweisfurth are the only players to hold this dubious honour currently (all 1935, 1936, 1941, 1942). Page 9

Who will claim their first major honour? Niko Kovac has reached the DFB Cup final in his first full season in Germany as a head coach. He lifted the trophy alongside his brother Robert during his playing career with FC Bayern in 2002/03 (3-1 vs. Kaiserslautern) and could now win it from the touchline. Only Jupp Heynckes (1973 as a player and 2013 as a head coach), Thomas Schaaf (twice as a player and three times as a coach), Aki Schmidt (1965; 1970) and Ludwig Janda (1942; 1956) have managed to win it as both to date. It would also be a maiden triumph as a head coach for BVB s Thomas Tuchel. He guided the Mainz U19s to the national title in 2009, and was the assistant coach as VfB Stuttgart won the same title in He s lost both of his finals as Borussia boss to date. Bayern were victorious on each occasion (4-3 on pens. in the DFB Cup final and 2-0 in the Super Cup; both 2016). First DFB Cup final between SGE and BVB There have been 73 DFB Cup finals to date and this will be the 64th different match-up to contest the showpiece event. This will be the fifth time that the sides meet in the competition. The Eagles won the first two clashes, with Dortmund triumphing in the latest two. Eintracht won 6-2 in the first round of the 1969 competition. They ve only scored six goals in a DFB Cup match against a fellow Bundesliga side on one other occasion (6-0 vs. Schalke in 2005). Frankfurt claimed a 3-1 victory over Dortmund in the Westfalenstadion in the last 16 of the 1978/79 edition. BVB went 1-0 down in the second round back in 2007/08, but turned it round to beat Marco Russ, Alex Meier and Co Dortmund won a quarter final in 2014 courtesy of a solitary strike from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Extra time has never been needed to settle a tie between the sides. Page 10

Kovac brothers heading home The game will be special for Eintracht coaching duo Niko and Robert Kovac, who were both born in Berlin. Niko, the older of the two, was the only one to represent Hertha. He was contracted to BSC between 1991/92 and 1996 (136 second-tier outings) and re-joined them in 2003, making 75 Bundesliga appearances (8 goals) before linking up with RB Salzburg in Frankfurt sporting director Fredi Bobic played for Hertha BSC between July 2003 and June He scored eight goals in 54 topflight appearances for the Berlin side. Rode spent four years with SGE Sebastian Rode, who was born in Seeheim-Jugenheim just south of Frankfurt played for Eintracht between 2010 and He made 61 Bundesliga appearances for the Eagles (2 goals). He signed for Bayern in summer 2014 and joined BVB in Bobic formerly of BVB Frankfurt sporting director Fredi Bobic represented Dortmund between 1999 and He scored 17 goals for them in 56 Bundesliga appearances, before heading to Bolton Wanderers on loan in 2001 and signing permanently for Hannover in summer He was part of Borussia s 2001/02 title-winning side, despite only making three appearances in the first half of the 2001/02 season. He has kept out five penalties in the competition this season. Roman Bürki rescued BVB during the semi vs. Bayern by making some stunning stops and has been impressive during this season s competition. 16 Timothy Chandler vs. Lukasz Piszczek Frankfurt right back Timothy Chandler has often been deployed in a more attacking role this season, especially when the Eagles opt for a back three. He s claimed two assists in the Cup this season, including for Taleb Tawatha s opener in the semi. Lukasz Piszczek hasn t been involved in a goal in this season s competition but experience is on his side, as are superior challenge success and pass completion rates. 17 Michael Hector vs. Marc Bartra Niko Kovac should be able to call upon Jamaican Michael Hector again after injury issues. The youngster was sent off for two bookable offences during the first-round tie in Magdeburg and received a straight red one week later, on his Bundesliga debut vs. Schalke. Marc Bartra should also be on his way back, having hurt his hand during the bomb attack on the BVB bus. He averages 125 touches per 90 minutes in this season s competition. 18 Omar Mascarell vs. Julian Weigl Omar Mascarell is one of the signings of the summer. He joined the Eagles from Real Madrid, who inserted a buy-back clause into the deal. He has won roughly half of his challenges this season. BVB s Julian Weigl has won 64% of his challenges an excellent amount for a central midfielder. Neither player is known for their attacking capabilities, but Mascarell did claim an assist in the firstround tie vs. Magdeburg.
