1 1 v 1 Situations Attacking Out Wide and Switching The Play in The Final Third A functional practice designed to improve players passing, dribbling, movement and finishing with transition to defend Area 40 x 35 metres 4 Blues v 3 Yellows + 1 Goalkeeper Blue Team starts with possession 1 Center Midfielder passes to Wide Left (11) 2 Wide left dribbles inside and switches the play to Wide Right (7) 3 Wide Right goes 1 v 1 against Yellow defender going either way as shown in the diagram 4 Final product? i.e. pass to Forward (9) or try score themselves Center Midfielder to stay central and drop a bit, provide defensive cover. If the Yellow team win possession can they transition to attack and score in either one of the two small, can Blue team transition to defend quickly? Dribbling 1 v 1,.i.e. skills/feints to beat an opponent Quick acceleration while dribbling Quality and selection of pass Movement and communication Finishing Quick transition in both attack and defense Let the practice run freely. Make sure that players play till goal is scored, i.e. a goal is scored at either end, or ball goes out of play and are aware of the transitions. If players of good quality give them time limit to score

2 Attacking 2 v 1 with Transition to defend A functional practice designed to improve players passing, movement, finishing and transition to defend Area: 20 x 15 metres 2 Blues v 1 Yellow + 1 Goalkeeper Blue team starts with possession with the opportunity to score as seen in diagram 1 The Yellow player must try and win the ball and if successfully can score into either of the small goals as seen in diagram 2 If the Blue team loses possession of the ball they must try and regain possession (Transition) If Goalkeeper saves a shot from Blue team, the game continues with Goalkeeper and Yellow player trying to score in either of the two small goals Quality and selection of pass Body shape/back Foot/First Touch Angles and Distance of support Awareness of space and defender Attack Defender to free second player Finishing Transition to Defend can we win ball back as quickly as possible Transition to Attack can Yellow play quick pass into either small goal? Offside is in Play. Make sure Attackers drive at the Defender to create space for second player. If players of a high quality use time limit to score

3 Possession and Finishing 2 v A functional practice designed to improve players short passing with ball control, speed around the pitch and finishing with transition to defend Area: 25 x 20 metres 2 Blues v 2 Yellows + 1 White (neutral player) + 4 Reds (wall players) + 2 Goalkeepers Objective of both teams is to move the ball quickly around the playing area with speed and efficiency, exploiting the attacking opportunities that arises White player is with the team in possession at all times, while in order to score the team in possession must play a wall pass with a Red player on the outside, either side of the goal 2 minutes playing time with a 45 seconds rest. Coach during rest period (Active Rest) Have Footballs on the side to keep practice at a high intensity Quality and selection of pass Ball control/body shape/first touch/back foot Angles and Distance of support Awareness of space and defender Movement and communication Finishing Transition to Defend can we win ball back as quickly as possible? Transition to Attack can we now attack as quickly as possible? Demand high quality practice must be played at speed, i.e. passes and movement. If players of a high ability play two touch.

4 3 + 2 v Dribbling, Running with the Ball and Combinations A functional practice designed to improve players decision making in a high intensity game through dribbling, running with the ball or combinations Area 30 x 20 metres 3 Blue Players v 3 Yellow Players in the area, with 1 Yellow Player and 1 Blue Player on each end The Players score by dribbling over the end line with the ball under control, once a player dribbles over the line, the end line player of same colour is allowed to join in and attempt to dribble over the opposite end line as seen by Yellow Players in the diagram If the team out of possession wins the ball they must attack the opposite end line The Players on the end line can move along the line to take advantage of any space in anticipation of their player crossing over the line Be decisive in all actions movement, decision making, awareness and passing Know when to play 2 touch or 1 touch, Dribble or Run with the ball Combinations (Wall Pass, Over/Under laps, 3 rd Man runs) Weight and accuracy of pass Communication on and off the ball In possession can you play with your head up and recognize the moment to pass quickly through a gap Quick transition in both attack and defense Immediate reaction on winning possession, can you play forward pass? transition with speed High intensity practice play for 3 minutes with 1 minute Rest Coach during rest periods (Active Rest)

5 3 v Attacking Overload A functional practice designed to improve players awareness, passing, movement and finishing Area: 30 x 20 metres 3 Blues v 3 Yellows + 1 Goalkeeper 3 Blues start game with an 3 metre advantage on 2 Yellows to attack 1 Yellow on goal If Yellow team win the ball they must score in either of the small goals When the ball leaves the pitch game restarts with Blue team Look for players to spread out in possession and make the pitch as big as possible Encourage players to play with their head up and check shoulder so they can find the free player and be aware of pressure from opposition Angles and distance of support, can the player on the ball pass to you? End product Team Defending can the lone defender delay the attacking opposition until teammates catch up with play Communication and awareness is key Let the game flow freely, not too much stops, let the players solve the problems. The movement and communication of the players off the ball is key, take up positions away from defenders. The work rate from defending team must be quality. Look for high intensity

6 3 v 1 Possession into 1 v 1 Dribbling with Transition A functional practice designed to improve players passing, movement, decision making and 1 v 1 Dribbling Area: Pitch 40 x 20 metres, 3 v 1 12 x 12 metres 3 Blue Players v 1 Yellow Player, after a set number of passes one Blue Player can dribble out of the area and attack either goal to create a 1 v 1 with another Yellow Player, with 1 Goalkeeper in each goal If the Yellow player wins the ball in the 3 v 1 can they play to Yellow player outside to score in the goals marked with Red cones, one Blue player can leave the area to try and stop this If a Yellow player wins or Goalkeeper saves the football in the 1 v 1 can they also Transition to Attack and score through either of the goals marked with Red cones 3 v1 Possession Quality and selection of pass Body shape/first Touch/Back Foot Disguise/Change of Direction Angles and Distance of support Awareness of space and defender 1 v 1 Dribbling Positive first touch, get the ball out of your feet, Attack the defender with the ball under control Keep your head up to assess defenders position Make your move (Skill, trick or speed), Accelerate into space created, End Product Keep scores and rotate groups so both get a chance to Attack and Defend

7 Possession 3 v 1 into 4 v 4 Attack with Transition A functional practice designed to improve players passing, movement, decision making, finishing and transition to defending Area: 3 v 1 12 x 12 metres into full width of pitch 3 Blue Players v 1 Yellow player into 4 Blue players v 4 Yellow players Defenders + Goalkeeper Blue Team start with possession and complete 5 passes to make pass outside 3 v 1 area, 1 Blue player can leave 3 v 1 area to join in the Attack with 3 Blues (2 Wingers and Center Forward) If the Yellow players win the ball they must try to pass the ball into the yellow player in the 3 v 1 Area, the 2 remain Blues in this area cannot stop this, when the 4 Blues attacking lose the ball they must quickly transition to Defend to try and stop this 3 v 1 Possession Quality and selection of pass Body shape/first Touch/Back Foot Disguise/Change of Direction Angles and Distance of support Awareness of space and defender Communication between players 4 v 4 Attacking Attack Defenders at pace Penetrate opposition through 1 v 1 s or combination play Movement for crosses be unpredictable Transition to Defend quickly Movement in the box key, don t be in too early, play off defenders shoulders on blindside

If the Blue team loses possession they must quickly transition to defend with one Blue player allowed into zone two. If Goalkeeper saves a shot from the Blue team, the Goalkeeper can then transfer the ball into zone two also. Have a supply of footballs to keep the practice continually flowing Quality and selection of pass Body shape/back Foot/First Touch Angles and Distance of support Awareness of space and defender Attack Defender to free players Movement off the ball. Can you affect the player s decision making on the ball? Creativity! Finishing assess position of defender and Goalkeeper Transition to Defend can Blue team win ball back as quickly as possible Transition to Attack can Yellow team score as quickly as possible Play off sides and give each team time limit to score. Encourage freedom and focus with both teams.

9 3 v Attacking with Transition A functional practice designed to improve players passing, movement, decision making and finishing with transition to defend Area: 30 x 25 metres 3 Blues v 2 Yellows + 1 Goalkeeper in zone one, 1 Yellow + 1 Goalkeeper in zone two Blue team start with possession and try to score The Yellow team must try and win the ball and if successfully must attempt to transfer the ball into teammate in zone two who then attempts to score If the Blue team loses possession they must transition to defend with intensity and one Blue player is allowed into zone two If Goalkeeper saves shot from Blue team, the Goalkeeper can then transfer the ball into zone two also Have a supply of footballs to keep the practice continually flowing Quality and selection of pass Body shape/back Foot/First Touch Angles and Distance of support Awareness of space and defender Attack Defender to free players Finishing assess position of defender and Goalkeeper Transition to Defend can Blue team win ball back as quickly as possible Transition to Attack can Yellow team score as quickly as possible Play off sides and give each team time limit to score

10 3 v 2 Attacking with 2 v 3 Transition to Defend A functional practice designed to improve players in both attack and defense with transition Area: 40 x 30 metres 3 Blues v 2 Yellows + 2 Goalkeepers. Both Blue and Yellow resting players at the same end as seen in diagram 3 Blue players start game against 2 Yellow players and try to create a goal scoring opportunity as seen above If Yellow team win the ball they transition to attack the opposite goal If a goal is scored or the the ball leaves the pitch the Blue team must quickly transition to defend with two players staying on the pitch while 3 new Yellow players now attack Have a supply of footballs on the side to keep the practice at a high intensity Attacking: Look for players to spread out in possession and make the pitch as big as possible Encourage players to play with their head up and check shoulder so they can find the free player and be aware of pressure from opposition Angles and distance of support, can the player on the ball pass to you? Defending: Can defenders delay 3 attackers in making decisions press and cover Transition to attack counter attacks Quick transition from 3 v 2 into 2 v 3 is important concentration is vital Communication and awareness is key Let the game flow freely, not too much stops, let the players solve the problems. Demand high intensity give team time limits when on counter attack

11 3 v 2 Attacking with 3 v 4 Transition to Defend A functional practice designed to improve players awareness, passing, movement and finishing with transition to defend Area: 40 x 30 metres 3 Blues v 2 Yellows + 2 Goalkeepers. Both Blue and Yellow players at either side as seen above. 3 Blues start game against 2 Yellows and try to create a goal scoring opportunity as seen above in diagram 1 If Yellow team wins the ball they transition to attack with 2 teammates joining them in an overload as seen above in diagram 2 Rotate players to give equal opportunity to attack and defend Look for players to spread out in possession and make the pitch as big as possible Encourage players to play with their head up and check shoulder so they can find the free player and be aware of pressure from opposition Angles and distance of support, can the player on the ball pass to you? End product Quick transition to both attack and defend Communication and awareness is key Let the game flow freely, not too much stops, let the players solve the problems. The movement and communication of the players off the ball is key, take up positions away from defenders. The work rate from defending team must be quality. Look for high intensity. Give time limit for Yellow team to score on winning possession

Transition to Attack can Yellow play quick pass into either of the small goals? Offside is in Play. Introduce time limit to score if players of a high quality

13 3 v Possession & Dribbling with Transition A functional practice designed to improve players passing, decision making, movement and dribbling with transition Area: 30 x 15 metres (two zones each 15 x 15metres) 3 Blue Players v 3 Yellow Players + 2 Red Players (Target Players) Blue Team (Attacking): when in possession utilize timing, positioning and execution of passes and dribbling to play through the zones from one target player to the other. If Blue Player successfully dribbles into the other zone, one Yellow Player can enter the same zone to again create a 2 v situation. Yellow Team (Defending): attempt to win the ball and if successful maintain possession and attempt to pass or dribble to either Red Player to replicate a counter attack in a game. Red Players: help maintain positions with the team in possession with emphasis on taking up shapes to offer passing options around, ahead and behind the ball. Have a supply of footballs to keep the practice continually flowing Quality and selection of pass First touch/body shape/receive on the back foot Dribbling can players dominate in 1 v 1 s? Angles and Distance of support positional awareness Communication and movement are key! Transition to Defend can we win ball back as quickly as possible Transition to Attack width and depth as quickly as possible If players of a high ability encourage one/ two touch football in combination play. Encourage freedom and focus in both attack and defense.

14 3 v The Killer Pass with Transition to Defend A functional practice designed to improve players judgment of distance, awareness, angles and the killer pass in the final third with transition to defend Area 30 x 20 metres 2 end zones 10 x 20 metres, middle zone 10 x 20 metres 3 Yellows v 3 Blues + 3 Reds Yellow team start with possession and must decide when to transfer the ball to the red team One defender from the Blue team can go into the end zone and win the ball If Blue team wins the ball they must transfer the ball to the Red team while Yellow team transitions to defend in the middle zone and the Blue team now taking up positions in the end zone Defending team must work as a unit and try to prevent through balls Have Footballs on the side to keep practice at a high intensity Be decisive in all actions movement, decision making, awareness and passing Know when to play 2 touch or 1 touch Weight and accuracy of pass Communication In possession can you play with your head up and recognize the moment to pass quickly through a gap Quick transition in both attack and defense Immediate reaction on winning possession, can you play forward pass? transition with speed Practices must be performed at a high tempo. If players of a high standard play two touch

15 4 + 2 v Switch of Play with Transition A practice designed to improve players technique, movement, finishing and awareness of switching the play with transition Area : 30 x 30 metres 6 Blues v 6 Yellows with 4 v 4 inside the area and 4 wall players on the outside of area as seen above in diagram. Team in possession can use wall players to create overloads Blue team start with possession with emphasizes on scoring, the only way to score is by finishing in one of the four small goals protected by a Yellow wall player If Yellow team win the ball, can they quickly transition to attack with the same objectives with Blue team now transitioning to defend Have a supply of footballs to keep the practice continually flowing Let the game flow freely, not too much stops, let the players make their own decisions Width and Depth with Positional play and rotation First touch/body shape /Back Foot Awareness and communication are key! Encourage players to react quickly to the ball going out of play, can we score? Do I need to defend? Look for them to take advantage of scenarios when the opposition reacts slowly Quick transitions in both attack and defense End product Encourage players to play one/two football with emphasizes on quick switching of play after scoring. Progression if team scores they keep possession, will further improve tempo and work ethic

16 4 v 2 Possession into 1 v 1 Attacking & Overload with Transition A functional practice designed to improve players passing, positional play and 1 v 1 Dribbling, Crossing and Finishing with Transition Area half full size pitch and 12 x 12 area (4 v 2) Blue Team start the practice with emphasis on Overload to Isolate to attack in wide areas. They must complete 5 passes in (4 v 2) before playing to Central Midfielder who then switches to Winger as seen above in diagram. Blue Winger goes 1 v 1 against Yellow Defender to then attempt a cross into the box for teammates to finish. Two Blue players can leave area in attack to create overload while one Yellow player can leave area to help Team defend. If the Yellow Teams win the ball they can score by passing through the two gates marked with Yellow cones or dribble outside area in 4 v 2 if they win possession 4 v 2 Angles and distance of support Open body shape, receive on the back Quality and weight of the pass Awareness of space 1 v 1 Dribbling Positive first touch, get the ball out of your feet, Attack the Defender with the ball under control Keep your head up to assess Defenders position, Make your move (Skill, trick or speed) Decision Beat Defender on the inside and combine with Attackers or outside and cross Finishing Movement for crosses be unpredictable, don t be in the same line, play off Defenders blindside Make sure Blue players react quickly on losing possession and Transition to Defend

19 4 v 3 Attacking into 4 v 5 Transition To Defend A functional practice designed to improve players awareness, passing, movement and finishing with transition Area: 40 x 35 metres 4 Blues v 3 Yellows + 1 Goalkeeper. 2 Yellow Players either side behind goal (inactive when Blue team start with possession) Blue Team Center Attacking Midfielder (10), Wide Right (7), Wide Left (11) and Center Forward (9). Yellow Team Center Defensive Midfielder (6) and 2 Center backs, 2 full backs to join in on transition 4 Blues start game against 3 Yellows and try to create a goal scoring opportunity as seen above in diagram 1. If Yellow team win the ball they transition to attack in either small goal with 2 teammates (Full Backs) joining them in an overload as seen above in diagram 2 Have a supply of footballs on the side to keep the practice continually flowing. 20 Attacking with Goalkeeper, 2 Defenders and 1 Midfielder with transition to defend A functional practice designed to improve players Technique and Tactical Awareness when playing out from the back Area: 30 x 25 metres and 2 Gates positioned at opposite end In Blue: 1 Goalkeeper + 2 Defenders + 1 Midfielder v in Yellow: 1 Midfielder + 1 Forward 2 Target Yellow players standing in the gates Goalkeeper starts the play at all times with the ball in the middle of 6 yard box Blue Team looking to build from the back and score through any of 2 gates to Yellow players that then attack Blue goal, Blue Team must quickly transition to defend Starting positions of Center Backs edge of area creating width and space Midfield player starting centrally Quality and selection of pass First touch and body shape (opened looking to play forward) Angles and distance of support Awareness and communication Transition to defend, if Blue Team lose the ball in build up, can they win it back as quickly as possible (Pressing) Get the Yellow Team to drop off and put on limited pressure at the start to get the Blue Team comfortable in possession. Goalkeeper s role very important, Quality of passing and decision making crucial

21 Attacking Through The Thirds with Transition A practice designed to help break down a defensive set up who sit deep with transition Area: Full Width of the pitch with 4 zones and 3 Gates positioned 5 metres along halfway line 10 Blues v 9 Yellows + Goalkeeper. Players to stay in their zones up until Zone 4 Zone 1: 2 Blues v 1 Yellow, Zone 2: 5 Blues v 4 Yellows, Zone 3: 3 Blues v 4 Yellows, Zone 4: 0 Blues v Yellow Goalkeeper Blue team attack the goal whilst building up through the thirds, Yellow team attempt to stop Blue team and when in possession must score by playing the ball through one of the 3 Yellow gates. Yellow players when in attack can leave their zones. When Blue team get into Zone 4, players can enter that zone but Blue team must be mindful of transition to defend if Yellow team gain possession. Starting Positions width and depth in each zone, looking to play in between and behind the lines Midfielder s movement to receive, look to play forward, open body shape play in the halfspaces Quality of pass, accuracy and pace Encourage 1 v 1 s in wide areas in Zone 3 Communication between units and patience on the ball When players in Zone 4, encourage players to be creative in their decision making and movement Transition to defend can we win the ball back as quickly as possible as high up as possible Let players make their own decision. Encourage players to play one/two touch with the ball rotating at all times. Make sure players aren t crowding space by running towards the player in possession, taking away space.
