3 ABOUT US MISSION Our mission is to provide and equip players of all ages with the skills to develop both on and off the pitch. We aim to provide a safe space where players can increase their soccer skills while learning lifelong lessons of teamwork, because Together Everyone Achieves More. Staff, coaches, and parents working Together to develop player technical, tactical, physical and mental skills in a constructive environment that fosters growth. 5 SOCCER PROGRAMS RECREATIONAL SOCCER The Recreational Program is a soccer program for all youth players and is designed for beginners and youths interested in playing soccer in a less competitive environment. Basic soccer skills are taught and reinforced. United Futbol Academy supports US Youth Soccer s teaching philosophy with respect to small-sided soccer in U5, U6, U7, U8, U10 and U12. This philosophy allows the game to be the teacher by maximizing each player s touches on the ball and encourages all the players to develop their skills in all positions. Further, the philosophy discourages intense competition until the older age groups. ACADEMY SELECT/SOCCER The Academy program is designed for players interested in a transitional program from the traditional Recreational program to a more competitive Select program. Players in this program are exposed to a more intensive and competitive level than recreational and the focus is on developing the proper technical and tactical foundation that is crucial for the Select program. Commitment is required while fun is still being promoted. Academy participation is a one-year commitment consisting of Fall and Spring seasons. Academy soccer focuses on ages U8-U12. 6 STYLE OF PLAY TACTICAL PLAY Passing & receiving: Passing the ball on the ground with pace from different distances and receiving the ball while keeping it moving will be encouraged in all age groups. Shooting: Players must develop the ability to shoot from different distances. All players will be encouraged to shoot from any distance during the game. Ball Control and Turning: Players will be encouraged to keep close control of the ball and use different turning techniques to move away from the defender. TECNICAL PLAY Playing out from the back: All teams must feel comfortable playing the ball from the back through the midfield and from there to the final quarter of the field. Possession & transition: All teams must try to keep possession of the ball playing a one-two touch game. Players will be encouraged to support and move, thus creating passing options. Once the possession game is consolidated the team must learn how to transfer the ball in the most efficient way from one area of the field to another. Offense-defense quick transition & vice versa: When possession is lost, players must react quickly and apply pressure to regain the ball. Once possession is regained, players will be positioned immediately to counter-attack. PHYSICAL PLAY Speed & agility: These qualities will be evident in the game from the early ages. Endurance: Individual players and teams will train to be resilient to high-intensity action. Strength & power: Strong players develop their speed more quickly, prevent injuries and are more competitive in games. PSYCHO-SOCIAL PLAY Respect & discipline: Players will adapt to a role on the team and respect teammates, coaches, referees and opponents. Cooperation: Each player will be part of a unit, and will cooperate with teammates to achieve the objectives for a given task, session or game, as well as for the entire season. Competitiveness: Competitive players will be rewarded for their effort and focus. 6

7 COACHING PHILOSOPHY OUR GOALS Very simply: (1) Enjoyment. We recognize that there are many other activities kids could be doing, so the number 1 priority is to retain the players in the sport; (2) Develop high-quality soccer players, emphasizing long-term development at the younger ages instead of the win now mentality favored by some youth sports clubs; (3) Compete at high levels of play as teams get older. Long-term Development Philosophy We aim to get players to peak during their High School years. Long-term development is enhanced by keeping things fun, rotating players to different positions and, most importantly, focusing on the fundamental skills (ball mastery, technique) at the younger age group. Focusing on these skills may cost the team some wins at younger ages, but provides the platform necessary for players to learn the more complex aspects of the game and reach their potential. Competition is a central element in a player s development. At the younger ages (ages 8-12), however, a competitive environment should not be a result-oriented environment. The differences must be clear. A competitive environment at the youth level encourages decisions from player and coach alike that focus on performance rather than outcome (favoring ball skill and inventiveness as the means to find success within the rules and spirit of the game). The result is just one indicator of performance and at this age, not the most important one. Chicago Edge SC is also committed to Total Player Development as we try to teach our players a love for soccer, good sportsmanship, and strong values. Playing Time Unlike some other sports organizations game time is not stipulated as part of the bylaws. However, it is expected at the younger age groups (U8 to U12) that game time will be relatively equal between players. At older age groups (U13+) the consistent caliber of an individual s play and commitment during practices and games will become a major determinant factor in game time. However, at all ages, a player s actual game playing time will be strongly influenced by their on-time arrival at practices and games, their attitude both on and off the field, their compliance with coach instruction, and caliber of play. Player Rotation It is expected at the younger age groups that players will be rotated through all positions during the course of the season. This gives them a much better understanding of the roles and responsibilities throughout the field of play and will make them a better player in the long term. On occasion, this may mean a weakening of the team on the field. At U13+ it is expected that coaches will begin to narrow a player s focus to specialize in 2-3 positions. Game day rotation can often depend on player availability and opposition. Player rotation takes place over the course of a season. 7
