Match background Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City have been contenders at the top of the Premier League in recent years and now translate their rivalry to the European stage for the first time. This is Tottenham's first European game in their new stadium; their first four home UEFA Champions League games this season were played at Wembley. While Spurs are in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since their sole previous appearance eight years ago, this is City's third last-eight tie in the past four seasons and a second successive contest at this stage against a fellow English club. Both come into this match buoyed by positive round of 16 performances against German opponents, Spurs seeing off Borussia Dortmund 4-0 on aggregate while City recorded their biggest European victory last time out, dismantling Schalke 7-0 in Manchester to complete a 10-2 success over the two legs. Previous meetings There has been very little between Tottenham and City in domestic football over the years. In 156 competitive meetings, City have won 61 to Spurs' 60, with 35 draws although City have won the last three fixtures between the sides. In this season's Premier League, a sixth-minute Riyad Mahrez goal proved enough for City to pick up three points against Spurs at Wembley on 29 October. The league game at the City of Manchester Stadium is scheduled for 20 April three days after the second leg of this tie. In English domestic knockout football, Spurs have won nine of the teams' 14 ties including five of the last six. Form guide Tottenham Tottenham have won one and lost one of their previous two European Cup quarter-finals: 2010/11 Real Madrid L 0-5 (0-4 a, 0-1 h) 1961/62 Dukla Praha W 4-2 (0-1 a, 4-1 h) This is Spurs' fourth all-english European tie, but a first in 46 years, since an away-goals defeat by Liverpool in the 1972/73 UEFA Cup semi-final (0-1 a, 2-1 h). That made Spurs' two-legged record against English clubs W1 L2. Tottenham did win a European trophy at the expense of domestic opponents, overcoming Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-2 on aggregate (2-1 away, 1-1 home) in the first UEFA Cup final in Before beating Dortmund 3-0 in the round of 16 first leg Tottenham had never won a home match in the UEFA Champions League knockout rounds (D1 L2), scoring just one goal in those first three fixtures. This season, Mauricio Pochettino's side lost 4-2 at home to Barcelona in their first home game, but beat PSV Eindhoven (2-1) and Internazionale (1-0) in the next two. That helped them overtake Inter to snatch second place in Group B behind Barça; Spurs had just one point after three matches. The London club also won three of their four home games in last season's UEFA Champions League. Before beating Dortmund on matchday one in 2017/18, they had won just one of their previous five European home fixtures. Manchester City City's record in European Cup quarter-finals is W1 L1: 2017/18 Liverpool L 1-5 (0-3 a, 1-2 h) 2015/16 Paris Saint-Germain W 3-2 (2-2 a, 1-0 h) City have played four previous games against English clubs in European competition, and lost them all. Indeed, Gabriel Jesus's early goal in the quarter-final second leg against Liverpool 12 months ago is the only one they have managed in those four fixtures, with seven conceded. In addition to last season's defeat by Liverpool, City were also beaten by eventual winners Chelsea in the 1970/71 European Cup Winners' Cup semi-finals, losing 1-0 both away and at home. City's best UEFA Champions League performance was reaching the 2015/16 semi-finals. The winners of Group F in the autumn, Manchester City are in the knockout stages for the sixth year in a row, although this is only the third time they have made it to the last eight. City have twice recorded their biggest European victory in this season's UEFA Champions League, beating Shakhtar Donetsk 6-0 in Manchester on matchday four before the 7-0 defeat of Schalke last time out. Josep Guardiola's side have won seven of their last 13 European matches, home and away losing five. Away from home it is four wins in six matches (D1 L1), the sole defeat coming in England. 3

City have scored two or more goals in each of their four away games in this season's competition (W3 D1). Links and trivia City manager Guardiola has lost just two of his 14 managerial contests with Mauricio Pochettino (W8 D4); the pair also crossed paths as coaches in Spain with Barcelona and Espanyol respectively. Kyle Walker was a Tottenham player between 2011 and signing for City in 2017, scoring four goals in 183 Premier League appearances for the Lilywhites. Kieran Trippier joined City's academy aged nine and stayed until 2012, when he departed for Burnley on a permanent deal having failed to make a first-team appearance. International team-mates: Eric Dier, Danny Rose, Kieran Trippier, Dele Alli, Harry Kane & John Stones, Kyle Walker, Fabian Delph, Raheem Sterling (England) Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen & Vincent Kompany, Kevin De Bruyne (Belgium) Lucas Moura & Ederson, Danilo, Fernandinho, Gabriel Jesus (Brazil) Paulo Gazzaniga, Juan Foyth, Erik Lamela & Nicolás Otamendi, Sergio Agüero (Argentina) Hugo Lloris & Benjamin Mendy (France) Lloris and Mendy were both members of France's victorious 2018 FIFA World Cup squad. Latest news Tottenham Heung-Min Son's next appearance in UEFA club competition will be his 50th. Tottenham's most recent game was a 2-0 Premier League win against Crystal Palace on 3 April the first match at Spurs' new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium home. Son scored the first goal at the ground, Christian Eriksen supplying the second. That was only Spurs' second win in their last seven matches (D1 L4) all those defeats coming away from home. Spurs have drawn only four of their 47 games in 2018/19 in all competitions (W29 L14). Mauricio Pochettino's side have kept four clean sheets in their last 15 fixtures. Serge Aurier has not played since suffering a hamstring injury in Ivory Coast's 3-0 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying win against Rwanda on 23 March. Eric Dier was forced off early in England's 5-0 UEFA EURO 2020 qualifying win against the Czech Republic on 22 March with a hip injury. Harry Winks recovered from a similar problem to come on as a substitute against Palace, his first appearance since 5 March. Erik Lamela, who has not played since the round of 16 second leg at Borussia Dortmund, has a hamstring injury. Manchester City Aymeric Laporte made his 50th appearance in UEFA club competition in the round of 16 second leg. City are the top scorers in this season's UEFA Champions League with 26 goals. City have won 21 of their last 23 games in all competitions, losing one they have scored 72 goals in that run, conceding only 11. The one game in that sequence that City drew was against Chelsea in the League Cup final at Wembley on 24 February; they went on to win 4-3 on penalties to lift the trophy for the sixth time overall and the fourth in the last six seasons. On Saturday City reached the FA Cup final for the first time since 2013 and the 11th overall with a 1-0 defeat of Brighton at Wembley, Gabriel Jesus scoring the only goal early on. The English champions have won their last eight league matches. City have won nine of their last ten away games in all competitions, and all of the last six. City have kept seven clean sheets in their last nine matches in all competitions. Josep Guardiola's side have scored five or more goals in ten of their 52 games this season. City's home record in all competitions this season is W23 L2 they have won the last 11, scoring 48 goals and conceding three. The Manchester club beat third-tier Burton Albion 9-0 at home in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final on 9 January City's biggest win since a 10-1 defeat of Huddersfield in They won the return leg

The Citizens signed 18-year-old midfielder Ante Palaversa from Hajduk Split in January, loaning the teenager back to the Croatian club for the rest of the season. Sergio Agüero, who has four goals in his last three matches and 15 in his last 14, suffered a muscle injury in a 2-0 win at Fulham on 30 March. The Argentinian missed the home win against Cardiff by the same scoreline four days later, a game in which Oleksandr Zinchenko went off midway through the first half with a hamstring problem; neither featured against Brighton. Kyle Walker was taken off at half-time on Saturday with a hamstring problem. Benjamin Mendy had surgery on the cartilage in his left knee on 14 November. Until he played 79 minutes against Brighton at the weekend his only appearance since then had been in the second leg at Burton on 23 January. Claudio Bravo has been out since sustaining an Achilles problem on 20 August. 5

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino Date of birth: 2 March 1972 Nationality: Argentinian Playing career: Newell's Old Boys, Espanyol (three times), Paris Saint-Germain, Bordeaux Coaching career: Espanyol, Southampton, Tottenham A tough-tackling central defender, Pochettino was a product of Newell's Old Boys in Argentina where he briefly played with the legendary Diego Maradona during his five years in the senior squad. He moved to Europe in 1994 to join Spanish side Espanyol and won the Copa del Rey in 2000, before joining Paris in January After a stint at Bordeaux, returned to Espanyol, initially on loan, before hanging up his boots in 2006 having won another Copa del Rey. Capped 20 times by Argentina, appearing in the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Switched to coaching with Espanyol in January 2009, with the club lying third from bottom in the Spanish Liga; guided them to a tenth-placed finish. Under Pochettino, three further mid-table finishes followed before a slow start to 2012/13 prompted his departure. Surprisingly resurfaced in England at Southampton in January 2013, succeeding Nigel Adkins; introduced a highpressing, attacking style which helped the club keep clear of relegation trouble. In his first full season in charge, took Saints to eighth position with 56 points a new club record. Appointed Tottenham manager on a five-year contract in May 2014, and led the side to the English League Cup final in his debut campaign, only to lose out to Chelsea. The following season, 2015/16, Pochettino's side were in contention to win the club's first league title since 1961 until a draw at Chelsea with two games to go; nevertheless finished third to book a UEFA Champions League return, and finished a place higher, as Premier League runners-up, in 2016/17, before claiming third spot again the following season. Josep Guardiola Date of birth: 18 January 1971 Nationality: Spanish Playing career: Barcelona, Brescia (twice), Roma, Al-Ahly Club, Dorados de Sinola Coaching career: Barcelona B, Barcelona, Bayern München, Manchester City Known as 'Pep', he came up through Barcelona's youth ranks to win six Spanish Liga titles, one European Champion Clubs' Cup, a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and two Copa del Rey trophies from 1990 to Also had spells with Brescia, Roma, al-ahly in Doha and Mexico's Dorados de Sinola before ending his playing career in Won 47 caps and Olympic footballing gold with Spain in 1992, but missed the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cups through injury. Having coached Barcelona's B team, he took charge of the senior side in 2008 and won the UEFA Champions League, Spanish Liga and Copa del Rey in his first season. That was just the beginning of a glorious four-season spell which yielded 14 trophies. In his second campaign, Guardiola steered Barcelona to a second Liga title as well as the Spanish and UEFA Super Cups and the FIFA Club World Cup. Even more sucess followed in 2010/11 as Barcelona completed a hat-trick of Spanish titles and, for the second time under Guardiola, got the better of Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League final. In his final season, 2011/12, Guardiola's team won the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup once more before he signed off his reign with a second Copa del Rey triumph. After a year's break, Guardiola took charge of Bayern in June 2013, replacing Jupp Heynckes. Collected the UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, German Cup and, with a record seven games to spare, the Bundesliga title in his first season in Germany. Secured his second successive Bundesliga title the following season, and Bayern again dominated domestically in 2015/16, but all three of Guardiola's UEFA Champions League campaigns in Bavaria ended in the semi-finals. Opted for a new challenge at Manchester City in summer 2016 and, though the first year in charge produced Guardiola's first trophy-less campaign as a coach, he and City delivered in style in 2017/18, racking up 100 points in winning the Premier League and adding the English League Cup; the latter was retained in

Competition facts UEFA Champions League: Did you know? Overall records In 2016/17 Real Madrid became the first team to successfully defend the UEFA Champions League trophy, with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the previous club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose. Real Madrid then made it three wins in a row in 2017/18, becoming the fourth club to win three or more successive titles in European Cup history, and the first to do it twice. Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München. Knockout stage Real Madrid have qualified for the UEFA Champions League knockout phase a record 23 times, including 22 in succession. They have also played a competition-high 97 knockout phase matches ahead of Bayern München (91) and Barcelona (88). Teams have overturned a first-leg deficit to go through 46 times, including Porto and Juventus in the 2018/19 round of 16. Before this season, only twice Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos in the 1995/96 semi-finals and Internazionale's victory against Bayern in the 2010/11 round of 16 had a side progressed after a home first-leg loss; however, Ajax again (against Real Madrid) and Manchester United (against Paris Saint-Germain) both achieved the feat in the 2018/19 round of 16. The biggest losing margin a side has overhauled was achieved by Barcelona against Paris Saint-Germain in the 2016/17 last 16, when they lost 4-0 away but progressed thanks to a 6-1 home success. That eclipsed the previous record held by Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals, when they went down 4-1 at AC Milan but won 4-0 at home; Roma equalled that margin in last season's quarter-finals, turning round a 4-1 first-leg loss at Barcelona with a 3-0 home success. Thirty-one ties have been decided on away goals, including 12 where the triumphant team lost the first leg. Bayern and Monaco have benefited from the away goals rule five times more than any other club whereas Internazionale have been eliminated by that method a record four times. In all, 29 ties have required extra time. Thirteen have been settled by extra time alone: six round of 16 encounters including Porto-Roma this season, five quarter-finals, the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea and Liverpool, and the 2013/14 final between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid. Sixteen ties have gone to penalties, including seven finals 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2012 and The first two-legged tie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 victory over Lyon on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw, still the only quarter-final to go to penalties. Bayern, Chelsea and Atlético Madrid have all appeared in three shoot-outs, sharing the competition record, with Bayern, Atlético and Liverpool having won the most (two apiece). The 2015/16 round of 16 tie between Atlético Madrid and PSV was the first to finish goalless after two legs. Thirteen have finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Real Madrid's defeat of Manchester City in the 2015/16 semi-finals. Liverpool (versus Porto) and Bayern (versus Beşiktaş) both won 5-0 in the 2017/18 round of 16, equalling the knockout phase record for the biggest first-leg lead Real Madrid's 6-1 victory at Schalke in 2013/14 and Bayern's 5-0 success at Sporting CP in 2008/09, both also in the round of 16. Bayern eventually beat Sporting by a record aggregate margin of 12-1 after a 7-1 stroll in the home second leg; that tie also featured more goals (13) over its two legs than any UEFA Champions League knockout tie until it was equalled by Liverpool's 7-6 aggregate win against Roma in the 2017/18 semi-final. Bayern and Manchester City jointly hold the record for the largest margin of victory in a UEFA Champions League knockout match. Bayern beat both Basel (2011/12) and Shakhtar Donetsk (2014/15) 7-0 in the round of 16 second leg, while City beat Schalke by the same scoreline at the same stage of the 2018/19 competition. A record five clubs from England participated in the 2017/18 knockout phase. England has also provided four clubs on seven other occasions as has Spain four times and Germany twice. England is the only nation to have provided four quarter-finalists in a season, 2018/19 being the third occasion after 2007/08 and 2008/09. There have been 200 UEFA Champions League quarter-finalists. Spain has provided the largest number (49), 19

followed by England (43), with Germany and Italy level in third place on 29 apiece. Exactly three quarters of the teams reaching the last eight have therefore come from those four nations, with 12 others having provided the rest. In 2018/19 Barcelona reached a record 12th successive European Cup quarter-final. Barça and Bayern have both reached 17 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, one more than Real Madrid. The biggest European Cup quarter-final victory was Real Madrid's 8-0 first-leg defeat of Sevilla in 1957/58. Manchester United's 7-1 win against Roma in 2006/07 is the biggest victory in a UEFA Champions League quarterfinal match. Bayern beat Porto 6-1 in 2014/15, Barcelona have twice won 5-1, against Chelsea after extra time (1999/2000) and Shakhtar Donetsk (2010/11), while there have been four 4-0 victories. Chelsea-Liverpool in 2008/09 featured 12 goals over the two legs, a quarter-final record. Clarence Seedorf is the only player to lift the European Cup with three clubs (Ajax 1995, Real Madrid 1998, Milan 2003, 2007). Bob Paisley (Liverpool 1977, 1978, 1981) was the first coach to win three times, a feat Carlo Ancelotti (Milan 2003, 2007, Real Madrid 2014) and Zinédine Zidane (2016, 2017, 2018) have replicated. In 2014 Ancelotti also became the fifth coach to win the trophy with two clubs; Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund 1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburg 1983), José Mourinho (Porto 2004, Internazionale 2010) and Jupp Heynckes (Real Madrid 1998, Bayern 2013) had previously achieved the feat. Goalscoring records Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer Leverkusen on 7 March 2012, a feat matched by Shakhtar Donetsk's Luiz Adriano at BATE Borisov on 21 October Eleven more players, also including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently Cristiano Ronaldo for Real Madrid on matchday six in 2015/16. Cristiano Ronaldo set a new record for a UEFA Champions League group stage with 11 goals in 2015/16, eclipsing his own mark of nine in 2013/14, which Luiz Adriano matched in 2014/15 and Ronaldo himself equalled in 2017/18. Lionel Messi got ten goals in 2016/17; Zlatan Ibrahimović (2013/14), Ruud van Nistelrooy (2004/05), Filippo Inzaghi, Hernán Crespo (both 2002/03) and Robert Lewandowski (2018/19) managed eight. Messi's hat-trick against PSV Eindhoven on matchday one of the 2018/19 competition was his eighth in the competition, a mark Ronaldo matched against Atlético Madrid in the round of 16 second leg. Oldest and youngest players Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having featured against Real Madrid on matchday six in 2007/08 aged 43 years and 252 days. Alessandro Costacurta is the oldest outfield player; the Milan defender was 40 years and 211 days when he played against AEK Athens in 2006/07. Francesco Totti is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 38 years and 59 days, in Roma's 1-1 draw at CSKA Moskva on 25 November Ryan Giggs (37 years 290 days) was the previous record holder. Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared; he was 16 years and 87 days when he started for Anderlecht against Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November He was sent off in the 37th minute.
