1 St Ursula s Weekly Issue 206 Friday 20th May 2016 Message from the Head Teacher Strive with all your might to keep yourselves as you have been called by God St Angela Merici (Prologue to the Rule/10 ) Royal Greenwich Singing Spectacular! Congratulations and thank you to Miss Johnson and the school choir for the wonderful performance at Blackheath Concert Halls last night. The students sang beautifully as always, we are so fortunate to have such great talent within our school. Year 11 Well done to Year 11 on the way they have been conducting themselves throughout the exams and for the way in which they are handling all the stress and pressure. Please continue to keep the students in your prayers as they continue with their exams. FORTHCOMING EVENTS Year 5 Taste of Technology Days 8th & 9th June French Trip Meeting for Parents 16th June 5pm Year 7 Academic Reviews / Enrichment Day 20th June Year 10 Trip to Kintbury 24th -26th June Literacy Corner Dining Hall Lastly I would like to congratulate the girls on the way they have been performing their Serviam duties in the dining room, by cleaning their tables after eating to ensure the next group of girls have a pleasant space to eat in. We know the dining room is a crowded place, but they are behaving very well and we are now looking at trying to improve lunchtime facilities with the support of governors. A recent article in the press this week released the startling findings of the Book- Trust survey which show that children in London are least likely to be read a book at bedtime compared to anywhere else in the country! This, you will agree, is disturbing news: only 28% of families in London spend 20 minutes reading together before children go to sleep compared to 40% of parents/ guardians in the rest of the country. Understandably home and working life is pressurised and parents are busy but arguably all parents, throughout the country, are equally busy. The BookTrust urges families to find this essential time to read to their children at bedtime. A campaign Bath Book Bed has been set up by the charity urging parents to follow a routine. The benefits are many; not only does it develop a child s reading and listening skills and stimulate the imagination but through this calm activity, it will enable a child (and their parents/guardians) to sleep better. Such were the conclusions of the survey.

4 Year 10 and 11 A level French taster lesson Our GCSE French and Spanish groups recently had the experience of an MFL taster lesson with Alinta Sara, a French and Spanish tutor in a local sixth form college. Our Year 11 undercover reporter and keen linguist reviewed the lesson for us, in French of course! The lesson was great fun. I learned that francophone countries are countries that speak French. I also learned about different types of French music in the world. For example, Zouk is Caribbean and Coupé Décalé is African. I thought 1er Gaou by Magic System was very catchy. Then I learned lots of new adjectives from the song Papaoutai by Stromae. Stromae is a French musician, who I think is really good. He did not know his father, who was killed in the Rwandan genocide. The song's lyrics suggested it was a sad song. However, the song has a fast tempo. Overall, the lesson was amazing and I am happy to have experienced it.

5 TBC win best ever school Football tournament TBC prevailed after a 2016 St Ursula s Football tournament full of superb goals, fantastic saves, great team work, and battling individual performances. In Group A the year 7 Queens Arms faced the highly rated All stars and played well but lost 4-0 due to the ruthless finishing of Jessie and Luiza. Then Queens Arms regrouped and beat the O Sullivan squad thanks to great goalkeeping from Temi and a nicely taken goal from Awele. The last group game was the best one. O Sullivan squad threatened a major shock when they went ahead twice thanks to two long range screamers from Julia. Allstars however held their nerve and Jessie settled the group with a late winner to put O Sullivan out. In Group B Goals FC battled bravely and some inspired goalkeeping from Georgia made Margaret s supporters nervous until two late Nnebesi strikes meant the match ended 2-0. In the second game tournament favourites TBC and Margaret played out an exciting but scoreless match due to brave defending from Jayde and great goalkeeping from Beverley. The last game was more one sided with Year 7 Goals FC going down 5-0 to TBC but they were not disgraced to lose to a hat trick from Tatiana and two from Lauren, both U16 first team regulars. The 5/6 th place play off between Goals and O Sullivan saw a battling display from the younger team who were cruelly beaten after Julia tricked her way into the box and laid it off for Charlene to finish. Semi-final 1 was a hard fought clash between Year 9 rivals Allstars and Margaret. Nnebesi was brilliantly kept out by Regina, before an outrageously bending long range shot from Jessie put Margaret out. In the 2 nd Semi-final Queens arms outplayed their year 10 opponents TBC for much of the game and never gave up despite Orlaghs goal. In the last minute of normal time Rahel drilled in an equaliser that shocked the Year 10 supporters behind the goal. They took the match to extra time and Kayla in particular defended brilliantly but Tatiana s late winner put TBC through. The final was a predictably tight affair with the combination of Jessie and Luiza working well with Sian to keep TBC out and create several half chances. School captain Tatiana had other plans though and her low shot on the turn deceived Regina to win the cup for TBC.

8 DLA Piper Trip - 5 th May 2016 On Thursday 5 th May thirty year 8s and 9s were chosen to attend a trip with Mr Mandalos and Mrs Smith to the famous law firm DLA Piper, a famous law firm with offices all over the world, founded in The purpose of this trip was for us to learn about the meaning of law, what it means to be a lawyer, and what a normal day in the life of a lawyer is like. We were given the opportunity to imagine ourselves working as a lawyer and were divided into our own teams, or law firms! Firstly, we met some lawyers who introduced themselves and described their work. They were a very diverse mix of people one lawyer we met studied History and Politics at school and university and then worked in Singapore for 15 months. He then moved to London and has worked at DLA Piper for eight months. Overall, there are people of 67 different nationalities working at DLA Piper, speaking almost 100 different languages! We then talked about the meaning of law and the different types of law. The two main areas are criminal and civil law. Criminal law is to do with breaking the law, for example robbery. Civil law is to do with broken contracts between businesses and civilians. Having been taught this, we were then told to discuss whether some situations were to do with criminal or civil law. Our law firms were awarded points depending on how many we got right. For lunch we had very delicious sandwiches. There was also a variety of chocolates and biscuits, and beverages such as juice, coffee, and tea, which Mr Mandalos and Mrs Smith enjoyed very much. After lunch, we were given cases. The law firms were split into two groups defendants and prosecutors. Each team had to come up with arguments for and against their case, and evidence to support these arguments. Each law firm had to present an introduction, and then their three main arguments. They then had to question a and then provide a summary statement. Each case was then judged by a jury (made up of lawyers from DLA Piper) who gave their verdicts on whether or not the defendants were innocent or guilty. This was a very helpful trip as we had a chance to see some aspects of being a lawyer. In the future this is bound to help us decide if this would be, or would not be, one of our choices for a career and an aspiration for the future. By Naomi Bucknor, 8Declan
