Final day 24 hours in Berlin As the climax to the World Cup, the final represents the ultimate logistical challenge. In never-before-seen images, twelve photographers captured some of the fascinating moments before, during and after the 2006 final at Berlin s Olympiastadion exclusively for FIFA magazine. PREPARING THE PITCH At the crack of dawn, the pitch is mowed for the last time to ensure that the grass is exactly 28 millimetres long in line with the tournament regulations. After that, out comes the roller, and finally fresh markings are painted AM THE PRESS CONFERENCE The media centre lies empty before the daily press conference. Soon afterwards, FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter and the President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, announce an agreement to provide support for African football (right) much to the delight of South African President Thabo Mbeki. 2 PREPARATIONS IN FULL SWING A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING AND EVERYTHING IN ITS PLACE 2.00 PM 3.00 PM The playing surface is cleaned, food and drinks are stacked up in the catering area and a cameraman tests equipment. Tables are laid in the VIP area. Police vans side-byside in the depths of the stadium. Photographers chairs are lined up in position. THE TROPHY ARRIVES 2.30 PM NOTHING LEFT TO CHANCE A window cleaner gives the glass a gleaming finish, catering staff receive final instructions, while workers apply elbow grease at pitchside to the roof of one of the benches. Meanwhile, an Italian fan gets in the mood for the main event in more relaxed fashion. The glittering prize is delicately put in place for a TV check (right). Above: hostesses are briefed, the media tribune is almost deserted. FINISHING TOUCHES 3:22 PM 4.00 PM Make-up is applied to a McDonald s promotions girl (right). 3 WAITING Spectators start queuing up long before the gates open. The security checkpoint remains quiet... but not for long. OPEN FOR BUSINESS The fans are finally allowed into the stadium. Team officials prepare the players kit in the dressing rooms. On the left, the shin pads that France goalkeeper Fabien Barthez used when his team lifted the trophy in 1998 and which he still wears. MEDIA CENTRE EMPTIES 6.30 PM 4.30 PM 5.30 PM Now that journalists have received their tickets and details of the team lineups, the frenzied activity eases off. Two photographers take a nap before kick-off. AUGUST

4 7.00 PM FAMOUS FACES As fans pass through checkpoints, the Italian President Giorgio Napolitano proudly shows off a jersey from Francesco Totti to his French counterpart, Jacques Chirac, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter. CONTRASTS While Italy defender Gianluca Zambrotta visits the Olympiastadion s chapel shortly before kick-off, Shakira sings and struts her stuff outside much to the delight of the fans packed into the stadium PM Jacques Rogge, the President of the International Olympic Committee, sits with Joseph S. Blatter. Former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl is another celebrity attending the match. TENSION RISES 7.50 PM The two teams follow referee Horacio Elizondo and his two assistants out of the tunnel and onto the pitch. Marco Materazzi goes up against France s attacking midfielder Frank Ribery; moments later, the Italian defender levels the scores with a towering header PM HALF-TIME In an office deep beneath the stadium, a random draw is carried out to determine which players will undergo doping controls after the match. The envelopes containing the players names will not be opened until 15 minutes before the final whistle. 6 IGNOMINIOUS FAREWELL 9.15 PM TO AND FRO The game becomes more intense and the challenges increase. Eric Abidal and Lilian Thuram team up against Vicenzo Iaquinta (top), Gianluigi Buffon punches clear. As the sun goes down, Gennaro Gattuso tussles with opponent Zinedine Zidane. At the other end of the pitch, Luca Toni beats Thuram to the ball. Zinedine Zidane receives a red card from referee Horacio Elizondo for headbutting Marco Materazzi. Irrespective of the result, the great French playmaker will not receive the trophy. It is an unhappy ending to a wonderful career PM 9.30 PM MISSED! David Trezeguet s penalty comes back off the crossbar. Gianluigi Buffon rejoices. Four minutes later, Fabio Grosso successfully converts his team s fifth penalty and Italy have won the World Cup. Francesco Totti and Marco Materazzi savour the moment in different ways. Gennaro Gattuso loses his shorts. Up above the pitch in the VIP area, the last cutlets are prepared PM 2006 FIFA World Cup. Totti does not want to be parted from the trophy.
