9 President s Report 2013 Annual General Report Dookie enjoyed a successful season on and off the field and courts this year. In his debut season as senior football coach, Matt Maddison earned the respect of not only all at our club but also our rival clubs as he ably led the side into the finals. Matt brought professionalism well beyond his years to the role and his enthusiasm, dedication and passion for the game were contagious throughout the club. This year also saw the appointment of a new senior netball coach, Tanya Caruana. Tanya inspired our teams with a high level of netball knowledge and again demanded a level of professionalism from our netballers which was well rewarded when 4 of our sides made finals as a direct result of her training regime and emphasis on improved basic skill levels. Several players notched up impressive milestones this year, most notably Chris Ludeman playing his 400 th game for the Club and Lyndal Hackett her 200 th. Lyndal was presented with a Life Membership at the club s Annual Senior Ball for her services to the club, including not only her illustrious playing career but also her services as an umpire and coach. Netball Operations Manager Megan O Connor was also made a Life Member of the club this year in recognition of her outstanding services to the club. Megan has been involved in the club as a player, umpire, coach and committee member. Sam Beggs returned to the committee as Sponsorship Manager this season and fervently pursued new and old sponsors to the club. His continued commitment to this role has meant the club has enjoyed support from a wide variety of community organisations and businesses. The very successful Sponsors Day was testament to the tireless work of Sam in ensuring Dookie United enjoys the support of sponsors from within the wider community. Our social committee also ran a very successful season of activities, including the Annual Ball which had a record attendance as well as an innovative new idea, the well-received Casino Night, and the Dookie ipod Shuffle. The social events at the club are always considered a highlight for the year and it was great to see so many people able to enjoy the events offered by the club this year. In particular, it was very pleasing to note that all of our social events ran smoothly and without incident. It is a testament to the calibre of our club members that we can run several events throughout the season safe in the knowledge that our members will behave responsibly, including always looking after their mates, organising designated drivers, and consuming alcohol responsibly and respecting the rights of other club members. Our club canteen remains one of the healthiest and most reasonably priced canteens within our league. Our kitchen volunteers provide a wide range of lunch options at home games and the income from our Thursday night dinner program throughout the season is invaluable to the club. The countless hours spent preparing the fuel for our athletes tanks is always appreciated. There are countless other volunteers who have fulfilled innumerable jobs throughout this season. Without their help it would not be possible to continue running a club as great as Dookie United. I would like to extend a sincere thanks to the members of the committee and the numerous volunteers who put in countless hours to ensure Dookie remains the family club of choice within the PDFNL. 10 Secretary s Report 2013 turned out to be a success on and off the playing fields and courts. It is great to see our senior and junior players blending well together and the club had a nice vibe about it. No season goes pass without its problems and I believe our current committee members handled each situation to the best of their abilities. It has been a pleasure to work alongside them as they each contributed to the club and imparted some skill or knowledge whilst in their roles. They have been wonderful support to me this year. Our coaches have been terrific this year. They have worked together with our senior coaches and they have worked hard to raise the bar during training; mentoring our juniors and improving the standard of play throughout the season. I would like to particularly thank Matt Maddison who has paid particular attention to include our netballers when praising the club; an area that has been lacking in previous years. The club is keen to continue to close this gap as the club moves forward. To the numerous volunteers, whether on training nights and game days, thank you for volunteering your valuable time in assisting the keep the club functioning throughout the season. This year, the club definitely felt the strain on volunteer numbers with one junior football side less. Whilst I have your attention, I d like to remind playing and non-playing members, that when you sign on the dotted line to play for Dookie United, you commit to support the club in a voluntary capacity. When we all do our share the load is not so demanding for anyone. I d like to thank Megan O Connor and Kaye O Connor for coordinating the netball and canteen rosters respectively for the season. This is not an easy task and both ladies tried to accommodate all requests whilst ensuring that all roles were filled so that game day ran smoothly. Our trainers definitely need a well-earned pat on the back for their tireless work on training nights and game days. They go about their business with not too much fuss and they are an asset to the club and we should not take them for granted. To the Valda, Chaz and the kitchen crew; once again the club is indebted to you for passion, dedication and willingness to feed a hungry group after training. As with many aspects in life, there is always room for improvement and this also applies to Dookie United can and no doubt will be a great year for Dookie United. I wish the club all the best on their journey to success and look forward in being part of the winning team! Alida Kildey 2013 DUFNC Secretary Sponsorship & Marketing Manager A massive thank you goes out to all of the valued sponsors of the Dookie United Football and Netball Club this season. The club would find it very hard to operate or provide the fun, friendly environment without sponsorship money. To all members and supporters we ask that you please return the favour and support the sponsors businesses (highlighted in the section titled 2013 Sponsors ) whenever possible. We look forward to next season and hope to build on the success of 2013 and we hope all sponsors can be part of that. Personally I would like to thank those at the club who helped me in my role this year, particularly Helen who organised all of the invoices and sponsor packages. See you all at the club next year. 11 Treasurer s Report I would like to start by thanking my fellow committee members for their support during the 2013 Football and Netball season. I would also like to say a big thank you to Alida who is great to work with and was a great backup when I could not be in the office at times. Overall the financial situation of the club is very healthy although our turnover decreased from $180, in 2012 to $171, in Once again the canteen under Valda and her team did a fantastic job generating an income of $35, The biggest income boost was from the crop which yielded $23, up from $12, last year. I would like to say how much we appreciate all the hard work put in by the Ludeman brothers and Chas Dickins. A big thank you to the Sam Beggs as Marketing/Sponsorship Manager for the great job he done again this year, bringing in $20, worth of sponsorship. I d like to thank Jodie Fleming and Andrew & Katrina Holland in their efforts in securing Steggles as a major sponsor for our Club. Our net income (profit) for the season this year shows how much hard work everybody has put in to make it a good year for the club. The profit for this year was $4, compared with $1, last year. At the end of the season our trading account balance was $5,280.65, compared with $1, at the end of last season. 14 Football Operations Report The 2013 season has come and gone and it has been a very positive season for our club on the football side of things. It was a slow start to the off season with the recruiting of a senior coach the most difficult role to fill. After many negotiations with a number of potential candidates, Matt Maddison took on the role of leading our senior side and our club in In Matt`s debut year as a coach he took control and lead from the front as if he had done so many times before. Matt recruited very well with many new and past players thundering up for the pre-season training and a great feel was created among not just the senior footballers but the Under 17`s as well. We welcomed Travis Waters as our Reserves coach which has to be one of the most difficult roles at the club. Travis did a fantastic job with his huge turnover of numbers throughout the season and was very unlucky not to have his side playing finals football. Pat McMullan took on the important role as Under 17 coach and with limited numbers did a terrific job developing our juniors with over 30% of his players getting a taste of senior football, which is so valuable for the experience of these young kids and for the future of our club. Our senior footballers played some great team football throughout the home and away season and were rewarded with a very successful finals campaign, winning the Elimination final and the First Semi-final before losing in a close game to Waaia in the Preliminary final. A number of our senior players did very well at League level and need to be congratulated; none more so than Matt Maddison who took out Coach of the Year honors at the League presentation night. Pat McMullan was voted best player by opposition clubs which is a prestigious award to win. Matt Kitto polled extremely well coming third in the League vote count with Pat McMullan fourth. Angus Sinclair who was still an eligible Under 17 player was runner-up in the Rising Star Award for the League. Dookie United had five representatives in the Inter- League representative team which was captained by Pat McMullan, a fantastic achievement by Pat and our club. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our valued club members who put in many hours each week to put our football teams on the field. It all starts with our coaches, our team managers, our field umpires; Nick Boyd and Steve Bowmaker, our goal umpires, time keepers, boundary umpires, runners and water boys and girls. A special thank you must go to Julie Cormican who along with Col Moylan washed the jumpers this year, thank you ladies! Thanks must go to Tony Moylan who did the line marking each home game. Special thanks to the terrific work that our club trainers perform throughout the season during training sessions and in particular on game day...a thankless job, but a very important part of our football club. A big thank you goes to Alida Kildey who was our Game Day Manager in 2013 and she did a terrific job with all the paperwork which is involved to get the sides on the field. Finally, thank you to all the players that pulled on the Dookie United jumper this season, you did a great job throughout the season and held our club in the highest regard. To finish, we have already been working hard to recruit new players to the club in 2014 with some big announcements to be made in the coming weeks and with almost all our current player group returning. We look forward to successful year yet again in 2014 for this great family club. Steven Ludeman 2013 Football Operations Manager 13 P a g e

18 Senior Coach s Report The year began with many phone calls, trying to secure the group we had and top up with a few extras to fill the gap of those departing. We didn t want just superstar players who would put their hand out and ask for $$, we wanted players who would fit into the well-respected Dookie culture and in simple terms people who were good blokes. We were successful. Getting commitment out of the local boys who had been comfortable in the reserves but willing to challenge themselves and commit to giving it a shot at playing senior football and recruiting some new (and some familiar) faces to the club, all of whom ended up being good blokes! Pre-season started with 2 nights in at Wanganui (Shepparton), and although there was a minority who disagreed with the Dookie team training in Shepparton I made the decision that this was best for the club. With the simple equation of bigger farms + smaller families = less young Dookie locals to choose from we thought it would be best to break tradition and cater for the majority Never forgetting who we were representing and who we would be playing for when the season rolled around. Before the season began there was one moment in which I believe made this group into the tight knit, relentless, committed and most hardworking group of blokes in which they became - Three Peaks. Three peaks was the hiking trip which around 30 of us took part in. Conquering the peaks of 3 mountains, covering almost 40km s on foot, walking with a rope for 1 peak that was not to be broken by any member, and stretchering teammates up another with make shift stretches were all part of a day that I myself will never forget. Our practice matches against Goorambat, Murchison and Yarroweyah were all pretty promising with all 3 games resulting in wins. Great for the confidence, although I think 2 of those teams were holding up (or close too) the rest of the teams on the ladder in their respective leagues by the end of the year... The season began with a few wins and a few losses. We based our plan around having no individuals and each playing a part in helping the team succeed on field for the club never entirely sure what we were capable of. Before we knew it the end of the season was near. We had beaten Shep East 3 times in a year (that s always good!) and we were shaping up to possibly finish 3 rd on the ladder. We were heading into finals with a real show and most importantly with the belief that we could match it with the best. Our finals campaign began against 1 of the only 2 teams we hadn t beaten all year, Rennie. With the team ready to win our first final in 3 years we played some good footy to finish on top of the slightly depleted Rennie side. That took us to the second round, against our old foes in Shep East. We had them covered during the year, and with the motivation of them still thinking they were better than us we were determined to extend the 3 wins in a year to 4. We did just that! So 2 games down, we headed to Waaia to take on 1 of the season flag favourites. Waaia proved too good for us on the day, and that game would mark the end of 2013 season for us. From round 1 to that final game at Waaia we could never doubt the commitment in which the boys had for the club throughout the year. Finishing well above the predicted 2 nd bottom, we had in my eyes a very successful year. Most importantly we had represented our football club in a great fashion whilst developing the mateship in which we had always set out to develop as a group. None of this would have been possible if it weren t for those people involved in the club. Thank you to the sponsors, supporters, members and volunteers who all so generously give either their time, money or both to the club just so we can play the game we love. I cannot thank these people enough for what they do and what too often goes unnoticed. Thank you to every single one of you, and thank you to all those involved in helping 2013 at DUFNC be an extremely enjoyable year. Till next year. 19 Reserves Coach s Report Going into season 2013 we had high hopes for the reserves and on ability alone we could have done anything but our commitment levels let us down. As a result the only time we were out of the top 5 was after the last round and missed out on playing finals. At the end of the home and away season we finished in 6 th spot winning 6 games and losing 12. With 65 players going through the reserves this season we had plenty of changes each week but it was great having so many people wanting to play for our great club. We also had a number of under 17 s play for us which was fantastic and hopefully helps them in some way with their development. The highlight of the season was by far in round 9 with Chris Ludeman playing his 400 th club game. Even though we lost the game in a close contest it was great to share the day with Chris and we had players lining up to be a part of it. I would like to thank the club for the opportunity to coach the reserves again in 2013 and look forward to being a part of the Dookie United Football Netball Club in Travis Waters 2013 Reserves Coach Under 17 s Coach s Report Firstly I would like to congratulate the players on their effort and attitude that they showed throughout the course of the year. They displayed great sportsmanship and respect to opposition players and umpiring officials at all times. With restricted numbers this year our goals were not limited to games won and lost but to develop the players skill levels and knowledge of the game as well as ensuring an enjoyment in being part of a cohesive team. With this in mind I feel that the year was very much a success. Three players eligible for the under 14 s competition in Ben Hamilton, Sam Hayes and Brad O Keefe played the entire year and performed magnificently, exceeding all expectations. A further seven players experienced senior football, one of these being Angus Sinclair who held a regular spot in the senior side. Despite not being able to field an under 14 s side in this year s competition, this indicates that there is some great talent coming up the ranks and that the future is bright for the Dookie United Football Club. I would like to thank Bill O Connor, Alida Kildey and Steve Ludeman for their tremendous support throughout the year and Lou Portia, Grant Hayes, Steve Bowmaker, Steve O Keeffe, Phil Gall and Klaus Lucattini for volunteering their time on game days. I look forward to seeing the continual development of our junior footballers in 2014 and beyond. Patrick (Paddy) McMullan 2013 under 17 Football Coach 18 P a g e

25 Netball Operations Report It has been a very successful season for the netball arm of the club this year. The appointment of head coach, Tanya Caruana has proven to be a positive step forward for the Club, with four netball teams managing a spot in the finals series. The 17 and under team managed to win their way through from fifth on the ladder to the grand final - a very successful outcome and a great insight into the future of the Club. All players at all age groups and levels benefited from the expertise that Tanya provided, as did the other coaches who also benefited greatly from her assistance and advice. This year the Club moved toward a more structured approach to the coaching and development of our junior teams, following recommendation from both Netball Victoria and Netball Australia. The 11 & under, 13 & under and 15 & under are now coached in a structured way in that all players are given the opportunity to play in all positions, with the focus being on developing their basic skills and knowledge of all positions on the court as opposed to simply winning. Some coaches have struggled with this concept, but understand the reason and direction the Club is taking. We intend to continue with this concept into 2014 and beyond to ensure we are developing well-rounded and wellskilled players. Many senior and junior players arrived during pre-season training, with quite a few new players to the Club. As there were too many players to accommodate and provide good game time to all, the coaches and netball operations managers decided to move into a selection process which was explained to all players. While our selection process was not ideal, there have been many discussions on how to improve the timeframes to ensure a smoother and fairer process for With a more focussed and consistent approach to coaching now taking place, we hope to continue strengthening the Club by strengthening the skills of our players and coaches to ensure more success on the court in the future. 29 A Grade Coach s Report In retrospect I d say this year has been cram packed and has raced by very quickly. I don t feel I have achieved all that I wanted to but I really think we got some good foundations formed got everyone thinking on the same track. Pre-season was inspiring great feedback from players about what they wanted and how they felt about the club. Terrific numbers for preseason training and trials. I think we all realize how crucial it is to have a clear and visible plan up front to manage the numbers we ended up with to avoid the issues of last minute disappointments. Numbers going into next year need more thought and consensus on the decisions if we plan to retain junior talented players. We need to continue to provide pathways for all of our juniors as well as create opportunities to further extend and challenge the higher skilled players. Coaches need a selection/interview process to make sure that our club philosophies will be endorsed and carried out in good spirit and that all players and parents are aware of what this means. An early to mid-season formal review is a must to ensure that all coaches are on track and have all the support they need. I was really amazed at how quickly most of the coaches adopted the drills and strategies I really couldn t have hoped for more on that front. It is crucial that there is enough equipment for the number of netballers throughout the seaon more good quality balls needed enough for one between two people. Mainly across the juniors, for clarity, we need to define what the goals are for the coaches to achieve and have it visible to all what are we teaching these kids and why? I think I was guilty of information overload, particularly in the first half of the season too much too fast! I d like to break the season up into phases and have a focus for each one this would need a collective approach with input from all coaches more systematic and less reactive. I think there needs to be more emphasis on improving the basics across all of the juniors which can be addressed with the above focus. In a nutshell, I m really happy with the improvement of basics across the senior teams - I can safely walk behind a line of girls passing long and hard and not get hit in comparison to the start of the season; it has improved out of sight. It s also encouraging that some of the juniors are participating in the senior training more group training in juniors needs to be encouraged - having senior players act as mentors has been hugely successful and appreciated this could be further fostered it s the best way to fast track some of the development. Full credit to the committee members who undertake the organizing of the club excellent job, I really appreciate the work that you all do, with a smile and terrific attitude through the challenging moments. I am keen to be reconsidered for next year as I wasn t able to get all of my plans off the ground and I d really like to be able to follow through with the concepts which were introduced and share all of the netball knowledge that I can. 30 B Grade Coach s Report 2013 saw a new look B Grade at Dookie with a blend of experience and youthful enthusiasm. Fiona Doig took on the captaincy role, ably assisted by Kayla Sutherland. There were a number of players new to the club who settled into the team in no time at all. Although we had mixed success on the court, trainings were always tackled with commitment and enthusiasm with everyone keen to develop their skills and fitness. Jodie Fleming was a very worthy winner of B&F; week after week putting her skills and experience to work whilst at the same time mentoring and encouraging the team. Kayla was runner up B&F finishing the season off strongly. Kate Biesiekierski was voted best team player whilst Kellie Smith took out the Coaches Award for her positive attitude and contribution to the team. Heather Hall 2013 B Grade Coach C Grade Coach s Report The first 3 rounds of the season saw us versing the top 3 sides and it became apparent from the start that having to play these 3 teams 3 times each through the season definitely put us at a disadvantage. It meant that the other 9 matches to play needed to be winners if we were to have any chance at making finals. We were able to match it with most of the remaining teams but still couldn t manage enough wins to sneak a peek in the top five. Our 10 player line up at the start of the season still saw us relying on assistance from other teams due to injury or holidays and the continual rotation of players never allowed us to find our momentum until the later part of the season where we finally managed to play some quality netball and started to settle as a team. Carina Walsh B&F and Courtney Lewis R/Up were deserving recipients of the main awards as they both played strong defensive games consistently all season and combined well together in the circle. Carina s strong drives through the centre court allowed the ball to be delivered down to our Goals and Courtney was always reliable to pull in a few amazing intercepts. Cara Myers took home the most Consistent award for her never give up approach and ability to run everything down. Kath D Elia won the Team Player award due to her ever vibrant on and off court enthusiasm for us to do well and her reliable game through the centre delivering the messages to both ends. The other team members were Gretta O Sullivan and Laura Thomson in goals, although both these players started the season slowly, their accuracy and confidence grew stronger as the season went on they both have their own styles and are lovely to watch. Kate Poppa was always very athletic through the centre court and added pizzazz to the game. Gemma Maffei and Lauren Nisbet (who unfortunately had to relocate due to work) always added a gutsy and determined effort through the defence rotation and through the midcourt as did Jo Kitto, who unfortunately didn t end up being able to play many games for the season. A 6 th place finish on the ladder was quite respectable but we now know that to improve on that we need to be all fully committed to work harder at training and settle much earlier in the season. We have picked up many new things to work on through the guidance of Tanya so just need to improve on these skills now and advance to the next level. All in all a good fun year with plenty of laughs and a great bunch of girls thank you to all players and hopefully everyone will be back again in Jacinta Harrington 2013 C Grade Coach 29 P a g e

31 C Reserve Coach s Report C Reserve had a fantastic year. We started the year with hopes of a finals birth but had no idea that the year would be so successful. The team consisted of 11 players who were all very willing to play and keen to learn. We implemented a rotation policy to enable as many people as possible to play in the team. The team captain was Elise King who confidently let the team all year. C Reserve had a very competitive year and finished 4 th on the ladder, a long way behind the three top teams of the year. We played in the elimination final at Dookie and were very relieved to win comfortably as we were well ahead of Rennie in 5 th place. Our next big test was at Katandra against Waaia who we had not beaten throughout the year. Despite a slow start which saw Waaia jump ahead by 9 goals, we regrouped and came home strong to win in a nail biter by 2 goals. Our elimination final against Katandra again saw us face a team we hadn t beaten all year. We again gave them a head start but came home strong matching them goal for goal in the last quarter. Unfortunately we were not quiet able to get on top of them after playing catch up netball all game and went down by a mere 2 goals. I would like to congratulate the girls on the effort and commitment they put in this year and particularly on the sportsman like way they played their netball. I was very proud to coach the team who kept their heads up all year and thoroughly deserved to make finals. I know it was a huge highlight of some of their netball days at Dookie United. Best of luck to next years C Reserve team! Robyn Gall 2012 C Reserve Coach 30 P a g e

32 17 & Under Coach s Report The 2013 season for the 17 & under netballers has been outstanding to say the least. All nine players have shown amazing improvement and have worked exceptionally hard, having more than earnt their spot in this year s Grand Final. Most players not only trained twice a week, taking full advantage of head coach, Tanya Caruana s coaching expertise, but they have also undertaken senior training directly after their own training session each week. All players were exceptionally motivated from pre-season, right through to the last training session leading into the Grand Final. They worked tirelessly to be fit, work together as a team and to improve their individual skills and most importantly they had fun along the way. Parental support has been terrific alongside some great mentoring from some of the senior netballers. I would particularly like to thank Lynne Harmer for taking on the task of Team Manager and being such a solid support and help to me throughout the entire season. Lynne took copious amounts of statistics for me each and every week, which proved to be an invaluable coaching tool for me to work out where I could improve each player and the team as a whole. I would also like to thank the committee, all senior and junior netball and football coaches and players of both codes who gave so much support to the 17 & Under side, not only during their finals campaign, but throughout the year. I was truly blessed with a team of talented players who soaked up any knowledge they could and who wanted to learn as much as possible so they could be the best they could possibly be. The respect they displayed for me, for each other, for the opposition and themselves is a true credit to each and every one of them and the Club should be as proud of them as I was to have had the privilege of coaching them each week. It has been a joy to coach this team and it has been a very rewarding experience to go on such a special journey with my nine gorgeous ladies. Only two players move into the senior ranks next year, which augurs well for another great year for this age group. Although we were unable to bring the premiership flag home for the Club; there was no real disappointment as the girls played the best netball they could and conducted themselves beautifully, displaying true sportsmanship and great courage. Jodie Fleming & Under Coach 31 P a g e

33 15 & Under Coach s Report In 2013 the 15 & under team consisted of 9 players, including a mixture of girls from the team in 2012, girls from the 2012, 13 & under team and also new players to the club. After an initial get to know you period for our new combination, the girls were eager to learn and of course have as much fun as possible even when burpees, push-ups and sprints were on the menu! We also established early on in the season that the girls would try out as many new positions on the court as possible. With this and skill development in mind, we focused on the quality of our netball rather than the score at the end of the game. This provided the girls with a safe environment to experiment with skills and also attacking and defensive systems learnt at training. Unfortunately we didn t come close to making finals this season, but there were many more successes for us to celebrate such as the improvements gained in basic skills, fitness, team work and the ability to play a number of positions. Each member of the team would have played anywhere between 3 and the full 7 positions available before the finals came around. We must thank our co-captains for this season, in Bec Sinclair and Julia Tallis who were voted in by both the players and me. They each offered a different set of leadership qualities for our team - Bec's netball experience and the way she was able to role model an exceptional level of fitness for the duration of the season were indeed strengths with Julia bringing much positive talk on game day and a unique ability to apply the skills learnt at training into every match - we definitely felt lucky to have such fantastic and well respected captains. Finally, I wish to thank the girls for their efforts and also congratulate them on the way they conducted themselves on and off the court this year. They were a pleasure to coach and I thank them for all the laughs and netball we shared. I would also like to thank the girls family's for their support, the 13 & under girls who filled in when we were short of numbers on a Saturday and Tanya Caruana, Jodie Fleming and Kath D'Elia for their assistance at training and on a Saturday. All the best for a successful season 2014! Serrin Gardner & Under Coach 11 & Under Coaches Report The 11 & under team had a great mix of experience with some of the girls trying netball for the first time and with others reaching a milestone of 50 games! It didn't matter where they started, all the girls improved out of sight by the end of the season. The main emphasis of training was the basics of catching and delivering the ball, as well as having some fun. However, when it came to Saturdays the girls were keen to try every position on the court and naturally learnt about the different roles they needed to take on. Whatever the girls lacked in experience they made up for with enthusiasm and their team cheer of "Go Dooks!" at the start of every quarter was truly inspiring.
