5 LAST TIME OUT VERSUS SAN JOSE The New York Red Bulls fell to the San Jose Earthquakes, 2-0 on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at Avaya Stadium. Fatai Alashe and Chris Wondolowski each scored for the home side. Luis Robles tied an MLS record on the night, starting and playing a full 90 minutes for the 112th consecutive league match, tying Kevin Hartman s record. Robles has not missed a regular season game since his first start at the end of the 2012 season. Homegrown Player Tyler Adams made his MLS debut in the match. The 17-year-old Wappingers Falls, N.Y., native joined New York at the start of the season after playing with New York Red Bulls II last season. Adams started in the midfield alongside fellow Homegrown Player Sean Davis, and former England international Shaun Wright-Phillips, as Jesse Marsch rested several regular starters. San Jose struck first in the 40th minute. With possession around the top of the penalty area, Matias Perez Garcia laid off for Alashe, who took a shot from the top of the half-circle. The ball deflected on its way towards Robles, leaving the Red Bulls goalkeeper no chance. Chris Wondolowski doubled the lead in the 55th minute, finishing a header at close range after a long cross from Shea Salinas on the left wing. The Red Bulls finished with five shots on target and took 58% of the possession in the match. HARD TO FIND ROAD WINS BETWEEN SJ/RBNY In MLS, road wins are hard to find and it is no different in the all-time series between New York and San Jose. Over the previous 37 matches, these two teams have combined for six road wins when these two match up against one another. San Jose has collected four, while New York has tallied just two. Wednesday s match, however, seems to favor New York with the match at Red Bull Arena. The Red Bulls are at home and have outscored the Earthquakes, The last time a road team has stolen three points was on May 7, 2005 when San Jose defeated New York, 1-0 at Giants Stadium. CLUB CONNECTIONS San Jose head coach Chris Leitch spent four seasons with the MetroStars from , and later rejoined New York, helping the Red Bulls reach the 2008 MLS Cup Final. Another Earthquakes assistant, Steve Ralston, overlapped one season with Red Bulls goalkeeper coach Preston Burpo in New England. Ralston is a veteran of 15 MLS seasons between Tampa Bay and New England. Earthquakes defender Victor Bernardez and Sacha Kljestan briefly played together at RSC Anderlecht in Belgium. Kljestan joined the squad in July of 2010 from Chivas USA, while Bernardez spent time out on loan in 2010 before leaving the club on free transfer in July The two did make appearances together, including time in UEFA Champions League qualifying. San Jose defender Marvell Wynne was drafted first overall in the 2006 MLS SuperDraft by New York, just picks before Sacha Kljestan (5th overall). NEW YORK RED BULLS vs. SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES HOMEGROWN GAME MLS Homegrown Team head coach Brian McBride and assistant coach Mike Magee have named their 18-man roster for the 2017 MLS Homegrown Game presented by Energizer. The roster features some of the league s most accomplished young stars who will take on the Chivas de Guadalajara Under-20 Team in the fourth annual MLS Homegrown Game presented by Energizer on Tuesday, August 1 at 7 p.m. CT at Toyota Park. New York s Tyler Adams, Derrick Etienne Jr. and Evan Louro will play for the squad. Adams is one of five players on the roster who played for the United States at the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup earlier this year. SUPER SUB After a slow beginning to the season, Gonzalo Veron seems to have found a knack for late-game theatrics. In the last three MLS matches, Veron has produced four points on one goal and two assists, all four points coming in last five minutes of each match. Against Philadelphia, Veron, who entered the match in the 84th minute, tallied an assist on both of New York s goals (87 & 90+2 ). The Argentine striker then produced the game-winning goal against New England in the 90th minute. Veron came on for Bradley Wright-Phillips in the 83rd minute. Both his assist against Philadelphia and his goal against New England were his first career game-winning assist and goal. MARSCH MOVES TO TOP SPOT The win over New England was the 42nd of Jesse Marsch s New York career. Marsch moved past previous franchise leaders Hans Backe (41) and Octavio Zambrano (41) for the most career regular-season wins with the Red Bulls. New York Coaches - Career Wins Coach Wins 1. Jesse Marsch Hans Backe Octavio Zambrano Bob Bradley Mike Petke 30 Marsch tallied his 50th career win as a head coach in MLS against Columbus on April 22 at Red Bull Arena. MID-WEEK MATCHUPS New York has had its best fortunate at home in midweek games under head coach Jesse Marsch, owning a mark with three clean sheets. The Red Bulls had its first of four mid-week matchups against Sporting Kansas City, falling 2-0 on Wednesday, May 3. The Red Bullshave struggled on the road in mid-week matches under Marsch, tallying an mark. New York earned their first mid-week road win under Marsch against New England, 3-2 at Gillette Stadium. Despite the road woes in the mid-week, New York has only been held without a goal in two of previous eight games. 6 Bradley Wright-Phillips scored twice in the final five minutes to lead New York past Philadelphia on Sunday, June 18. Wright-Phillips recorded his first and the team s first brace of 2017 to give the Red Bulls their first road win of the season. In 124 matches, the Red Bulls striker has tallied 17 braces in his career. Besides Wright-Phillips, three other New York Red Bulls players have recorded at least one brace in their MLS career, Mike Grella (2), Sacha Kljestan (2) and Felipe (1). MAY I ASSIST YOU? The New York Red Bulls earned a 2-0 road shutout against Philadelphia on June 18. During the match, New York recorded four assists on their two goals. All four assists during the Philadelphia contest came from a Red Bulls player that came off the bench. Gonzalo Veron recorded a career-best two assists in the match, the first being a game-winning assist that was the first of his career. Both Sal Zizzo and Kemar Lawrence also tallied an assist. Lawrence s assist was his third game-winning assist of the season. It was the sixth and seventh time this season that New York recorded a double assist on a goal. ROYER RELISHING IN MLS The big signing of Summer 2016, Danny Royer, has relished his chance as a Red Bull starter this season, producing five goals and one assist in 16 games started. Royer got the Red Bulls going in week 1, scoring off of a header from seven yards out to tie the match in Atlanta in the 76th minute. The Austrian native then tallied back-to-back points, recording an insurance goal against Columbus and followed up with his first assist of 2017 against Chicago. Royer has scored in three of the last seven games, two of which have come at the 74th minute or later. Two of Royer s five goals this season have been late-match heroics as his goal in the 76th minute against Atlanta evened the match and his goal against New England in the 74th minute was the game winner. Royer added to his late-match heroics in the Open Cup, as he tallied the game-winning goal in the 67th minute to knock NYCFC out of the tournament and advance to the Round of 16. Royer continued his perfect streak of penalty kicks as he cashed in his second against New England in the 55th minute to level the match, 2-2. Royer, who joined New York on a transfer from FC Midtjylland, had one goal and one assist in six appearances last season. GOLD CUP: PLAYER UPDATES Three members of the New York Red Bulls organization are currently on 40-man rosters in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Michael Amir Murillo is playing for the Panama squad, while Kemar Lawrence and NYRB II s Junior Flemmings are on the Jamaican roster. Lawrence, a left back, has started and played 90 minutes in all three matches for Jamaica, including an assist versus Curacao. He has made 37 appearances for the Reggae Boyz since For the Red Bulls, he has NEW YORK RED BULLS vs. SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES played 13 games in 2017, with a goal and three assists. Murillo, 21, has started and played all 90 minutes in the last three matches, including a goal against Martinque. He has made 12 appearances for Panama at the senior level, earning his first cap in The defender joined New York at the beginning of 2017 on loan from San Francisco FC in Panama. Flemmings, now in his third season with NYRB II, has appeared at multiple youth levels for Jamaica, but has yet to earn a cap with the senior team. The Kingston native has four goals in 11 appearances for NYRB II this season. TIMELY LAWRENCE Each time Kemar Lawrence has recorded an offensive stat (goals/assists), he has made sure that it will affect the outcome of a game. On April 29, Lawrence tallied his first career game-winning goal in the 71st minute to extend New York s winning streak to three with a 2-1 victory over Chicago. Lawrence then assisted on Daniel Royer s game-winning goal in the 74th minute against New England for his second game-winning assist of Five Lawrence s six points this season have been game-winning plays with his first being the game-winning assist against Columbus last week. Of Lawrence s 13 career points, nine have been game-winning plays. He has tallied seven game-winning assists and one game-winning goal. CLOSING OUT MATCHES New York s unfortunate narrative in 2016 was that the team was unable to hold onto a lead or allow the opposition to take points away. Early on in 2017, the Red Bulls have seemed to have changed that narrative. New York is when leading or tied at the 75th minute mark. (9 MLS / 3 Open Cup) New York is 6-1 in one-goal matches, including 4-0 at Red Bull Arena. FIRST BLOOD New York is when scoring first this season. The Red Bulls were when scoring first in 2016, including an mark when scoring first at home. During New York s first three-match homestand this season, it did not trail one minute of the 270 total minutes of play. INTEGRATING HOMEGROWNS Through 18 matches in the 2017 campaign, the New York Red Bulls have been able to integrate their homegrown players, not just with playing time, but as starters. Five of the seven homegrown players have been given the nod to at least start one game this season. Midfielder Sean Davis started the first three games of the season before coming off the bench against Real Salt Lake. Versus Real Salt Lake, three of the 11 Red Bull starters were homegrown players as Tyler Adams, Connor Lade and Alex Muyl found themselves in the Starting XI. For the second game in a row, New York implemented three homegrowns in the starting lineup, featuring Derrick Etienne Jr., Adams and Lade against Houston. The player growth and the trust in the coaching staff have shown in minutes played from last season to this season. For the first time in franchise history, five Homegrown players made an appearance in the same match. Muyl, Adams and Lade started for the Red Bulls and both Davis and Etienne came off the bench. On May 3 against Sporting Kansas City, New York had another first in club history, recording four Homegrowns in the Starting XI, which included Davis, Etienne Jr., Lade and Muyl. The seven homegrown players combined for just 1,807 minutes through 18 games last season. In 2017, the same seven players have racked up 3,332 minutes. The 3,332 minutes are the most minutes for homegrown players on a single club in the MLS in On April 28, New York signed NYRB II goalkeeper Evan Louro to a MLS contract as a Homegrown. Louro became the eighth Homegrown to reach the first team in New York is tied for second with the LA Galaxy with eight Homegrown players on their first team roster. FC Dallas leads the league with nine. CONSISTENTLY GOOD The Red Bulls qualified for the postseason for the seventh-consecutive year in 2016, the longest stretch among major sports teams in the New York metro area. New York finished as the top seed in the Eastern Conference for the third time in four years with 57 points. New York achieved a 50-plus point season for the fifth straight year, a mark only three other MLS clubs have achieved. The LA Galaxy have the only other longest streak, with seven straight 50+ point campaigns. Since 2014, New York has accrued the second most points in the league (193), sitting just 12 points back of FC Dallas for the most. Points from 2014-Present FC Dallas NYRB Seattle LA Galaxy Total HOME-SWEET-HOME New York has already taken care of business in their two three-match homestands. The Red Bulls began with back-to-back 2-0 wins against D.C. United and Columbus and capped it off with a 2-1 victory over Chicago in their first three-game homestand. New York wrapped up their second three-match homestand with four points, defeating New England, 2-1 and tallying a 1-1 draw with Toronto FC. The Red Bulls have gained points in bunches when they are home for three games while head coach Jesse Marsch has been at the helm. New York has been at home for three-straight matches five times under Marsch and have earned at least four points in each homestand. In 2017, New York collected all nine potential points during its first three-match homestand. It was the second time under Marsch that the Red Bulls accomplished the feat.
